I don't know enough about Bozak speakers to comment. For the most part, they are all pretty damn good. When Rudy Bozak was ill and away from the company, things took a dive in quality. The highest regarded stuff was during his tenure as owner and engineer. Those look pretty darn nice though. I am partial to 2 way.

Apogees are one of the hardest loads to drive. Your amp however could probably handle them without issue. Target, my local shop, has had a pair of Centaur Minor for ages now...trade in. I have heard them but I have found i enjoy Martin Logan more. They are asking 750 for the Centaurs...

Hey is your amp close in sound to the RB 991? Target had one, but just sold it. I was planning to listen to it, so I would know what you are hearing. Too late. Are they even similar?

It was 200 wpc also. I bet it sounds alike. Chitty! I knew I should have moved quicker on that. Problem is that it was on the shelf, and I would have had to build a system for it, and then take it all down when I was done. I didn't have time for all of that. Oh well, I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Interesting to hear your reaction, Pops. I notice he had those a while back. The Centaur Minors are, of course, hybrids: a ribbon mid/tweeter that crosses to a 6.5".

A few years ago he had pair of full-range in the shop, either Duetta or Calipers, I'm not sure. I kick myself that I didn't give them a serious listen.

I had the 991 for a few years and really liked it. At the time i had no need for 200wpc but it was a steal brand new for the price i got it at. Had it paired with a Rotel RC-1070 preamp which I was disappointed with, the thing died less than a month after the warranty was up. The key with the 991 was to get the second series which had the removable power cord.

Interesting. How would you describe the phono stage of the 1070? frenchie has the 1090 which is well regarded, but I have never heard it. How would you describe the 991's voice?

poppa: "Apogees are one of the hardest loads to drive"

its a simple fix. adcom amps will do nicely. eons ago, AHC drove the 1 ohm apogee scintillas with an adcom 555. yes, they were ONE OHM!

i have yet to find a speaker that gives my 555II any trouble. and my friend used different combinations of the adcom amps (5802, 5500, and 5400) to drive his martin logan reQuests to wonderful sound using a counterpoint sa3000 preamp.

and the adcoms arent that costly, even at list price.

Wow, that's quite a nod for Adcom. Tommy, thekid just bought some Adcom gear, they are discussing it in his thread. 1 ohm huh? Never encountered any myself, but that doesn't mean much.

I am becoming curious about Adcom. Perhaps I should consider one of their amps. Oh Tommy, did you see this Luxman? You could drive 5 pairs of Apogee with it. I am so tempted...

Pops...I also have an Adcom amp. Not a bad amp at all. I have the 5400. While I like my Rotel better, they are not that far apart. I think the Rotel is more musical, while the Adcom seems to be more heavy down low and not as musical in my opinion. But you wont go wrong with either of these amps because that are not that apart. The Rotel seems to be a better fit in the two channel system. I have the Adcom driving my Paradigm Monitor 7's in my hometheaters front channels. When I get a new preamp replacing the Rotel preamp in the two channel, the Rotel preamp will go to make another system with the Adcom amp. But like I said, you wont go wrong with either of these amps and the differences are not a night and day difference at all.

I have ran adcom amps at 1ohm before and as long as you keep them cool they will run it all day long. I have run the bigger adcoms like the 555 and the 5500 and 5800 for subwoofer amps for custom home subs for home theater and they are current kings and as far a difficult to drive speakers they do a fine job with that as well. I guess ears are different to some degree because the way Frenchmon talks about how adcom sounds vs rotel is the way I feel in reverse when I compared them years ago. It is just an opinion and Frenchmon is right the different is so close it would take some serious listening to hear a difference. But I would put an adcom amp on about any speaker as far as I am concerned especially one that needs higher current and especially now for the price that one can get an adcom amp for on the used market. When I finally get my new speakers once I figure out which ones that I want and more power is needed my might even look at a bigger adcom because I do like their sound and the price is awesome.

i have both MMGs and spendor s3/5s (sensitivity=84db!). the spendors would seem unsatisfying but the muscle supplied by a big amp like my 555II (and fo tien's aragon 400wpc monoblocks) makes the difference.

the adcom 5500 and 5400 are both very muscular for even their rated power.

i won't sing the praises to their preamps however as i was dumbfounded at the difference between the gfp565 and my arc sp3a1(c). the stereophile review of the 565 was wrong. its good, and it sufficed but the arc made me realize why it pays to snag a component like an arc now and again, even if it proves to be costly.
