Neil Young plans to launch a hi-res downloads service called Pono alongside a range of portable music players in order to "save the sound of music".

Young's Pono project so far has the backing of Sony Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. Young has appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman to promote Pono that will launch next year. It will be comprised of a music downloads store, a tool that converts digital audio files into analog-sounding recordings, and a series of audio players.

The player will, according to Young, play back Pono master files with "the best sound anyone can get." While you'll have to re-buy songs if you want to hear them in their high-definition glory, the Pono devices will also play back tracks bought from other digital stores.

good luck to him, with this VENTURE!!?

If he go at it alone, it prorbaly will be a bust. I don't think many poeple want to carry a proprietary audio mobile device just listen to music. Their smart phone alreaday does it all-albiet less sound quality.

Young said he was talkin with Apple's Steve Jobs about this project before steve died, so if Apple get involve he probably have better chance of success. And lets hope Sony, Universal and Warner Music Groups who are backing this project delivere from their end in regrad to hi-res music tracks.
