MAINLY, they were using obsolete Apache software with
NO firewall.
BASICALLY an invitation to get gangraped.
THE WONDER IS THAT it didnt happen sooner.:1:

Pix, do you really understand the difference between how they did it, and the "reason" they did it?

These are two different things...don't you know this?

Your post title is very misleading.

THE QUESTION is...
do you?
This is a thread on "how" it happened, with the thought that it
might not have happened with a little corporate responsibility
on Sony's part.
CRIMINALS are going to do what they do, mounting a proper defense would have prevented this whole episode.
THERE WAS a ton of user information on this site, and
SONY'S RESPONSIBILITY to the users was obvious,
and neglected.
HERES hoping they do better in the future.:1:

If this is about how, then was it the word "reason" in your title? Your title states as follows:

Real reason behind the Sony "hack". I saw no reason, just how it was done. And you say you know the difference?

Intelligence and word meanings are not your strong suit, that is for sure.

And reading comprehension is not yours.
THE Sony servers were a target of opportunity . If you leave a
suitcase full of hundred dollar bills on the curb, security types
won't show much sympathy when it disapears.
AND I am a security type. And when a crime occurs the
"reason" is the opportunity more often than the motive.
SONY HAD NO FIREWALL, and outdated Apache software.
THIS IS "why" they were hacked, the motives of the hackers
are irrelevant , because with no firewall and obsolete software
somebody is going to attack this target of opportunity
sooner or later. DOESN'T MATTER much why.
NOW you can deduct as to the "why" in your effort to catch
the perp, would help in catching them.
BUT the motive would not be the reason. Because with
no firewall and crappy software somebody is going to take
advantage, just a matter of time.
BUT with decent software and firewall the hack might not have happened at all.
WHEN most thefts occurs its because a breech was discovered
in the security. Sometimes you can create a breech, but most
times its much simpler to take advantage of an already occurring
flaw in the fortress wall.
AS USUAL you are concerned more with insignificant details
than the actual reasons as to what happened.
You can track down these criminals, catch them, and a motive will
help, sure. BUT QUITE often a motive is not known until the perp
is in sight. THEY don't leave notes at the scene of the crime
as to why they did the crime, savew for some terrorist groups.:1:

You addressed how, but not the reason. You still don't understand what reason means.

Reason:

The basis or motive for an action, decision, or conviction. See Usage Notes at because, why.
2. A declaration made to explain or justify action, decision, or conviction: inquired about her reason for leaving.
3. An underlying fact or cause that provides logical sense for a premise or occurrence:

Do you see the word "how" anywhere in this definition?

CAN'T SEE the forest for the trees, as usual, about as dense as
a low lying fog.
You fly by the dictionary, I FLY BY REAL LIFE.
Not to mention that your "definition" matches what I WAS SAYING, and if you had an IQ higher than 12 you might understand that.
"THE basis or motive for an action", in this case the "basis" or "motive" was a hole in the security you could drive a MACK
truck through. Doesn't matter much what they wanted, if
there is a trial it might be presented, but the reason
it happened was because the guard was down.
You really need to stop trolling every post I MAKE WITH YOUR STUPID , idiotic nonsense...PLEASE.:1:

I'll quote your post:

"An underlying fact or cause that provides logical sense for a premise or occurrence"

The OP stated that an older version of Apache was the result of the Sony servers being hacked. I think his original posts meets your definition of "reason". Of course, you could be pedantic just to argue the point I guess.

Sony was forwarned about the dangers of their setup, and chose to ignore it. That's criminal negligence imho and they should be heavily fined and charged with whatever the law can throw at them.

THANKS.
Its a sad fact of life that , without due dilligence, you will
get an attack on the web, just a matter of time.
Thats why they make firewalls, after all.:1:

Dave,
Sorry but this does not fly. You are addressing HOW, not why. The reason for the hack has nothing to do with how. When you understand the difference, you can see that the clueless OP did not address the reason at all, but how it was done.

The older version of Apache is not the reason Sony was hacked. The REASON Sony was hacked was because of Sony attempt to prosecute George Hotz for jail breaking his PS3, and posting that information on you tube and his website. Read:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Computer_Entertainment_America_v._George_Hotz

This addresses the reason. The older version of Apache addresses how, which is not in the title of this post.

I was thinking that the reason they were hacked was to steal people's ID's and CC#'s.

Payback was the reason. Stealing ID's and CC# was to prove that they actually did what they said they would do.

AND if you couldn't hack their site the people who did this would have moved on to the next one.
YOU can never "stop" a criminal, but you can make it very
difficult to the point that they will go somewhere else.:1:

From a legal standpoint this is a scemantic argument over commonly defined terms.

The crime was accomplished via access through an outdated Apache program. That was the opportunity or how it was done.
The crime was committed using the hacker's computers. Those instruments would be the means.
To exact retribution for a grievance against Sony would have been the motive.

And just to drive this point home(thanks Sticks)

motive [ˈməʊtɪv]
n
1. (Psychology) the reason for a certain course of action, whether conscious or unconscious.

NEITHER of which matters if you have a proper defense.
HOWEVER, let down your guard and anybody can help themselves...AND WILL.:1:

The best offense is a good defense. MOTIVE is one factor that helps prove a case, but is never the reason.
A crime is almost always committed on a target of opportunity.
YOU ALWAYS hear about some poor girl being grabbed off the
street, ever hear of one being grabbed out of a church or school?
DOESNT MATTER what the perp wanted, if defense is good,
they won't be able to do it.
THERE was a highway sniper in OHIO a few back, he didnt care
who he shot. WASNT UNTIL THEY STARTED decoding his pattern
that they started making progress.:1:

History has proven over and over that there really is no defense against hacking. Even the Department of Defense knows this, they have been hacked repeatedly over the years. Hackers can always find an opportunity in cyberspace. An old troll like you probably does not know this.

I know more than you think.
And why they hacked SONY is a "motive", but the reason
they hacked SONY is because it was a target of opportunity,
the only reason criminals ever break into anything.
With a proper defense it might very well not have happened.
AS FOR HACKS into govt sites, this is more an example of govt incompetence more than anything else.:1:

This is going to be yet another thread in which you invent your own definitions for pre existing words, isn't it?

Sir Terrence the Terrible
06-12-2011, 04:28 PM
Well Sticks, at least he is consistent. He had re-invented how whole technologies work, so word definitions are going to be a piece of cake.
