Inspired in part by the controversy in the Center Channel Impedence thread and in part in ridiculous and ostentatious $6 Milllion Dolar Home Theater (http://www.geekologie.com/2008/02/6_million_home_theater_makes_m.php) , cost-no-object, what would you do in a spare 40 X 70 room?

Would you use horns because they're traditional? Line arrays? 'stats? In-Walls?...I mean the Wisdom Audio Sage gets great press but you might wanna watch some concert B-Rays...

Three center channels?

Room treatments?

What projector? What screen?

Here's a biggie...what processor? Do you go with the latest-and-the-greatest or a boutique brand that focuses more on one aspect of the audio/video balance?

I'm just curious from the standpoint of what can be done and what folks would be willing to compromise in order to reach their objectives...

Or maybe not...

I'll bit on this one.

Speakers.

I would take the same speakers that are in my signature, add two extra bass modules to the front three mains, and extra midrange module, and one additional tweeter module as well.I would add 8 more surrounds to what I already have, and two more subs to the LFE channel.

Pre-amp.

I would keep the same pre-amp as I already have, since you probably cannot improve on it much even at a higher cost.

Projector and screen.

I would move my Sony 4K projector from my studio to this room, and increase the screen size to 40ft wide. I would buy the Dolby 3D system for 3D projection.

Amps.

I would trade up my current amps to Bryston 28B without quad amping them as I do now. I would get enough Bryston's to cover the entire system, even though that would be an overkill of epic proportions.

Player.

I would keep trade my Oppo to a D-cinema server system. This way I can project everything from 2K to 4K in 3D.

There you go Mark. I don't want to leave you hangin on this one.

I guess my difficulty in responding to this thread stems from the above. Given an unlimited budget...or even a capped budget of $6 mm...I can't even begin to fathom what sort of compromises I'd face. I've always wanted to see the stars, and you've just told me that I'm the Silver Surfer. It seems to me Time would be the only limiting factor in this scenario. Alpha Orionis, aka, Betelgeuse -- the star, not the movie -- is my first stop. You're welcome to come along for the ride.

Rest assured that it wouldn't take millions to build my ideal home theater. Give me a day or so to dream (and research) and I'll reply with specifics.

Anyone know how much it costs to build an IMAX theater in your home?

I would really love to know how all that gear gets driven with no cables.

Perhaps the cable is custom or proprietary.

Must be called "Invisicable"

Dusting in there must also be a nightmare for the maid.

Yeah, I get what you're saying but believe it or not, I suspect that there would be compromises vis-à-vis full onslaught surround and two channel. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like a hard integration.

Hey Terrence,

A couple of follow-up questions:

1) When discussing the "Titan" are you referring to this (http://www.hometheater.com/content/digital-projection-titan-1080p-3d)?

2) Which model of Sony are you sprechen of and how do the Titan and the SONY SRXR320P modules compare?

3) My observation is that a lot of "professional installs" focus equally on aesthetics (read: WAF, appearance, etc.) and that usually leads to inwalls. My own limited experience is that inwalls never have proper imaging in a two channel scenario and, when improperly placed, can have beaming issues. Thoughts?

Hyfi,

I'm assuming that you integrate the VAC via a home theater passthrough? How has that worked in regards to creating both an operational tow-channel and a fullfilling HT experience?

No pass through, just front pre outs from the HT to the VAC, switch to that input and set the volume controls to 1am. switchbox for the sub also.

Works fine for me. My speakers are poorly matched so that is my main downfall but it beats TV speakers for movies.

That is the one. All of the issues detailed in this review have long been worked out.

2) Which model of Sony are you sprechen of and how do the Titan and the SONY SRXR320P modules compare?

The Sony is a 4K projector, and the titan is really a 2K projector. The Sony cannot do 3D, and is really made for D-Cinema applications, not really for the home. The Sony has no HDMI hookups, and really should be connected to Sony D Cinema server. The Titan now has HDMI 1.4a hookups, and works much better with a wide majority of Bluray players out there. I was sprechen of the SRXR320P.

Well, two of my theater just have old fashion on walls surrounds. There were no in walls that could mate with my custom front speakers, so I had to choose the surrounds that were designed to mate with my front speakers. However, the newer in walls from Sonance and Speakercraft allow you to aim the tweeters and midranges towards the listening position, so beaming is becoming much less a problem with in walls.

Right on...good stuff.

I'm coming to the conclusion that any playback system that was optimized for both two-channel and multiple channel reproduction would necessarily be compromised with video playback insofar as that integration of a full size screen (40 ft. as mentioned) with standard (non inwall) speaks would be challenging.

40' x 70' is a bit hard to image for my needs, let's say 18' x 25'.

My system would look something like this; (see links) ...

Multi-media computer = Moneual 972X (http://moneualusa.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=315&Itemid=186)
3D Blu-ray player = Oppo BDP-95 (http://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-95/)
HD satellite receiver/PVR = Bell ExpressVu 9241 (http://www.bell.ca/shopping/en_CA_ON.HD-PVR-Plus-receiver/62129.details?paymentSku=televisionterm36m_HD_PVR# tabCont1-tabs) (rental)
Pre/pro = Anthem D2v (http://www.anthemav.com/products/anthem-statement/processor/d-2v)
Front, side, rear speakers = 7 x Genelec 8050A (http://www.genelec.com/products/2-way-monitors/8050a/)
Subwoofer = Genelex 7071A (http://www.genelec.com/products/subwoofers/7071a/)
3D TV = Panasonic 60' TC-P60GT30 plasma (https://panasonic.ca/english/audiovideo/plasma/tcp50_55_60_65gt30.asp)
HDMI cables = Blue Jeans Series-1 (http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/hdmi-dvi-cables/index.htm)
XLR cables (for speakers) = Blue Jeans Belden 1800F (http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/balancedaudio/index.htm)
Oughta work pretty well :D

Nope, that is not the case anymore. You have many options these days of incorporating two channel, and multichannel audio with very wide screen visuals. One is a curved screen which allows the left and right mains to be properly placed equi-distant to the optimal seat with the center speaker. Another way with a flat screen is to toe in the main left and right speakers behind the screen, and the allow the controller "account" for the difference in distance with the center speaker to the optimal seat.

You could also use a retractable screen like I do on my 7.1 Dunalvy SC-V setup, and baffle wall based ATC system. With a tap on a Ipad2, the screen rises up and out of the way.

When doing these kinds of complex music and video setups, you have to really use your technology, industry based standards(i.e SMPTE and THX), your imagination, and think outside of the box.
