Com·post (ˈkäm-ˌpōst, especially British -ˌpäst): a mixture that consists largely of decayed organic matter and is used for fertilizing and conditioning land

I lurked for a few years before signing up in 2003; spent a bunch of time in the gear forums until I heard the arguments on interconnects so many times I didn’t care anymore. Sometime around 2005, I decided to dip my toes in Rav Recs. I had no idea who you all were; no idea who the bands were that you listened to and talked about. Largely still don’t. But, I hung on because at least there was abundant enthusiasm. I was aware of the snail mail comp swap culture, but always felt it would be too intrusive to insert myself into this tight community, especially since my musical awareness was by comparison unremarkable.

Then the electronic world caught up around 2006. Once a few souls started putting comps up for download, the barrier to participation fell away for me. I think I’ve grabbed almost everything posted since. I honestly say that the comps I’ve gotten from Rav Recs have profoundly influenced my listening habits and have kept my enthusiasm for new music going ever since.

I’m starting this thread as part homage, part thanks (a large part), and most importantly as a call to you Rav Rec’ers to put your mind where you ears are and put up some comps. I wanna hear something that has your stamp on it. Throwing up a link to some album uploaded on some blog is nice but a bit of an empty gesture compared to what I know many of you put into your comps.

I’ll post comps from the past and a few of my own on a periodic basis. I hope you all will keep the faith and pony up as well. I’ll post flac and I urge others to do the same. Revive an old favorite, request a comp, or fertilize us with something new.

The year 2006. The comp: “Jim Clark’s 2006 Year End Compilation”

There were a handful of YEC’s put up at the end of 2006. Jim’s was the one that I owe the biggest debt to for opening my ears. 20 artists, 19 of which were unknown to me plus a real beauty of a song from Paul Simon. It’s a really well done mix that I still go back to. From this point on I started taking this forum seriously (well, sort of seriously) and the rewards have been pretty darn good. Thanks, Jim!

noddinOff, I second all of your sentiments. This is a very unique community and I can't imagine another one like it on the internets. Progressive Ears is very community minded also but doesn't hold a candle to this place. RR and all of its peeps is very special and dear to my heart. ((((Group Hug!))))

I'd be happy to post some stuff if someone gives me a step-by-step on how to do it. The few times that I've tried have not been successful. You can listen but not download.

For me, the birth of the iPod Shuffle God and playlists killed my comp-making. But I have a few playlists that I could recreate and post.

Slosh had contributed a ton of good music to my collection. I frequently rip his comps and hand them to my friends who then think that I have the hip and cool of someone more hip and cool than I am. My wife, on the other hand, can’t stand Slosh comps. Thus, they are seldom played at home. Such is life.

The next two composts I’m upping are from him. “Slosh’s Sounds Good” from 2008 was a successful group comp with the criteria

> First and foremost it has to be a song you really dig. Well-recorded audiophilia pap is still pap.
> It has to be one of those recordings that makes all the money you spent on your audio gear seem justified. (http://forums.audioreview.com/showpost.php?p=237694&postcount=1)

All in all a great comp and a potential reference CD when you have gear to show off.

01 Nina Nastasia - One Old Woman
02 John Vanderslice - The Parade
03 Magnolia Electric Co. - Talk To Me Devil, Again
04 Low - Dinosaur Act
05 Calexico - El Picador
06 Robyn Hitchcock - Mexican God
07 Cake - Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle
08 Morphine - Thursday
09 Thievery Corporation - The Richest Man In Babylon
10 Galactic - Paint
11 Massive Attack - Future Proof
12 Porcupine Tree - Slave Called Shiver
13 Guster - C'mon
14 Richard Buckner - Goner w/Souvenir
15 Justin Townes Earle - Who Am I To Say?
16 The Wailin' Jennys - One Voice
17 Mark Knopfler/Emmylou Harris - Right Now
18 Califone - St. Augustine (A Belly Full Of Swans)
19 Iron & Wine - Wolves (Song Of The Shepherd's Dog)
20 House Of Freaks - You Can Never Go Home

The ‘new to me’ highlights were Talk to Me Devil, Again, & Wolves (Song of the Shepherd’s Dog). Also pleased that a few faves from my collection made the cut, notably (IMO) Mexican God.

I wasn’t really intending to go chronological on this, but then I started listening to Slosh’s 2006 Year End Compilation. So many good songs, starting right off with two great tracks to loosen you up and settle you in for a good listen. It had multiple tracks from a few of the artists and that added to the continuity throughout. Led me to more than one album purchase.

01 Babyshambles - I Wish
02 Loose Fur - Thou Shalt Wilt
03 The Decemberists - O Valencia!
04 The Black Heart Procession - Not Just Words
05 Built to Spill - Traces
06 Grandaddy - Disconnecty
07 The Black Heart Procession - GPS
08 Sparklehorse - Ghost In The Sky
09 Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor
10 Babyshambles - The Blinding
11 Built to Spill - Conventional Wisdom
12 Thom Yorke - Black Swan
13 Grandaddy - Rear View Mirror
14 Loose Fur - An Ecumenical Matter
15 Sparklehorse - Getting It Wrong
16 Grandaddy - Summer...It's Gone
17 Calexico - Bisbee Blue
18 The Decemberists - Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then)
19 Calexico - Panic Open String
20 Loose Fur - Answers To Your Questions

I remember that one. We done good. The sound was excellent and the material was top notch.

I most remember Davey's 2007 Holiday Mixer, a couple from you and a several from Slosh. At some point this weekend I'll search the stacks and spindles for one or more of those. Plus, I might have a new trick or two up my sleeve.

Thanks for starting this thread D.

Personally, I wouldn't (and don't) pay. The downside of being cheap is a wait between downloads and links that go dead eventually. The upside is free. Free options keep getting better.

I was playing around last night and made a mix tape fora friend. Yes, not a CD Comp, mix tape, all from vinyl. Was a nice change of pace. Bunch of old crap on a 60 minute tape:

Side A
Moonage Daydream - David Bowie
Jeepster - T. Rex
Trash - New York Dolls
Let me Try - MC5
Lust for Life - Iggy Pop
White Punks on Dope - The Tubes

Side B
Ballroom Blitz - Sweet
Mama Weer All Crazee Now - Slade
All the Young Dudes - Mott the Hoople
Rock Hard - Suzi Quatro
Strutter - Kiss
Barracuda - Heart
Cowboy Song - Thin Lizzy

Might try to figure out a way to put it on my computer/iPod before I give it away.

I got this on CD from Davey around 2007. I made a comment somewhere on the boards and he sent this along thinking I might like it. Long story short, he nailed it. This is a beautiful compilation. I’ve got it playing now. The Trials of Harrison Hayes is gorgeous and poignant piece. One among several. You can really wallow in sorrow or beauty in this comp. Both at the same time actually. Great poetry throughout. Love The Marabou Shuffle but can’t quite pinpoint why… Brit New Wave Surf Country Gothic? Light So Dim has turned me on to Song:Ohia & Califone. Led me via other connections to The National and to Son Volt. I need to pick up some Wayne Robbins & and others. It’s made an impact on my listening.

I remember once linking to a web page where he lists all the compilations he’s made. It goes on and on. As you can hear from this one, all that practice results in an excellent listen. I was actually thinking of Davey’s page when I decided to start this Compost thread. I can’t find that link anymore; maybe Davey can put it up. I’d love if any of those would find away onto this thread. I’m very willing to help out if wished.

01 Animals That Swim - 50 Dresses
02 Richard Davies - Confederate Cheerio Call
03 Shack - Hazy
04 Television - Shane, She Wrote This

I think it was this comp that started me to realize that there’s a few of you on this board that listen to way more music than I can begin to imagine. nobody is like a new music machine. I like his comps because they cover a ton of ground, never fail to introduce something new, and make me appreciate the power of a well composed, structured, tight, bit of pop, punk, retro, (name your genre). I also like that he doesn’t shy away from the one off wonders either. Always fun comps and this one of several I have.

01 The Raconteurs - Steady, As She Goes
02 Artic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor
03 Groovie Ghoulies - Carol
04 The Strokes - Juicebox

One more post before I get to back work on reviewing a manuscript that is likely to split my brain in two before I’m done.

Today is Friday. Massachusetts is finally getting some beautiful weather. Although, I shouldn’t gripe about the rain we've been getting after all the destruction the tornadoes have been causing elsewhere. (I just made my first donation to the American Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org/portal/site/en/menuitem.d8aaecf214c576bf971e4cfe43181aa0/?vgnextoid=46f51a53f1c37110VgnVCM1000003481a10aRCR D). I hope it helps somebody!)

In MA, it’s starting to look like summer and I thought I could compost something from Bobsticks in honor of the promise of beautiful days ahead. Summer breezes with a world voice.

01 Ali Farke Toure & Toumani Diabate - Simbo
02 Ruben Gonzalez - Melodia Del Rio
03 Taj Mahal & Ramata Diakate/ Taj Mahal-Toumani Diabate: Kulanjan - Queen Bee

Man, people hated that one. Nice work.

For a while, Davey's 2007 holiday mixer had made it into my regular playlist. I'll poke around and see if I can't find it. I also have a recent playlist of a more "poppy" nature that might be seasonally appropriate.

Any issues with the iLivid download Noddy?

Dood, I'm just stunned somebody, anybody actually listened, let alone enjoyed a comp with music I like : )

To be fair I need to point out that a lot of my favorites on that particular disc came from folks around here that I trust completely with good recs.
Davey turned me on to Woven Hand and oddly enough, The Appleseed Cast. Odd since they are a local band that recorded the disc a 30 miles from my home. Stone - Pretty Girls Make Graves. Mike sent me the most excellent Electric President. Every now and then I check up on that band to see if they have something new. I'm sure there's more but 2006 was a long time ago for me! I need to find my copy to listen to this weekend.

I've still got binder after binder of Rave Rec comps. And yes, I still listen to them too.

I've got Davey's 2007 Mixer and will get to it eventually if you don't. I'm no download expert. Never tried iLivid, go for it. Megaupload has been very easy to manage for me, has fairly generous file size limits, doesn't make you wait too long, and doesn't embarrass me with racy adds when I launch it at work. These have been my criteria. What ever works!

Yeah, glad to hear someone has enjoyed some of the stuff. And Jim, I still from time to time will dig out You Can't Surf in Kansas. I also really got a lot of mileage from maf's songs of 1979, although I must admit I have gone mostly iPod and vinyl nowadays and therefore have lost track of a lot of good comps.

Funny thing is just had to travel in a rental and dug out some CDs for the ride and started missing them.

Not all comps can be winners. So, I figure I should start reducing expectations. I made this one for myself several years ago when writing grants on deadlines. I wanted something that could keep me awake while burning the midnight oil and provide focus but not distract me too much. Usually I turn to something like Mingus. This time I started building a playlist and it morphed into a comp. Around the same time (c. 2006) I think there was a teeny tiny uptick in jazz interest on the boards and I posted this as non-traditional jazz. This compost works for me but YMMV.

01 The Lounge Lizards - Voice Of Chunk
02 Stanton Moore - Things Fall Apart
03 Medeski, Martin & Wood - Partido Alto
04 Sun Ra and his Myth Science Arkestra - Moon Dance
05 Liquid Soul - Intro
06 Liquid Soul - Threadin' The Needle
07 Freddie Hubbard - Red Clay
08 Bill Frisell - Alias
09 Liquid Soul - Salt Peanuts/Chocolate Covered Nut
10 Galactic - What You Need [w-Lyrics Born] - lossless
11 Bullfrog - Alright: Music for More Morning People
12 Screaming Headless Torso - Word To Herb
13 Jacqui Naylor - Black Coffee

Highlights for me on this might be the Lounge Lizards (I'm a fan) and also Bil Frisell. I picked up the Bil Frisell album based on an AR recommendation and would re-recommend it.

ditto, noddin. I was a little hesitant to get in on the comp exchanges because I knew I would not be very diligent in reciprocating. I received my first RR comp from Jim Clark in Dec 2004. It really got me up to speed on new music (sparked lots of purchases including Modest Mouse, Yo La Tengo, Snow Patrol, Eleventh Dream Day et al.) and I've tried to keep up ever since. Interestingly, my son made off with the JC comp for a while. He eventually returned it, I think. I'll try to find it.

Heh. Nice try, bobs. I got sumpop easily enough and have given it 3-4 listens. My muffler dropped off my car Wednesday so I spend many hours in Panera Thursday working and waiting with sumpop on repeat. It's not easy to work Contact into a comp, interesting pick. I rather enjoyed flashing back to the 80's/90's and then forward. I think I enjoyed the center of the mix most, roughly tracks 6-11 and the last 3 as well. Thanks!

Hope you find it dean! I'm curious.

Here’s a fresh comp that I’ve been obsessing myself with and am calling finished as of today. I feel I owe an explanation to whoever downloads it... I keep a playlist where I drop odd songs that cling to me. I never actually listen to this song bucket; it just holds stuff. Now and then, when I get obsessed, I’ll pull out some tracks and attempt to thread them to some poorly defined theme playing in my head (emphasis on my head). I don’t worry too much about being current or original per se. Lately, I’ve been listening to a bunch of stuff with loops and samples and noises. After about 20+ listens, I think I have a compilation that flows pretty well (flow being rather subjective here). This might go down better with headphones and maybe a good drink to prime the mind...or unplug it (my recommendation is Hendricks gin stirred over ice and strained, slice of cucumber optional).

Anyway, give it a listen and see if it floats your boat or, if you prefer, let it wash up on the shores of some digital landfill. Let me know.

01 The Books - All Our Base Are Belong to Them
02 Tunng - The Wind Up Bird
03 Land of the Loops - Multi-Family Garage Sale
04 The Karminsky Experience Inc. - Exploration
05 When - Puff Pipe
06 Pink Floyd - Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun
07 The Heliocentrics - Distant Star
08 Orbital - Sad But True
09 The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds
10 Fujiya & Miyagi - Collarbone
11 The Alps - Crossing the Sands
12 When - As Speak You Are
13 The Beta Band - Broken Up Adingdong
14 Tunng - People Folk
15 The Books - The Lemon of Pink I

The Alps album, Le Voyage is pretty good for ambient wordless noodling, the track above is far more driving than the rest of the album. Land of Loops will show up in another noddin comp I’ll put up, I feel bad about reusing it. The Books, I’ve gone on about in the spinning thread.

I used to put that one on all my mixtapes! Thanks for this thread. I've actually never uploaded a comp. - maybe this'll encourage me to try...I just got a new sweet headphone amp - Woo Audio 6SE - so I'll be doing lots of sitting and listening in coming weeks.

It's been forever since I've made a new comp, but figured I'd go for it. Was kinda fun and was listening in the car earlier. This one is mp3, so sorry for that if you're wanting FLAC. Most of it I have FLAC, but not all and some is vinyl and tape that I grabbed mp3s to use instead and all...besides this is an online board so I was hoping it would be OK. This one's a bit all over the place, but it is all from 2011 and revives the "Half Gone" moniker...which I think I am stealing from Davey? Sorry 'bout that. Anyway, here's the track list and link:

One Way Ticket to the Moon - <b>Roy Ellis</b>
Shari Vari - <b>The Dirtbombs</b>
Tinsel & Glitter - <b>Fujiya and Miyagi</b>
The World (Is Going Up in Flames) - <b>Charles Bradley</b>
Go Outside - <b>Cults</b>
Calyer - <b>Beach Fossils</b>
Already in Love - <b>Exene Cervenka</b>
Let U Down - <b>Those Darlins</b>
Bad Boy - <b>Hunx and his Punx</b>
German Reggae - <b>Teenage Panzerkorps</b>
Diablo! - <b>Davilla666</b>
No Romance - <b>Mind Spiders</b>
Post Break-Up Sex - <b>The Vaccines</b>
You Gotta Lose - <b>Obits</b>
Heart is a Beating Drum - <b>The Kills</b>
Love Me Like You Used To Do - <b>Skybombers</b>
Cannibal Courtship - <b>Dengue Fever</b>
Forget That You're Young - <b>The Raveonettes</b>
Openings - <b>Zomes</b>
Limit to Your Love - <b>James Blake</b>
Creep On Creepin In -<b> Timber Timbre</b>
Portland - <b>Middle Brother</b>

Let it never be said that Finch skimps on tracks in his compilations. If any of you have received a past Finch comp in the mail, you’ll understand a bit of the charm behind these. Extensive hand typed printouts of tracks listings and lots of freebies usually come with. Of the comps I’ve received from Finch, this is the one I like most. There’s several of tracks I like, starting right with the first two. Emphasis generally on guitar, prog, and fusion. I’ll confess that my leanings don’t tend toward prog and fusion, although AR has converted me over to Porcupine Tree, and on this list I enjoy the Ozric Tantacles track.

01 Neal Schon/Beth Hart - I wanna know you
02 David Bowie - Dead Man Walking (acoustic from the Conan O'Brian show)
03 Incubus - Drive (acoustic)
04 Dave Weckl Band - Crossing Paths (live)
05 Ozric Tentacles - unknown track
06 Gino Vannelli - Brother to Brother
07 Steve Winwood - Night Train
08 Fishbone - Alcoholic *hic*
09 Oysterhead - Rubberneck Lions
10 Unknown - radio spot
11 Bill Conners - Crunchy Cuts Up
12 Sirenia - My Mind's Eye
13 Evanescence - Call Me When You're Sober (piss off, beeyatch!)
14 Dawn Over Zero - Take You Under
15 Gary Hoey - Money
16 Artis the Spoonman - Plantin'
17 Class of '99 - Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. II
18 Larry Carlton - Sapphire Blues
19 Larry Carlton - A Pair of Kings
20 Robben Ford - Talk to Your Daughter
21 Unknown - radio spot (Bartle's & Jame Brown)
22 Bob Log III - Boob Scotch
23 Dada - Dim (live)
24 The Who - Love Ain't for Keeping (live)
25 Adam Sandler - Ode to My Car (bleeped version
26 Abraxas Pool - unknown
27 Gov't Mule - Mule
28 Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Black Planet
29 Pete Townsend - Give Blood
30 Subdivision (tribute band) - 2112
31 Tower of Power - What is Hip

I’ve got several from Finch. However, I haven’t gone back to hand enter in the Artist/Track metadata for many. It’s a bit rough for 4 CD sets. I’ll put up what I’ve annotated. I’ve got a Band of Babyshambles comp that I really enjoy, e.g. (although I’m still working out what the tracks are…)

Listening to this again to start another Monday. As always, I'm impressed how easily you can pull up scores of great current tracks from so many groups and genres. I don't think I could listen to that much music, even if I tried to, in order to come up with your 'short' lists.

Today, I'm digging the the tracks by Dengue Fever (tingles of fatalic sleeze), The Kills (not sure why I like this one, maybe the crunchy buzz), Middle Brother (sounds solid and honest), Zomes (just for the drone), & Exene Cervenka (I missed out on X entirely. This sounds nice--although on the fence about the horns)

Glad you guys are enjoying it. A couple notes, the rest of that Exene is pretty-much horn free. Also, kinda surprised you mentioned the Zomes. That was one I threw on there because I like it, but nothing I really expected to hear anyone else mention positively. Glad to see I'm not the only one.

I've been listening to that James Blake (self-titled) album too and am still on the fence (but slowly getting off of it). I really like the atmospheres, textures and wobbly uncertainty of the sound. He casts an impressive spell for a debut. But, I've never been of fan of /*begin inability to name a genre*/ that smooth bedroomy R&B ballad kind of sound /*end*/. The third track The Wilhelm Scream is the clearest example of what I'm thinking of. Although, to be fair, I think that track is really a very good one, that more than makes up for my aversions. I never listen to the radio anymore so I don't know if he's getting any airplay. If it were me, I'd pick Wilhelm as the one to push on the air.

I suspect this album will only grow on me.

Today I’ll compost two more from Slosh. Both are from 2007 and both got many listens from me.

Faux Punk is one of my favorites from AR. I had several tracks from this one stuck in my head for weeks. I probably would’ve liked the McLusky track for the Song:Album titles alone but the song rocks as well. I picked up that album. I got hooked on the Cat Power track and have since picked up her great back catalog. I’m of the long held opinion that Add it Up my be one of, if not the best song of the 80’s, and should rank very high for rock in general. Stephen Malkmus, Auto Lux, Les Savy Sav…great tracks. Lots to like.

01 Sparklehorse - Pig: Good Morning, Spider
02 Grandaddy - 50%: Just Like The Fambly Cat
03 Frodus - Red Bull Of Jaurez: And We Washed Our Weapons In The Sea
04 Enon - Old Dominion: High Society
05 McLusky - Without MSG I Am Nothing: The Difference Between Me And You Is That I'm Not On Fire
06 Les Savy Fav - The Sweat Descends: Inches
07 Bloc Party - Helicopter: Silent Alarm
08 Autolux - Blanket: Future Perfect
09 The Dismemberment Plan - What Do You Want Me To Say?: Emergency & I
10 Chisel - Red Haired Mary: 8 AM All Day
11 Beck - Minus: Odelay
12 Cat Power - He War: You Are Free
13 Pinback - AFK: Summer In Abaddon
14 Kid Dakota - Ivan: The West Is The Future
15 Rogue Wave - Love's Lost Guarantee: Descended Like Vultures
16 The Wrens - Hopeless: The Meadowlands
17 The Clash - Hateful: London Calling
18 Stephen Malkmus - I've Hardly Been: Face The Truth
19 Violent Femmes - Add It Up: Violent Femmes
20 Super Furry Animals - Sidewalk Serfer Girl: Rings Around The World
21 Tapes 'n Tapes - Insistor: The Loon
22 The White Stripes - Fell In Love With A Girl: White Blood Cells
23 Sublime - Same In The End: Sublime
24 Spoon - Quincy Punk Episode: A Series Of Sneaks

Slosh put out 2007 compilations in stages. There was an End of Summer Comp, a 3/4 Comp, and a Year End Overflow comp. I don’t seem to have a Best of 2007. I’m wondering if I missed it? I know I’ve had problems working with wma lossless files, perhaps I wasn’t able to convert it at the time.

Anyway, this nearly year ender is good. Small Bones Small Bodies is just flat out catchy. Methamphetamine is lovely, Brace Yourself, etc. etc. Got turned on to Josh Ritter, started paying attention many of the bands Sun Volt, Spoon, Wilco.

01 Arctic Monkeys - Brianstorm
02 Future Of The Left - Small Bones Small Bodies
03 Babyshambles - Delivery
04 Les Savy Fav - Brace Yourself
05 Super Furry Animals - Baby Ate My Eightball
06 Earlimart - Everybody Knows Everybody
07 Josh Ritter - Open Doors
08 Pinback - Good To Sea
09 Spoon - Finer Feelings
10 Rob Crow - Taste
11 Gruff Rhys - Gyrru Gyrru Gyrru
12 Arcade Fire - (Antichrist Television Blues)
13 Ted Leo And The Pharmacists - The Unwanted Things
14 Modest Mouse - Missed The Boat
15 Blitzen Trapper - Wild Mountain Nation
16 Okkervil River - Unless It Kicks
17 Richmond Fountaine - Moving Back Home
18 Son Volt - Methamphetamine
19 The Good, The Bad, & The Queen - Behind The Sun

Just wanna mention if you like the electronic textures of that James Blake but are not so into the vocals and such, check out Mount Kimbie. They have done some remix work with Blake and their albums have a lot of similar electronic textures, but without those falsetto vocals and the rest.

That one may actually get me to burn and actual CD. I've pretty well drifted off CDs and just gone all analog at home and MP3s for the road...but that looks like something that may just merit a download and burn to dick and some volume.

Well, my place of employment silently blocked uploads to file sites so I’ve been slow to work around this, letting this thread stall part way through my archives. My apologies.

Today, I’ll spotlight a nice compost from Tentoze. (original thread (http://forums.audioreview.com/rave-recordings/tentozes-tractionless-2k9-y-e-comp-32465.html)). I always enjoy when someone takes on a genre that doesn’t fall in line with the usual here. It doesn't happen often enough. Some of the stand out tracks for me were Davey Brown, Halfway to Jackson, and Whip-poor-will. It’s a good listen. Over the years, I know that I’ve been following the Americana-style posts with growing interest. It’s good to touch base with twang.

01 Felice Brothers - Run Chicken Run
02 The Duke and The King - If You Ever Get Famous
03 Ben Nichols - Davey Brown
04 Subdudes - Redemption Dance
05 Guy Clark - The Guitar
06 Justin Townes Earle - Halfway To Jackson
07 Ha Ha Tonka - walking on the Devil's backbon
08 The Gourds - Luddite
09 John Doe And The Sadies - The Sudbury Nickel
10 Loudon Wainwright - Awful Hungry Hash House
11 Joe Henry - Truce
12 Levon Helm - You Can't Lose What You Ain't
13 Magnolia Electric Co. - Whip-poor-will
14 Willie Nile - Love Is A Train
15 Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - I Don't Belong To Anyone
16 Toni Childs - Howling At the Moon
17 Deadstring Brothers - The River Song
18 Bottle Rockets - Solitaire
19 Lucero - The Devil And Maggie Chascaril
20 A. A. Bondy - I Can See the Pines are Dancin

These were upped as mp3 so it’s a relatively small download (~190MB) (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=R1PP8ILF)

I was feeling kind of jaded about my listening this year, thinking there wasn’t much I really liked and that putting together a year-ender was going to be too much effort. Wallowing in audio self-pity, I suppose. Then, after Xmas, with the turning of the year fast approaching, I got a grip on myself, sucked it up and started picking through the tracks, shuffling them around, giving them some listens. And, BAM! I found myself enjoying it and thinking maybe the year was pretty good after all. Didn’t listen to any new Jazz this year although I don’t think that had anything to do with it. However, I’m sure some of you might be more interested in a jazz-free comp. Who knows?

For what it’s worth, I do this every year for myself. AR got me in the habit but, once acquired, my goal has been to make year-end albums that I would want to listen to as albums. Not shuffles, not bags of singles. I’m pleased with this one. I culled it down from some 30 tracks and cartainly left some good ones on the digital floor. Starts out with some dazzlers, then slides into mellow, gets apprehensive, maybe creepy before straightening out with a bit of the romantic and introspective…or something like that.

Reading the end of year posts has been kind of fun. Man, there’s lot I haven’t listened to this year. Hopefully you can enjoy something you haven’t listened to yet. I know I’m about to preach to the lazy and lethargic here but, really, it won’t kill you to put up a comp of your own 2011 wrap up. I’ll listen to it!

With that, here’s my 2011 Year-ender. Its up on Megaupload where you can hit it in your choice of

Apple Lossless (~475MB) (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0FTOV2OS)
FLAC (~468MB) (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8XAGBNB8)
MP3 (256kbps VBR) (~110MB) (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RIC8KSJX)
...and some jewelcase art if you need it (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Z51D459H)

Noddin’s 2011 Year-ender

01 Battles - Ice Cream (feat.Matias Aguayo)
02 Tune-Yards - Bizness
03 Lamb - Existential Itch
04 Bombay Bicycle Club - How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep
05 Iron & Wine - Me and Lazarus
06 The Decemberists - Dear Avery
07 Tinariwen - Imidiwan Win Sahara
08 James Blake - The Wilhelm Scream
09 The Antlers - Parentheses
10 Radiohead - Little by Little
11 Kurt Vile - On Tour
12 The War on Drugs - I Was There
13 Widowspeak - Limbs
14 Tom Waits - Kiss Me
15 Howe Gelb & a Band of Gypisies - Blood Orange
16 Feist - Comfort Me
17 Lamb - Rounds
18 Wilco - One Sunday Morning (Song for Jane Smiley's Boyfriend)

Total play time is just under 79 minutes, but to be fair 12 of those are that last Wilco song (12 extra minutes well spent, btw)
