Smart a$$....

Actually this is a great question. I saw REO Speedwagon a couple of years ago and it really was very cool (not ironically cool either) to see what happened to the crowd during I Can't Fight This Feeling.

But, my nomination is a song still works on a certain former college cheerleader (my wife) who was trying to piss of her dad by dating the punk rock kid (me). Probably the only song on the list to include an "F"-bomb and "Ect."

I would have picked "One" because in Johnny Got His Gun the nurse gives Joe an HJ. That's love.

I Can't Get Over You While You're Under Him

On a more serious note, I like :
Only With You
(Beach Boys -- HOLLAND)

...would be God Only Knows. The average listener has no idea how complex and technically difficult the melodies and vocal harmonies are in this song. It's also considered by many to be among the greatest songs ever recorded. Shame on me for not selecting this one first.

The Pogues: Rainy Night in Soho

I've been loving you a long time
Down all the years, down all the days
And I've cried for all your troubles
Smiled at your funny little ways
We watched our friends grow up together
And we saw them as they fell
Some of them fell into Heaven
Some of them fell into Hell

I took shelter from a shower
And I stepped into your arms
On a rainy night in Soho
The wind was whistling all its charms
I sang you all my sorrows
You told me all your joys
Whatever happened to that old song
To all those little girls and boys

Sometimes I wake up in the morning
The gingerlady by my bed
Covered in a cloak of silence
I hear you talking in my head
I'm not singing for the future
I'm not dreaming of the past
I'm not talking of the fist time
I never think about the last

Now the song is nearly over
We may never find out what it means
Still there's a light I hold before me
You're the measure of my dreams
The measure of my dreams

The Ring on the Sill
by the Cowboy Junkies

She placed her ring on the sill
Dishes piled high
She's on the front porch step
And the air smells like snow
She's thinking of the siege to come
And how she'll miss those weekends in the park
With the sun on her face, and her book by her side
And that lingering taste that he left on her tounge

He lifts his glass from the table
It leaves a ring where it stood
He sees a light from a window
Caress her like he knows he should
He's remembering the first time he kissed her
And how he'd wake and immediately he'd miss her
Like a spell, with each breath
He'd taste her breath like a haunting
Irritating as hell

Do you remember when you prayed you'd never see the day
Someone would make you feel this way
'Cause you knew it would cut right through you
Once inside, you were afraid they'd find
Nothing to hold on to

He puts her ring on her finger
She brushes back his hair
He takes a sip from his glass
She inhales the cold fall air
They're thinking of the long road ahead
And the strength that they'll need just to reach the end
And there in the silence, they search for the balance
Between this fear that they feel
And the love that has graced their lives

I Never Did Sing You a Love Song

I never did sing you a love song
I only sang phrases in time
I never did write you a sonnet
I just laid my words down in rhymes
Up and down the river, so many boats to ride
Yet precious few deliver the goods that we need to survive

I never spoke falsely or crossly
I never put tears in your eyes
And you never shattered my lonely heart
You never deceived me with lies
And yet somehow I seem to recall I stirred in my sleep for a while
Dreaming of a river man exchanging my life for a smile

Yeah, I had to struggle with "taking the bait" too. My initial, immediate thought was, "I don't want too hear any songs by The Stork, I want to hear a song about her..

...a funeral dirge.".

RR needs more country fans. Not alt country or roots, but mainstream Nashville country. Country fans understand the true lack of actual love songs in pop and rock. Most pop and rock "love songs" are actually about broken/cheatin' hearts. Country has an abundance of true love songs, many that actually rock out quite a bit.

How can you not love these jams?

Brad Paisley - Waitin' on a woman.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-C-IbkuNWs&feature=related

Sammy Kershaw - She Don't Know She's Beautiful.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTXXchDKKfw

Keith Whitley - When you Say Nothing at All
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GpXYKp7_Qw

and of course just "Love"
