NXNE (North by Northeast) starts next week here in Toronto. I generally don't bother with a wristband as I'm not into the whole hanging out downtown club-hopping thing anymore. But there are usually some good free shows held at Dundas Square, which is a kind of urban concrete park in the centre of the downtown core.
Two years ago we saw Iggy Pop there as part of NXNE, it was his only Canadian show and it was FREE (and insanely, dangerously, crowded). This year there are several pretty good freebies that we may attend but the show that I'm really looking forward to is two bands that I have been dying to see live for a long time...Of Montreal and The Flaming Lips. Unfortunately, there is only 40 minutes slotted for Of Montreal which is not nearly enough time IMO. But it's free so I'll take what I can get.
I just have to cross my fingers for good weather that night as it's an all outdoor venue. I love free shows!
