I've been listening a lot to this recent vinyl rip of Astral Weeks, the one that Kevin Gray mastered, and it does sound very nice. As most fans probably know, this CD has never sounded very good compared to the great sounding early vinyl release. The green label one, though I also have a later palm tree WB and it sounds great too. There is a new Japan SHM CD that sounds very good, and isn't nearly as compressed as most new remasters. And the tone is pretty well preserved. But man, when you put on the vinyl rip it just sounds so much more right. No harshness on Van's voice, and he does like the mics that push it to the edge. And I'm just talking the 44.1K rip, the guy that did the vinyl rip has it available in 24/96 too, which is probably way better. I should probably grab it before it's gone, the record label lawyers kind of frown on these downloads so they tend to show up empty after a short while :)

If you're a fan, get it (http://avaxhome.ws/music/audiophile/vamorris_astweek_improvedvinylrip.html) while you still can.

Yea, me too. Looks like the rapidshare links are gone, but filefactory is still up. Gonna be a slow download.

I finished Part 1 fairly quickly but have top wait 1700 seconds to even start the Pt.2 DL. Wonder what's in store to DL Pt.s 3, 4 & 5.

Can't complain tho. If it's free, it's for me.

It does sound very good, even without his using a top of the line vinyl rig. Those file sizes get pretty big, pretty fast, even in flac, huh? 140M vs 40M on the opening Astral Weeks :)

I'm certainly enjoying getting reacquainted with this classic. Nice recording. I've been doing the vinyl rip thing with my LP collection (24/96) and actually prefer most of them to the redbook CDs.

I also tried a few more from the website with no luck.

Cheers,

There's some free software you use to convert those 24/96 FLAC files to DVD-A (DVDaudiofile) or 24/96 DVD-V (LPlex).

I never used Lplex because both of my DVD players are universal players, but DVDaudiophile is super simple to use. Just import the FLAC files and it will turn it into a DVD-Audio ISO that you can then burn with any DVD burning software.

Thanks for all the file manipulation advice. Hey, I finally signed up for dropbox and now can stick a flac encoded song in my song of the day signature. I always forget to update it, so it's more like a song of the month signature :)

Today it's some Slush.
