Josh Ritter played here last night. I had no idea that he was in town. I happened to be watching Canada AM this morning and he performed a song. I thought, "hmmm, he's in town, I wonder if he's playing a show". Sure enough he was in town for a show...last night. DAMN! I've been waiting for him to come to town and I can't believe that I missed it!

Have you found out about any great shows that you've just been dying to see, after the fact?

Last week Joan Baez was in town. I looked at the local paper online and there was a picture of her onstage. Of course it was from the previous night. I was not pleased.

I missed seeing the Grateful Dead. And I was there!

I passed on seeing Elliot Smith, John Lee Hooker, and Desmond Dekker all within a year before they died, respectively. Hindsight. I also showed up late for a Vic Chestnutt opening set (for Jonathan Richman) and caught just a couple of great songs-- enough for me to resolve not to miss him again until his untimely passing made that impossible.

I waffled about whether to see Patti Smith at Minneapolis' legendary First Avenue nightclub and ultimately didn't go-- that ended up nearly being the last show there (the club unexpectedly closed for months as part of a legal entanglement but eventually reopened).

I found out about Spoon for the first time days after they played a tiny bar show here in support of Girls Can Tell. That would've been a good one.

My dad had tickets to Woodstock but didn't go so that he could pick up a few extra shifts at the bicycle shop where he was working at the time.

Man, you're bad karma!

My one big win was to see Ella Fitzgerald about two years before she passed away. It was a bit sad to see her have to be escorted on stage and forget the lyrics, but it was great to see the admiration of the audience for such a wonderful talent.

This sort of has a different twist. I was in the Navy in 1970 and stationed in Key West, Fla. I was coming home on leave and was flying on stand-by. My brother had tickets for us to see Led Zepplin at the Spectrum in Philly and was going to surprize me when I got home. Well I didn't get on the flight because it was full and didn't get home till the next day. I do have the ticket stub as sort of a reminder.

Dylan's in town tonight, but I made arrangements to have my kids tonight, so I'm not going. I've never seen him live and would like to before he stops touring.

I saw him once, but not by choice. Filed it under the heading" Been there, done that, no need to do it again".

Saw Hendrix at the same time, but never got a chance to see him again. The guys I know that are guitarists all feel that they missed seeing him the most out of the great rock guitar players.
