So I just moved my Audio Alchemy DAC to my home studio set up and was getting frustrated because I didn't have a spare preamp handy. I was going directly from my DAC to my powered monitors and had to use the volume control on Foobar because using the volume control on the monitors isn't practical (I found that I could settle for a volume for music but when a system sound played it was loud as all-get-up).
So I grabbed my Totalbithead headphone amp and stuck that in the chain. It really does work great as a preamp as it can be powered through a USB connection while, at the same time, accepting an audio signal through it's 1/8" jack. It obviously solved the problem of trying to fit a headphone amp into the chain.
I just realized that I sound like someone who works for headphone.com. I promise I am not- ha ha. I just wanted to share the idea as I might not have thought of ever using it as a preamp.
Where is my beer?
