Kevin Ayers of Soft Machine died Monday aged 68.

Kevin Ayers dies aged 68 | Music | guardian.co.uk (http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/feb/20/kevin-ayers-dies-aged-68)

I had a roommate who was really into his solo stuff a couple of years ago and she played it quite a bit, so I got into him then. Sad to hear.

Enjoy this Soft Machine clip from 1967:

and I also can't help but post this earworm + ludicrous video:

Too bad - he had a short but pretty good life it seems. I can't believe how unfamiliar I am with his solo work, esp. with how much I love Soft Machine.

My one and only experience with Soft Machine was hearing them open a four-band bill featuring the headliner, Jimi Hendrix. I wasn't expecting much, so I was blown away by how good they were. Nobody could top Hendrix, but of the three warm-up acts (Soft Machine, Blue Cheer, Electric Flag) they were the best!

Sweet Deceiver is the only album I actually own but it's a great record.
