Before they became a novelty casino act, ZZ Top put out 4 or 5 good albums and an occasional hit per album to follow.............I like these:

1 -- Shakin' Your Tree

2 -- Waitin'For the Bus / Jesus Just Left Chicago

3 -- Heard it on the X

And just for fun................Honorable mention : Mexican Blackbird

ZZTop like The Police or Rush are only three member band, but it is amazing how much "sound" they put out. Never owned their albums, so these are top 3 from their hits:

Cheap Sunglasses
TV Dinners
Rough Boy

ZZ's an acquired taste for me but I love those cats! First rate musicians and they seem to be down to earth guys.

"Heard it on the X" - Scalding hot and fast as hell!!!

"Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers" - Nasty, nasty stuff!

"Blue Jean Blues" - One of the few blues tunes I can listen to all day.

Honorable Mention:

"Just Got Paid" - Schweet riff!

"La Grange" - A ripp off but oh they ripped it right!!!!

Brown Sugar (1970)

Master Of Sparks (1973)

I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide (1979)

Yeah, just three are tough, but then again, I can count on one hand the number of times I've pulled out a ZZ-Top album to listen to in the last 10 years. Talk about a band that jumped the shark in the '80s - sucked ever since. Damn shame.

I had a good friend that took me to a Fort Worth club one night in early 1971 to see "a new band from Houston" -- the same month or so of the release of the first album from ZZ Top.............the gig was impressive and, for a 3-piece, the band was very solid. I saw them again a couple of times during 1973 and 1975 and they had grown better with many good rock - and - blues - based hits. After the mid-seventies, they changed directions...........probably a profitable change but, not a change that I cared for. Apparently, the witty, comical, farcical (whatever label) facet the band had revealed on a few early tunes was now the priority, and their music and stage presence was forever altered.

I last saw ZZ in 2007 and, even though the musicianship is still very good, the "act" has gone stale.
