Take a look at audio engine, M-Audio, Paradigm shift speakers. As far as needing a 3mm connector, if the speakers come with a larger one, there are adapters available at radio shack, partsexpress.com and monoprice.com

Audioengine - Join the computer audio revolution (http://audioengineusa.com/)

M-AUDIO - Reference Monitors (http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.family&ID=studiomonitors)

Computer Speakers at Crutchfield.com (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-UWwPkPMOCcR/g_12800/Computer-Speakers.html)

I second the Audio Engine speakers. they are very good sounding for a computer speaker and seem to be built rather well. They are powered speakers so all you would need to do is hook the laptop to them and enjoy.

I run a pair of Audio Engine 2 with an Audioquest Dragon Fly DAC from my computer with great results. Under $500-.
