In a sermon on Tuesday morning, Pope Francis said the eye brow-raising remark that even atheist can go to heaven if they do good.

He said "The Lord has redeemed all of us, not just Catholics, with the Blood of Christ: all of us, including the atheist.”

If you read between the lines, what he actually is saying that humans don't need organized religion to reach salvation. As long as you do good and be kind to fellow human being, you will go to heaven. And that is a big revalation coming from head of Catholic church.

Pope Francis says atheists who do good are redeemed, not just Catholics ? The Punch - Nigeria's Most Widely Read Newspaper (http://www.punchng.com/news/pope-francis-says-atheists-who-do-good-are-redeemed-not-just-catholics/)

This is a very radical position theologically. It's also one that be bitterly denounced by many Christians, from conservative Catholics to Evangelical Protestants.

One wonders what "Father of the Church", Saint Augustine of Hippo would have thought of it. Not much I suspect. He was the originator of such charming concepts as Original Sin and Predestination.

Pope Francis I has also said the the Roman Catholic church should be the church of the poor. This is a very good thing but, any way you slice it, it's going to take a long time to effectively help the world's poor. The Pope could do more immediate good by (i) ending the RC Church's opposition to birth control, (ii) ending priestly celibacy, (iii) greatly broadening women's role in the Church, e.g. women priests, (iv) softening the Church's stand abortion, (v) softening its stand against homosexuality.

Yes as a gay former catholic the church needs to minister to gay parishioners. It is okay to be gay as long as we remain celebate. If you have sex you are no longer in a state of grace. If you are not is a state of grace you cannot receive the sacraments.

The previous pope during the childhood abuse scandal wanted to ban all gay priests. Again the presumption that gays molest children. Pedophiles and hebaphiles molest children. All they needed to do was turn the abuser over to the police and leave the gay priests alone

The church needs to understand that there are many good moral gay people.

I'm guessing it will be denounced because it goes against their teaching that only way to get to heaven is believing in Jesus Christ. Or in another word if you are not christian, you are going to hell.

This way they can use that advantage to justify their collection plate and beat up other religions :)

Untill the church recognize that homosexuality is genetic rather than choice, I don't think there will be any headway in that direction.

Smokey you may not know this but it also speaks to people of the Jewish faith. The reason the mass is not said in Latin anymore is in the Latin Rite there is a prayer for the conversion of the Jews. He is speaking to more than atheists.
