Yeah - so CES - in Vegas?

Anyone going? Anyone live in the area, want to open their home for a night and share some music?

I guess my wife and I will be at CES from Jan6-9th. Just looking to maybe meet up w/ some people and have some fun in the evening.

We'll be there.

Unfortunately, I don't have a house there. :)

Btw Adam, check this out: http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2011/01/largest-cave/jenkins-text

I'm trying to organize a group to explore it in 2012, want to join?

I'd love to go to Vietnam but the cave is a little bit of a stretch for me. I've been inside a few and every time I kind of freak out. Maybe that has changed, there are a couple large caves in CA, maybe we should go check them out, see if my fear of not seeing the sky has gone away.

I wanted to go to Vegas that week, for vacation, and Hubby vetoed the idea because of CES! His sales guys will be there and he was afraid that if they found out we were there, they'd make him work. :(

FA that is too bad. I take it he isn't the boss?

Sales guys have way too much power in our world.

We have large caves here?

Let's try sometime when the weather gets better then.

Mammoth Caves in Kentucky is just a 3hr drive from me and very cool. I thoroughly enjoyed that trip.

And I will be at CES along with Hugh. We'll be in room 30-331 if anybody wants to look us up. :) As far as fun evening activities, I'd really like to see Blue Man Group at the Venetian.

If you guys have the chance (and the money) go see KA at the MGM Grand. It's a Cirque du Soliel show based on Martial Arts. We go to a lot of theatre and shows and it is, hands down, the most amazing thing we've ever seen. The music is also great, I bought the soundtrack afterwards, not very good quality unfortunately. The theatre is small and was built for the show, so you don't need top price seats. In fact, you don't want to be any closer than row 10 IMO.

Thanks for the recommendation. I saw a Cirque du Soliel show with the wife for her birthday a few years ago and it was great. A martial arts based show sounds pretty cool.

If anyone gets by the ATI (Amplifer Technology, Inc.) booth and gets wind of any new amps or pres, please make note of it here. Thanks!

I'm holding off on a purchase or two in the hope that these guys have something to announce.

Here is one show report so far. http://audiofederation.com/blog/

Stereophile is usually up by now as well. They post from the hotel not after the fact.

The "Stereophile group" seem to have the best coverage:

LOL.... I didn't include that link because I see it on the side of the page, so I kind of just took it for granted... But yes we most definitely appreciate your coverage...

Here is more - with more Zu stuff as well.

I wish at times that some of the rooms would be more quiet - or be playing music. You know there are so many to see and hear and when you walk in you'd like to get right to the point. But distributors and others who appear to have heard everything there is to hear continue to talk while you listen to stuff.

I'm trying to cover some of the stuff I read about on the forums here - I'm saying the super high end coverage for later. OMG there are some amazing systems, but I think that this point, if I had to pick two - I'd have the Mag 3.7s and the Studio Electric monitors.

What I learned from the first show was that the second time around I will play my own music in the room or I will simply not cover the room and say why.

I am tired of rooms that play their music to their volume and "stack the deck" in what their systems can handle. It may be beautiful but I am going to play a variety of rugged stuff.

It might not be a bad idea to create a couple of your own CD's (a mixed tape) of songs you like, songs that are well enough recorded and run the gambit from rap to oboe solos and everything in between. Moreover, it would save time and space carrying the CD carry case. Make sure the first three tracks run a reasonably wide gambit. Acoustic with a variety of string, percussion, horn, wind etc, then a well recorded hard hitting amplified music piece, and then perhaps a well recorded female vocal. If the system even warrants going forward after three such pieces then it's probably already going to be considered a good stereo at the very least. 3 tracks is really all it takes IMO to determine if it has something worthwhile.

I am going to do my best to make it to CAS.

Trouble is I am not sure Trenner and Freidl will be there and I really do want to hear them again.

I enjoy reading polar opposite responses to rooms but at the same time I want to know what was actually played in the room. One magazine loved the Perfect 8 technologies room while another mag didn't care for it remotely. The latter review was audiofederation's take but Mike is a musician while the other isn't. It would be interesting to find out what music was played during the sessions because the magazine that liked it may have listened to music that played to the strength while the latter didn't like it based on playing something else.

A smaller show also would be less tempting to cover many rooms quickly. I would like to be able to say - I played this track from this artist at a reasonable level, low level, high level and this is what the system did with it. Very few rooms will play anything not deemed audiophile caliber (which is a bit iffy IMO). I like the rooms where they will play 1940's mono or not so great recordings but of great talents. I can say that only three rooms at CES 2010 did that and two of the three rooms were from the same manufacturer. Trenner and Freidl was the other. And they were only a handful of rooms that actually played at levels to get you dancing.
