Dusting off my turntable today, don't have the user's manual. Can't find a ground connection (I seem to remember that hum was a problem last time I used it). Next to the RCA jacks in back there is a round single-pin connector. Anyone know anything about this?

Does it look anything like this?
If so, Badhabit67 is correct.
If you do not have ground wire connected to a phonostage, you will he more hum and music.
