About a week ago I was watching Tron on the bedroom system and notice that awful cracking, sound when the mid to bass parts came through the surrounds. I pulled the grill off the old Pro 77's and saw the dreaded sign of aged speakers.

The foam edging was gone on one and about 3/4 on the other. I started my search online with ebay to find another pair, but they are thin pickings these days and the price on the ones found is way to high for the age of these speakers. I went over to parts express and found something that caught my eye.

The HiVi M5N 5" woofer http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=297-436, it is not a drop in replacement, but I felt it would give me what I wanted.
I had to remove the spring loaded connector in the rear to make room for the large magnet and keep the grills off to give the frame room. once installed the sound was way more than I expected and are easily driven. I may have to move them to the front L & R and put the LX 5's in the rear.

Still have to do some more molding and filling and that will only tighten the bass and over all tone of the speaker.

Cool. Looks like a very nice job. Those metalic woofers do look great.
