You probably know Pixelthis and his infamous "Plasma is dead" thread which was a riot. But time might have proven him right :)
With new TV technology OLED HDTVs hitting the stores and price dropping as production increases, Plasma TVs indeed might be nearing the end. OLED offer all the advantages of Plasma (contrast, color, viewing angle, judder) and non of disadvantges (bulky, power consumption, dimness).

Tubes and vinyl are dead also, as per Pix.

It will be a while before plasma is dead. The price of OLED's and 4K sets are high and it will be a while before they come down in price to compete with the middle of the road Panasonic ST series plasma's, or the best LED TV's. For the average Joe, even $1k for a TV is a lot of money.
By the way, then new Samsung 8500 series plasma's are bright enough to use in bright rooms. Their pictures are fabulous, on par with the Panny VT and ZT series but they have brighter pictures. And after a couple of years the top of the line SS and Panny Plasma's will come way down in price.

4K TV prices already dropping big time as Chinese (such as Seiki) getting involve in manufacturing them. And I am guessing it will also happen with OLED TVs if they get involve.

Have you seen a Music Direct catalog?
Have you frequented any other sites where what we talk about is pocket change?
Far from dead, just a bit misunderstood by many :)

Pix was an absolute genius, man! An absolute genius! You all probably just couldn't comprehend his superior dialog. OH, Pix where art thou...... This site has gone down hill without him, the final nail in the coffen.

Pixelless hasn't been right since he was born. Here is the bottom line Smoke. The early adopting folks are performance driven, not price driven. If there is actually a performance benefit, then the early adopters will buy it regardless of price. We have already seen early testing of the Seiki 4K set. When compared to a 720p plasma panel, the Seiki had poor black levels, poor and inaccurate grey scale levels at the bottom of its range, and from 9ft away, the 4K resolution was no more apparent than the 720p resolution of the Panasonic 720p panel. The Panasonic beat the Seiki in contrast, black levels, and accurate color levels of REC. 709.
I fear that 4K on any panel size smaller than 65" inches as viewed from 9ft away will offer no more perceptive resolution to the eye than a 1080p set of similar size. 4K projectors are a completely different animal altogether.
