I recently purchased a Yamaha RX-V1400 because of the strong recommendations on this message board. I started to look at the new RX-V750 when it came out and I can't seem to figure out the difference between that and what I bought besides 10 watts X 7. Did I pay $150 more for just 10 watts? :(

Not exactly, the YPAO of the RX-V1400 apparently does more than the YPAO of they 750. Also, the THX features on the 1400 are very nice to have as well as the added connections. And the power is a bit more than 10 watts, lots of reserve juice in the RX-V1400.
All in all I think they're probably both equal values, you got your money's worth. Enjoy :)

did you check if the v750 has an assignable front effect and 2 zone, cause the rx-v1400 has.

750 has the presence/zone 2 as well...I believe the 650 also has those.

I've seen the $750 for as low as $405 I and usually around $499 or so. I really don't think you are compromising taking the rx-v750 or rx-v650.
My neighbour just got the Rx-v650 from J&R in NY. It's a pretty hard little worker, and makes my RX-V795a I got 4 years ago sound like it's broken.

well if there won't be any trade off on sound, then the rx-v750 would be a better deal in my oppinion (YAPAO and THX is no big deal).

Simple, they are not in the same league.
From my best knowledge, the 1400 is 1 step above the 750. Regardless of the features and 10Watts difference, the 1400 is in the mid level of the yamaha line of receivers (together with the 2400). The 1400 has better built quality overall including better amps(this make the big difference), transformer...
And to me, it's worth the $200 extra.
(the 750 is the same level with the 650, 550... regardless of fetures)

The difference in power supplies/transformers etc, is quite nominal at best between these receivers. Yes, the 1400 is the lowest of Yamaha's mid-level line, but the amplifation in those mid-level units is hardly spectacular, certainly not worth an extra $200. Yamaha's really improved the amplification in their entry-level receivers in the last few years. There's no QUALITY difference, just size. In fact most of the parts are the same. Within the receiver's amplification capacity there's effectively 0% performance difference. A fancier, thicker, and heavier housing is a great and effective marketing tool to differentiate product lines, but in real world performance doesn't amount to much.

Unless you really crank your receiver to the max in a movie, your decision to drop the extra $200 should definitely NOT be because of the improved amplification or power that the RX-V1400 has. It should instead be based on the extra features, like built in Parametric equalization, THX toys, more connections, better remote, etc. If amplification is your main concern, you'd be way further ahead to invest the extra $200 into a separate amplifier instead of the nominally larger built in amp in the 1400.

I got the RX-V1400 for the parametric equalization basically, a much more significant improvement than an extra few watts. My neighbor just got his HTR-5760 (same as RX-V650) and it sounds every bit as nice as my 1400. My 8 year old 60 watt per channel Adcom amplifier is better than my 110 watt/channel RX-V1400 in stereo any day.

All that being said, the RX-V1400 is superior BECAUSE of its features, not amplification, and if you can afford it and would use those features, then it's probably the right choice for you. I just got mine on Wednesday, and I'm amazed with it.

I upgraded from a Yamaha 795a to the 1400 a couple of months ago. I really do not see that much differance in the two other than music sounds better with the 7 channel stereo. I still only use the standard prologic mode when watching movies and regular TV. I have tried the other modes but they do not sound as good. I kind of regret doing the upgrade now. Was $750 I could of used somewhere else. Should of listened to the salesman at the stereo store. If I listened to more music it would of been worth it but I primary just use it for video.
