Apple’s iTunes store continues to dominate the music download business as it approaches its 10th anniversary on April 28.

Eight out of 10 digital music buyers downloaded tracks and albums from iTunes in Q4 2012, capturing 63% of the download market share in 2012, followed by Amazon at 22%, according to new data from The NPD Group.

Meanwhile, 44 million Americans bought at least one song track or album download in 2012. That number has remained relatively stable throughout the past three years, despite the rapid growth of Pandora and other music-streaming options.

NPD estimated that average per-buyer spending on music downloads increased 6% year-over-year, due largely to increases in music purchasing by teens, along with an increase in the number of consumers purchasing both single song tracks and full albums.

This is exactly what I have been saying for a couple of years now.

Downloads are not gaining more customers, the same amount of consumers are just buying more downloads. Apple appears to be losing market share to the other download sites, even though it still has the largest market share overall. It had a 69% market share in 2009, a 70% share in 2010, and now a 63% share in 2012. Amazon was at 12% in 2010, and now is 22% in 2012.

Well, now it is official :D

Maybe another reason the number of customers has been stable for last few years is that any potential growth is chipped away by illegal downloads, or shared.

They have done study after study that proves file sharing is not taking away from sales, but actually encouraging more sales. The RIAA does not want you to know this, because it would take away the justification of going after folks who download movies and music via file sharing.
