Had not seen this movie for a while, so picked up a DVD of this film which was on sale. It star Richard Gere, Debra Winger and Louis Gossett Jr. which he won best supporting actor awards.

This is a new transfer (2007) from Paramount and they did an excellent job with this movie as it sparkle with plenty of details, pops and deep blacks. One of best looking 80's movie on DVD.

The movie startup strong as Richard Gere sign up with navy to become a pilot. And Louis Gossett is introduced as the sarg in charge of this new recruits. His first encounter with new recruits is memorable one (and many times copied) and his comment of "two things come out of Oklahoma..." is so hilarious.

The only cheesey part is romance scenes which director played it safe, especially the last scene (Gere picking up Debra Winger and carry her) which even director thought was over the top. But to Winger's credit, she did an awsome job as the love interest and kept the romance scenes bearable.

Ther is also alot of extra features on this DVD including "25 Years Later" segment where Louis Gossett Jr take us back and go thru each location where filming was shot and tell story behind it.

In the world of DVD reissue, that is new transfer :)

Studios have gotten into bad habit of rebadging DVDs with new cover photo, but using the same old transfer from previous issue DVDs. Good examples are new reissue of Eastwood Dirty Harry and National Lampoon series films. Although DVD have new cover, but the movie is from old transfer.

And other DVD reissues to stay away from are Airplane (Shirley Edition), Harlem Nights and Coming to America.
