Last night I decided to switch out my trusty Yamaha CR-550 for my Yamaha RX-V485 on my 2 channel system. The CR is from 1978 and the 485 I bought new in 1994. First album played was Marillion , Misplaced Childhood and I was floor by what I heard. The bass seemed tighter, highs were great, but the biggest difference was in the midrange, wow is all I can say.

Could Yamaha have put such a better quality Phono preamp in the newer receiver. Nothing esle was changed, but the receiver.

So next album was XTC, oranges and lemons, which has alway been one of favorite for sounds. Again, overwhemed by the sound, everything coming thought tight and clear. Guess I never realized how much a difference in Phone preamps there was.

Guess I'll start looking into upgrading my Yamaha PL-500 turntable, which has been faithfull all these years.

The phono stage can play a very significant role in the sound as a whole. It can vary in quality, gain, input capacitance...stuff that will matter.
