His first product is the affordably priced Momentum monobloc power amplifier, which will sells for a mere $42,000 a pair. It delivers 300W into 8ohms, 600W into 4ohms and 1.2kW into 2ohms...

It's a beaut and no doubt a true no-compromise piece of technology; (copper heatsinks with venturis?!). Of course, I wouldn't expect less for $42k.

BTW, I know were you can get an amp that aint' chopped liver either and only costs $500.

Hmmm... $42k for the power amp and $200 for the speakers. That should sound like... something

HA

I have recently realized / reconfirmed that having great speakers and a lesser amp is better than having a great amp and lesser speakers.

This amp should be coupled with some VR-9s at $180,000.00 a pair.

Yep, I'd love to pair those monoblocks with my 90's Technics speakers!!! Now that would be something special....

I notice you changed your stereo configuration in your signature.... So I assume the new Class D amp is a big improvement over the Monarchys....

On a much less expensive scale I was surprised by the improvement my Krell S 300i made with my speakers. From the $350 Ascend CBM's to the $1,000 Monitor Audio's and the Mobile Fidelity OML 1's the Krell took control. Having the current and damping controlling the woofers improves the sound. The previous integrated amps I have owned were not able to drive the speakers as well. If I had purchased more expensive speakers with a previous amp I am not sure if I would be as happy.

I was basing my comment on a current setup I have right now where I paired my Clearfields (von schweikert) with my Rotel 1050 and the sound is far better than expected and not too far behind My main setup with 10k worth of electronics and a pair of Dynaudio 82s.

The Clearfields are such killer speakers. I am so glad I never sold them like I originally tried to do. They are going back into the main system this weekend again.

Geez, I never thought of a connection. I just got tired of Nicholson's mug.

But I like the CDA a bit better than the Monarchy:

Even more transparent & airy
More accurate over-all sound of instrument timbres
More visceral bass -- more authentic presentation of, e.g., orchestral crescendos.Five hundred bucks including case & hardware ...

Rotel is known for their superior power supplies in their amps so I am not surprised it works well with your speakers.

At $42k he is competing with Boulder and top of the line Krell. It would be interesting to hear them. A friend of mine recently acquired a Boulder amp and will use an Esoteric source directly to the amp. I'm waiting to get a chance to check that baby out.

I'm with you JM on the amp/speaker emphasis. A mediocre amp will not drive good speakers to their potential. I've recently had the Mordaunt Short 902 hooked to my CJ system and although you can't expect them to compete with my Dyn's they were very good and if they were all I had the sound is satisfying. I was extremely impressed considering the 902's cost under $250.00. I've had other experiences as well that have me convinced it is better to have better electronics versus speakers, IF, one had to pick one or the other. Obviously, it's optimum to have both of close to equal competence.
