You know how it is when you get a new record or CD and you listen to it and you find your favorite track that really defines the album for you. Sometimes it's the title track, or the first track. As you listen further and you get to the end and you say, well I guess they threw that last track on to get the recording done. What if that's not the case and the last track is the best. I'm sure you all have a few albums where last is best. I have a couple off the top of my head.

Kansas -- Masque--- "The Pinnacle"

Foghat -- Rock and Roll Outlaws -- "Chateau Lafitte 59 Boogie"

Typically the closer is almost never the best overall song, cause it often serves a different purpose. But sometimes that other purpose does make it the best... one of my favorite closers is the 9 1/2 minute "Blue Line Swinger" from Yo La Tengo's Electr-O-Pura...

Big Star - Third/Sister Lover
'Take Care' is the closer on my lp version of this one (guess the track listing varies on many of the releases - I have the remastered from orig. analogue tapes pressing that came out on Record Store Day last year and it sounds Good!) ...just a lovely, harrowing closer song that rings perfect for such a desolate but beautifull album. I played Yo La Tengo's version as the good-night song at my wedding reception.

Two come to my mind: Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms and The Eagles: The Sad Cafe.

Rock and Roll just don't get much better!

=> GRACIOUS - Gracious - "The Dream"

Cheers,

Beatles -- Sgt. Pepper's -- A Day in the Life

First one that came to mind for me, too.

And speaking of 'classic rock'... how about The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again"?

Allman Bros - Eat a Peach - Mountain Jam

That's the first response that I differ with. Now granted a lot of the other things mentioned I don't know. As far as Eat A Peach, I prefer Les Brers In a Minor.

I don't know Rae, I think I have both Sender and Fortress ahead of AFK.

And how about two more candidates...

XTC - Skylarking
The Velvet Underground - Loaded

And while I'm thinking about Lou...

Coney Island Baby

I'm not saying there isn't more than one good song on the record! But "AFK" comes as such a contrast to the rest of the songs... so massive and anthemic. Protect! Embrace! Engulf!

Agreed, and the tie to the album title, and the playful little nod to Slint at the end make it all the moreso. And speaking of Slint... "Good Morning, Captain" fits that closer role to near perfection too.... I miss yooooouuuuuuuuu....
