In the old testament it says that can a mother provide for her children as much as God has provided for her creatures with varieties of fruit and vegetable. It is amazing what one can grow with little bit of dirt and water.

I like tart fruit so........

LOL! Mine too!

#1 - Royal Gala or Red Delicious apples. But only in the fall when I can get them fresh off the farm.

#2 - Grapes. Red or Green, doesn't matter as long as they're seedless and crisp. No mushy grapes for me.

#3 - Oranges. Again, in the fall when they are their freshest.

#4 - Blueberries, Raspberries, and Blackberries...it's a tie...I love them all.

My favorite fruits are peaches and pears. Right at that perfect state of ripeness.

Mine are Colorado peaches, Honey Crisp and Pink Lady Apples. A good orange or tangerine will do as well.

Pears and peaches seem to be kind of fruit that have to be eaten at exactly right stage of ripness (not too soft or not too hard). Other wise there is simply no flavor.

I don't know about mango though :D

I actually like pears before they are ripe. They have to be crisp. Once they get soft they're too ripe for me.

Most pears I see in the supermarket seem to be under ripe to me. If we buy some, we usually let it sit at room temperature for couple of days to soften it little bit.

When they get too soft, I cook them with onions and carrots, or butternut squash, in some low sodium veggie broth and then puree it to make soup. It's yummy!

Mango is very similar. You don't want it too firm or too soft. Mangoes change color from green to red/yellow/orange as they ripen. Look for the right color and just a little give when you squeeze and it's ready.

Kudos to you for posting a pic of a pomegranate. That's not something you see everyday at an av site.

Never heard of preparing pears like that. This was the first Christmas in years that we didn't get a box of pears from my uncle (he's quite old and widowed so I'm just glad he's still with us - he let us know ahead of time that he was slowing down some this year). We would share the pears with the rest of the family because we couldn't eat them all before they went bad. We should have experimented more.

I have to agree. A nice ripe mango is excellent. They are so messy to eat though. I also like a nice ripe fresh pineapple. If i didnt like meat or poultry cooked on my grill so much, I could live off of fresh fruit!

I do a seasoned chicken breast on the grill topped off with honey mustard and apple slices. Pineapple on the grill is really good too.

We're getting a bit off-topic, but here's my recipe for Pear Carrot Soup. You can substitute butternut squash for the carrots.

ForeverAutumn's Carrot/Pear soup

1 Tbsp olive oil
1 onion chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
10 large carrots, peeled and sliced (use fewer carrots if you want a thinner soup)
1 large ripe pear
1 litre low-sodium vegetable broth
1 tsp curry
1/2 tsp cumin
1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
1/4 tsp cinnamon
a pinch of sea salt.

saute the onion and garlic in the olive oil until the onion is almost soft.

add the carrots and a pinch of salt and saute for a few more minutes to release some of the juice in the carrots.

add 1 litre of vegetable broth and the spices. Simmer on medium/low heat until carrots just start to soften.

chop the pear into large pieces (you're going to puree the soup so you may want to peel the pear first. I don't bother as I have a Vitamix that will puree anything).

continue to simmer soup until the pears are cooked, about 10 to 15 minutes.

when the carrots and pears are cooked, puree the soup in a blender or with a hand blender.

if the soup is too thick add some water or additional broth to get the consistency that you like. If you add more water you may end up needing to add more spices and simmer it a bit longer to blend the flavours.

I am really weird when it comes to fruit. I love orange juice, but not oranges. I love apple juice, but not apples. I love cranberry juice and pomegranate juice, but not cranberry's or pomegranates. Watermelon, grapes, cantaloupe all sit at the top of my list. Bananas follow after that.

Kudos to you for posting a pic of a pomegranate. That's not something you see everyday at an av site.Maybe that help popularity of the fruit as at the supermarket some cashier at check out look at fruit and wonder what they are

They say the fruit fiber also contain alot of nutritious value that is missing in juice form. A brand name called Naked Juice is probably as close as you are going to get to real fruit, but they are like $3 for 15 oz juice bottle.

One thing I did over the holiday season, made possible by having a commercial grade oven in the kitchen was to make, essentially, a dessert pizza... a thin crust dough with a garlic oil brush, whipped ricotta, basil chiffonade, peaches and pears, gorgonzola, candied walnuts and a caramel syrup...

I once bought a pint of kumquats just to try them. They are a bit of a novelty here. They're a strange fruit. I didn't mind them, but I'm not running out to buy them again either.

I love to pronounce the 'p' in raspberry

I like apples, love applesauce and adore apple juice. My whole family does - me and my 2 kids drink a gallon a week. Honey crisp apple juice is awesome. One thing I'd miss about Washington state were I to leave is the variety of apples I can get in season. That, and the berries. Sorry California and Brazil, but your fruit is dung compared to Washington state.

Whenever I'm buying apples off-season (December to September) I always look for Washington apples. They use a storage system in Washington that preserves the apples longer and keeps them crisp far past the time when apples from most other places are starting to soften. Washington Red Delicious are the BEST!
