I am at the point where I am ready to upgrade to a new reciever (replacing my 12-year old Pioneer VSX5700). I have narrowed it down to one of these two Yamaha receivers: the HTR 5630 for $150 or the new HTR-5740 for about $250.
Can anyone shed some light on if there are significant differences betwen the two models. I listen to about 75% music and 25% home theater, Thanks in advance.

There's a better DAC and more power in the 5740, which might make a difference as far as sound quality goes. The DAC might come in handy if you listen to multi channel music. There's several other features you may or may not appreciate. I think the 5740 has at least 1 more digital input which (3 altogether) which is probably a worthy feature to have since you seem to own your equipment for a long time. I'd say both are decent buys, the 5740 has a few more bells and whistles, like more DSP sound programs and some other features I won't go into here. Only you can decide if they're worth $100 to you.
If it was me I'd take the 5740, but I like bells and whistles.

Yeah, I had pretty much made up my mind after thinking about it all weekend. I'm going with the new 5740. You hit the nail on the head: I want to invest in something that's going to be useful over the long term , and for an extra $100 or so, it's worth it. Thanks kexodusc.

Just be careful, you can extra $100 yourself into the poorhouse with this stuff :)
