Sometimes nothing wakes you up better than a good tune in the morning. Better than coffee (I'm not sure if it's better than sex) but it helps. Sometimes a tune can "git your motor running" like nothing else. For me today it was "Mamma's Pearl" minor Jackson 5 hit from 1971.

I really need some waking today... went to see the Black Keys and Arctic Monkeys last night, and I'm getting a little long-in-the-tooth for big city nights.

My morning commute was enlivened by an album track off the first album by The Police, an up-tempo number called "Truth Hits Everyone". I'm still groggy, hung over and deaf... but that helped.

I would love to see the Arctic Monkeys. I love that band!

I'm grooving to some great, but not well known, prog this morning. A band called Shadow Circus, the album is Whispers and Screams. Great music and a great bunch of guys. After the earthquake in Haiti, this band donated three weeks worth of sales to raise money. I bought the CD knowing that my $20 would go to help rebuild the country. It was an added bonus that the music kicks some serious ass. Everytime I listen to this disk I feel good.

Classical Rockers, first song on side 2 of Tommy McCook's most excellent Dubbing with Horns compilation. I often need a bit of a spacey something to let my mind wake up a bit slowly until the coffee takes effect. Just woke up and hit start on the table and this was the last thing I played before bed last night and it was still sitting there waiting for me.

The Tape-beatles - "Grave Implications"

Some strange stuff. They loop samples of beats or parts of songs, and overlay audio from speeches, educational films, and newsreels it appears.

I don't wake up until I am drivin' to work. This morn the first tune to come up was Steve Miller's version of Mercury Blues. :12:

This morning's song was an old fave, "Never Aim to Please" by Bash & Pop... the post-Replacements project of Tommy Stinson. A nice, bouncy pop-rock song with a steady beat... just right for driving on the expressway.

This morning's wake up call was the new The Shins CD, Port of Morrow. It's still growing on me. First impressions are favourable, although it's no Chutes Too Narrow.

This morning it was "England" from The National. Love the way this one builds. By the end, I'm ready.

I need to revisit Chutes Too Narrow. I never have understood the favoritism of this over Oh, Inverted World which I have thought is their best by far.

To each their own. I think that Oh, Inverted World is boring.

EDIT: It looks like we're time-warping again.

Hey FA, wanted to thank you for the Shadow Circus recommendation. It was just delivered by UPS from Amazon and I'm liking it right out of the box. Can't say the some about The Trews, but it's a whole different genre and not my cup of tea.

Hey Jack, glad to hear that you're digging the Shadow Circus disk. John was on Progressive Ears last year talking about the new disk that they were recording, but I don't know what happened. I thought it was going to be released last year. Maybe they were cash strapped. I should try to find out.

The Trews are a completely different animal altogether. They are a killer live band! Just fun crunchy guitar rock and roll. We've seen them several times around town. In fact, I think that this is the first time that we've paid to see them.

First day back at work, I was greeted by Mighty Mighty, by Earth Wind & Fire as I turned on the ignition.

This is the first time in a long time that when the CD was done, I got up, got another glass of wine, came back, put my headphones on this time and hit play again. There was so much to the music, that I wanted to hear it again.
