Looking for my lost shaker of salt... :cool:

Not exactly a Parrothead, but need some input before I hit the liquor store tomorrow.

Making Margaritas - on the rocks - not frozen!

Should I buy Triple Sec or Grand Marnier?

This a question that I ask myself often. :) I stick to Grand Marnier. Although it's more expensive, I prefer the flavour. Plus I also use it to make Blueberry Tea when I have a cold or can't sleep. Mmmmmmm.

I vote triple sec or Cointreau. Although, I'd skip both.

My perfect margarita is just good tequila, juice of a lime and agave nectar. I'm not much of a fanatic about measurements in my mixology, preferring to taste as I go; I think my ratio is about 1.5 to 1 to 1 plus ice.

Ok, I know I'm late to the party (ha ha :ciappa:), but I had to add my 2 shot gla- err, cents.
Ok, so this is weird. I read your post, had a hankering for some Grand Marnier (heat the glass with boiling water, pour out the water, add a dollop of GM, sniff *ahhhh*, sip 'n' savor, but that's another drink for another night. Or IS it?!?), but that's as far as that went. Opened the newspaper from November the 10th to the Food section, and staring me in the puss was this article (http://www.sfgate.com/default/article/Trip-down-memory-lane-leads-to-a-winning-cocktail-4968835.php) from Gary Regan, aka The Cocktailian. Cool story, if you have a few minutes to read it. I know it deviates a little from what you asked for, but, hey, it's an award-winning margarita. Sometimes in life, you have to make concessions. :) And why won't this stupid site allow me to make paragraphs???
Mary's Margarita
Makes one drink (I don't know you very well, but I will assume you'll want more than one, measure accordingly)
1 thin slice fresh ginger
1 3/4 oz white Tequila
1 1/2 oz triple sec
1/2 oz Campari
1 oz fresh lime juice
Instructions: Muddle the ginger with a little water. Add ice & the remaining ingredients. Shake well, and fine-strain into a chilled margarita glass. Drink to excess.

Thanks all for the input.

MC - I forgot about Cointreau! Next time I'll have to do a price compare with Triple Sec and Grand Marnier.

And FA, that Blueberry Tea reminds me of when I was 18 and on a date at The Keg, and my date ordered one for me. I remember thinking it was delicious, but couldn't taste any blueberries! lol

And that leads me to the next time I tried GM, warmed in a brandy snifter like Finchy describes. The quintessential drink of the '70's bachelor! I remember being told to put my nose in the glass and sniff before drinking, which brought on a decidedly unsexy coughing fit!

That Margarita recipes sounds really good and different from any other I've seen. Thanks!

NoddinOff - you might want to try Skinny Girl Margarita if you don't like any sweetness. I personally found it unpalatable without adding some limeade. But I do appreciate good tequila straight! Can no tolerate clear tequila since then.

I ended up with a really nice Jose Cuervo Gold - Grand Marnier blend. Delicious right out of the bottle with just a squeeze of fresh lime! Or if you run out of lime - still completely drinkable.

Now I just need to avoid posting under the influence on Saturday night. :wink5:

I often chuckle when I hear people order 'Grey Goose and Tonic'. Once you mix vodka with tonic water, you can't tell the difference, and I would challenge nearly anyone to that. Same with Triple Sec versus G.M. or Cointreau. You may be able to tell a slight difference, but I can't see it being worth the price. And, yes, I have made plenty of Margaritas on the rocks with Triple Sec and never got any complaints.

Well well well, here I am a newby stumbling around a new music bored I found and first things I see are Margarita recipes. Since last night was Megamargarita night at mi casa and is fresh in my mind, here goes nothing

A decent tequila, plzzz, no Jose anything. A nice 100% Blue Agave Reposado would suffice

The OP asked, Triple Sec or Grand Marnier? OK, here's the deal, you want a really really good one to impress your newest Ex to be (or yer regular main squeeze)? Go with Cointreau (favorite) or Grand Marnier.

However, very good orange liqueueuers (sp?) abound that don't cost nearly as much

Hiram Walker Triple Sec. Best of the basic Triple Secs and dirt cheap and good.
Licor 43, has a hint of vanilla in it (don't laugh til you try it, then laugh if you must)
O3 Orange Liqueueure (made by Juan De Kuyper, definitely NOT their bottom of the barrel Triple Sec, which must be avoided at all costs)
Patron Citronage. Not worth the price but still a very good one. My kids give me a bottle ever Christmas, whaddaya do?
Gran Gala. A Grand Marnier clone. One's The New Pornograpers, the other's Neko Case
If you end up lost in Texas, don't leave without a bottle of Paula's Orange Liqueuere

More ingredients

Assuming the OP isn't living in a Texas or New Mexico igloo and has no access to Mateos' mixer, let's work with these finishing ingredients,

Blue Agave Nektar.
Medium lime
Medium lemon
_______________________the recipe________________________
1 shot tequila
1/2 shot Orange Liqeueuure. I split evenly (relative term, actual split depends on how drunk I am) between Licor 43 and O3 (or Grand Gala)
Tablespoon, more or less, (to taste) of Agave Nektar
1/2 lime
1/2 lemon (danged New Mexicans changed my mind about lemon in margaritas)
Shake in a shaker loaded with ice til you can't shake any more then a wee bit after that.

Pour in a 10 oz. tumbler, rim salted or no. Adjust the next one according to yer own taste. You'll find as the evening wears on you can take more and more liberties with the recipe.

Enjoy. Now, off to find a music thread with a group I've actually heard of!!
