I have seen couple of polls about the best recent western film, and Unforgiven seem to be majority favorite. Good movie, but slightly over drawn.

So started this poll to give node to Tombstone as better westerrn mostly due Kurt Russel performance. Especially like the part where he take away guy"s gun where the guy was talking trash, and whipp it upside his head.

Ranked by release date:

Unforgiven (1992): An aging outlaw and killer who takes on one more job years after he had hung up his guns and turned to farming.

Tombstone (1993):Tell them I'm coming and HELLS coming with me.

Maverick (1994): Western comedy film based on the 1950s television series of the same name.

Wyatt Earp (1994): A semi-biographical Western film.

The Quick and the Dead (1995): The story focuses on "The Lady" (Stone), a gunfighter who rides into the 1878 Wild West town of Redemption, controlled by the ruthless John Herod (Hackman).

Wild Wild West (1999): Similar to the original TV series it was based on, The Wild Wild West, the film features a large amount of gadgetry.

Open Range (2003): The "wars" pitted those that believed in free access to water and grass for everyone, against the land barons, who used the new fencing to block the free-range cattlemen from moving their herds.

3:10 to Yuma (2007): A small-time rancher agrees to hold a captured outlaw who's awaiting a train to go to court in Yuma.

My vote was for 3:10 To Yuma. It's one of those movies that (IMO) reveals more depth on every subsequent viewing.

I guess I'll have to watch it again. :) I voted for Unforgiven but then I've seen it a few times.

True Grit was pretty good and I preferred it to 3:10 To Yuma. Of the rest I've only seen Wild, Wild West and it ain't my kind of movie; (no disrespect to Will Smith -- I loved him in MIB).

I voted for Unforgiven. Of the options, Unforgiven simply nails the genre. No ifs, ands or buts.

However, I'm starting to think that Dead Man (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112817/) (not listed) could give a strong run for best western in the last 20 years. It's a bit weird, but I thought it really captured some of the big themes associated with the "West"-- lawlessness, self reliance, wildness and the tragedy of the displacement of the native Americans, with a depth, sensitivity and emotionality that is rare for Westerns. It really deconstructs the mythology. I was enthralled.

Also, it really focuses on the coastal Western states. Hailing from that part of the country, it's good to see the non-romanticized west.

Plus, you get an amazing score courtesy of Neil Young and some good cameos from Iggy Pop, Billy Bob Thorton and others...

I'll also put in a plug for The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, which should be counted as a Western, but probably isn't.

I also have to go with 3:10 to Yuma. Watched it a second time a month or so ago and enjoyed it as much as the first time.

I also liked the Quick and the Dead, but it was a bit too unbelievable.

I also liked Cold Mountain and Renee Zellweger stole the show. But I guess this one along with Wild Wild West cannot be considered as true Westerns.

The remake of True Grit was OK.

One also not mentioned that I watched last night is Young Guns. Where is Bad Girls on this list, how about Outlaw Josie Whales?

I don't know about Dead Man. That was kind of wierd movie and a bit too long. It might also not fit into traditional westerns that this poll was aiming for as there are other genre of westerns. And the space (olnly 10 choices allowed) might also be a factor for not being listed :)

Other than Bad Girls, the other two go beyound the 20 year mark. Silverado and Lonesome Dove would have been good candidates if they fit the time frame.

I went with Tombstone for the following reasons:

1. Great Ensemble Cast, they all stepped up to the plate. Hell they even gave us a Cameo from the late, great Chuck Heston.

2. Iconic imagery: The walk to the O.K. Corrall was one of the best long shots I've ever seen. And the barn burning in the background? Marvelous!!!

3. It changed the lexicon: "You're a Daisy if you do!" "I'm you're huckleberry"! "I've not yet begun to defile myself!" And a dozen more phrases that stil pop up long after the fom's relegation to late night T.V.

4. It's just a damn good movie.
