Hi RR Forum -

It was suggested that AudioReview readers would be interested in reading album reviews. Similar to other websites.

Would anyone(s) be interested in writing a bi-monthly column that we'd post at reviews.audioreview.com.

If it works out over the long run, we can approach companies for pre-release sample or sample for the reviewer(s).

Thanks,
-adam

I probably have the time to squeeze one or two out though, frankly, there's many more musically educated folks around here from whom I'd rather read.

After having given it some thought I'd like to nominate Finche, Troy, John Michael, PoppaC, deano, Worfster and Davey to write up some reviews within their particular areas of interest/expertise.

I nominate myself, Swish and Jayrhymmedaddy-o to never, under any circumstances, do a review on any recording. Ever.

Uh, not no, but hell no. My music review suck, although if we were writing about porn flicks/soundtracks, I may be able to lend a hand (heeyuk).

Ah c'mon Finchster. Obviously Bobsticks values your literary expertise, or he's scared of his own.

interests, yes
expertise, no

I thought about this today and realized it probably takes more time and effort than my lazy ass is willing to commit. Some of my "initial impressions" have been so far off base it's not funny. You can't write a legit review after getting through a cd over a 3 or 4 day period in the car. My weekends are for enjoying music on the home rig not studying it.

Just because I'm trying to weasle out doesn't mean I think it's a bad idea. I think some of our guys/gals can do a bang-up job. I'd read'em.

Do you mean reviews of the music itself or the recording of the music?

I'll go first. Here are what I think are the redemptive qualities of Interpol's Turn On The Bright Lights

ah, umm

I'll have to get back to you on this.

That new Iron & Wine really sucks.

I'm OK at writing one-paragraph reviews, but anything beyond that just becomes so much "dancing about architecture," as the saying goes. That's why I usually save up and dump them all together in one swell foop at the end of the year. (Is there an emoticon that signifies "dump"? Just askin'...)

I like to surf reviews, but I'm kind of tired of the one reviewer format. What I'd like to see is 3-5 short punchy bundled reviews from a regular pool of reviewers. That way the review is more like a discourse, you get a broader perspective, and you start to identify with the unique personalities of the reviewers. To me that identification is what makes readers come back for more.

2 cents.

Not a bad idea.............perhaps place genre with expertise ?

For example :

Prog should be reviewed by Yech & Finch.

I like that idea. Expertise is relative, e.g., someone may know a little about a genre that no one else really knows about. Someone who has something to add may shy away from the "expert" label. How about a sign-up-by-genre category and an at-large (for the well-rounded) category?

i just reviewed an old creed album but nobody cared and when i reviewed the black keys some people got upset with the obvious.

and Finch, your reviews wouldn't suck, just your music.

I never cared for Creed, not one iota, so I figured it was better to ignore the thread than to say something negative. You know, like you did with the Black Keys. :p

I get it, it's like a Stereophile Review. Even if something sucks, in your opinion, you have to give it a great review so the sheep run out and buy it.

I find this concept much more favorable...especially if'n it means YECH is coming back :D

I'll not speak for Swishy, and clearly Jay is insane, but my perspective on a lot of popular music is extremely different than many if not most on the board. I'm actually finding the current "geneolgy-of-bands" threads interesting and informative. My understanding of rock music begins and ends on some days with Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division/New Order, krautrock/industrial, and the Rolling Stones, so I'm lacking a lot of the historical context for relevant commentary.

On the other hand, that doesn't in anyway mean I won't debate something I don't understand...

RR def has its personalities.

So how about this -

I like the idea of folks who know more about their area reviewing in that area.

I like the idea of a bunch of reviews together - by multiple writers.

I also like shorter reviews - 1-5 paragraphs - don't have to super well written - but well thought.

I can put them together in a weekly or bi-monthly post.

Topics could/would/should be - but not limited to.
- current release
- quality of a recording (please also talk about your system in this as it is dependent)
- quality of the music on the recording
- if you have a vinyl versus a CD or digital download version of a recording
- where a type of music is going
- who is making waves in an area
- maybe even digging up where did the old #1 hitters now are

Those interested - since this is going on reviews.audioreview.com and I'll have to collect, format, get images, ext - please email these instead of post in forums. email to adam@audioreview.com Topic - Music Review. Or something similar.

I think he we can get a big enough group to send in than no one would have to be fully regular unless they wanted to be. Those of you who would like to write regularly it would be nice to get a short bio on your music taste and gear to ref in these post.

Thanks,
-adam

LMAO! So diplomatic. :D

I'd be happy to write up a couple of review for you if I find something worth writing about. Just don't expect too much in-depth knowledge. I'm not the walking archive that so many others here are. I just know what I like and don't like.

So ONLY positive reviews, right?

The fact that you liked that Creed record and I don't like the band didn't mean I needed to make a negative comment in that thread. You have every right to post a negative review of the Black Keys or anyone else. Now go have a beer and relax. That's an order!

There was a time when we would pick a new album, everyone would listen to it, and then we'd come here to discuss it. Why couldn't we do this for AudioReview? As a group we pick a CD that most people here are going to listen to anyway, each give it a few spins, and then put together a collective review of varying opinions.

Most of us have been hanging out here for 10+ years and have gained a lot from this site and the people here. Adam has been working really hard to improve this site and increase the number of users. So let's give him a hand and kick in a few reviews. It could be fun!
