When looking at Jeff's movies I realize I haven't seen many modern ones. Most of my favorites were from the 80's and some how I keep missing the Big Lebowski. So I'm pretty much disqualified. But from what I've seen......

Fabulous Baker Boys
Nadine
Tucker
Starman
Thunderbolt & Lightfoot

Ok, lets discuss. How can Dude afford rent and drug he is smoking if he is unemployed?

I like Big Lebowski. It kind of grow on you. Just wished John Turturro had more scenes in that movie, and less scene Dude dancing.

The other Bridges favorite:

Lolly-Madonna XXX (1973)
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974)
Kiss Me Goodbye (1982)
K-PAX (2001)

First, re: The Big Lebowski: The Dude just scrapes by....Remember the scene with the nervous landlord, Marty? Went sorta like:

Marty: "Hey, I just wanted to remind you..."
Lebowski: (Gives him a blank look) "Oh, yeah, the rent, right?"
Marty: (Awkwardly) "Yeah....If you could just....You know, under the door. It was due last week...."
Lebowski: "Sure, no problem."
Marty: (Relieved) "Thanks. Say, you coming to my performance?"
Lebowski: (Sipping drink) "Wouldn't miss it."

The Dude abides.

One movie that hasn't come up is The Fisher King (Terry Gilliam, dir.), a role that completely engrossed me and brought my attention to Bridges as a serious actor. While Starman was a charming movie and a good role for Bridges, his role as the fallen and disgraced radio shock-jock Jack really exemplifies the range of his talent. His portrayal of a man, completely enervated by his mistakes and undone by his shame is simply appalling and awe-inspiring. With Robin Williams at his side, playing a psychotic tramp, you would think Bridges would be upstaged and eviscerated. Not so. Bridges handles the role with confidence and poise, making his role less caricature than character....

I gotta be the only one I know who hasn't seen this yet. I just got to make time, that's all.

Both Bridges brothers turned out some great work, but I have to give the nod to Jeff.

See it brudda man....It's kinda rough and tumble, but a great show all in all....

1. The Big Lebowski (and just to set things clear, the movie is not about bowling, not about a kidnapping, it's clearly a movie simply about the penis).

2. Starman (he's an alien)

3. K-Pax (he meets an alien)

4. The Last Picture Show

5. Heaven's Gate (most underrated film of all time)

The Big Lebowski fo sho. I agree with Smokey, Lebowski needs more Jesus.

I have to agree with PS (except for the penis comment re Lebowski, unless of course he makes a convincing argument for the penis), Bridges was good in The Last Picture Show which is a great movie all the way around.

I enjoyed The Amatures too. (Given the plot, could this be about the penis as well?)

Still haven't seen Crazy Heart.

First there is the suggestive title of the film, which puts into motion the entire films fascination with male genitalia and the constant references to castration.

Numerous quotes in the movie such as "his d*ck, or his rod or his johnson" from Maude, several other lines about "we're gonna cut your d*ck off Larry".

The Dude has a fear or losing his manhood, he makes reference to that several times, of course he also drops his roach-clipped joint into his lap while driving. The Nihilist threaten with castration, and Walter also comments on that fact.

The dream sequences show The Dude with giant scissors running after him eluding to the idea of castration as well.

Then we have other characters like Jackie Treehorn and the porn industry, we have Maude luring The Dude in order to conceive with him, the line that Bunny Lebowski says to the Dude about "sucking his d*ck for $1,000". Jackie Treehorn also draws a giant penis on the tablet when he meets with The Dude.

Do I really need to go on? It's pretty obvious when you actually look at the film for what it is.

Most people who are familiar with the Coen Bros. know their ability to weave multiple layers in their film and have several religious ties (O'Brother Where Art Thou) is another example.

Also, notice how The Dude essential repeats everything that he hears at a later point in the film, i.e. he hears George Bush say "this aggression will not stand" and then later uses that line, there are many more we well (parlance of our times, etc).

The Dude certainly teetered on the edge of losing his manhood including by ferret attack if I recall correctly. I just hope I don't fixate on "the penis" the next time I watch it.

Not to mention a very phallic bowling pin sliding between two very round bowling balls.....

Thanks for making a perfectly enjoyable movie a surreal exploration of man's consideration of his sex. I just never really put it together until now.

All the more reason to stock up on the tarragon for the next viewing....

3. K-Pax (Jeff meets an alien)

You really don't know that. There was alot of hint that Spacy might be an alien, but also there was alot of hint that he may not. And the ending did not resolve that question.

And welcome back :)

True, we never really know, but that's what made the film so intriguing was the fact that half-way through the film it made the side-story about how he could just be a mental person who has convinced himself that he is from elsewhere, but there is enough evidence as well to make a valid argument that he was from K-Pax, especially the scene in the planitarium.

Hardly. Marijuana is only one facet of the Dude character, not that important to the overall theme or themes, no different than the Dudes love for White Russians. The Coen Bros. are geniuses when it comes to complex layers of their films that go much deeper and far richer than most people care to explore, but they also use a surface story to keep people less inclined interested as well, as if the movie was about bowling....ha. We never even see the Dude bowl ONCE, not once. In fact the only person in the film we see bowl from their little group is Donny, who rolls a strike each time until right before he dies when he leaves a pin up. Foreshadowing at it's best.

Peru, we went round on this whole penis thing a long time ago. Must you keep bringing it up? Saying it's specifically about the Dude's penis would be like saying Star Wars is about penises because so many of the vehicles are phallic shaped and Darth Vader acts like a dick.

The penis thing in Lebowski is incidental. Phallic imagery is commonplace everywhere. The Coens use the repeated penile motif as a comic element. Yes, all your references are there, but it is NOT what the movie is about.

This one is my favorite: http://toddalcott.livejournal.com/19382.html

No one talks about the movie being about anyone's penis. Only YOU, Mr. Peru, seem to have this penile obsession regarding this movie.

The Big Lebowski is a mashup of many genres, but ultimately, it's a film noir homage. Even the title is a reference to to another quadruple-cross mystery where no one is who they appear to be, The Big Sleep.

It's not about cock.

Good. Because this board...

Desparately...

needs it's members, past and present, to breath life back into it. It's been pure agony everytime I stop in here and see the vast wasteland that it has become. (Except for bug-eyes posts)

Soon, maybe tomorrow, I'll drop my favorite Jeff Bridges movie picks in here.

Hint: "Sea Hunt" tops the list.

Rich, I couldn't agree with you more, however there are many reasons why this place has become the wasteland that you refer to it as. While it's obvious that a gathering of all walks of life and opinions from around the world will no doubt cause for debate or arguments, that is the perfect breeding ground for both positive and negative results. I don't claim to like all the people I meet in the world and I am sure not all of them like me either, which is just fine, but this is meant to be a gathering of people to openly express how they feel about all things regarding audio/video, and then a few other areas as well, but unfortunately certain members here think that they are the only ones allowed to have an opinion and anyone who steps out of line, they are the first to call upon the pack of dogs to rid them from ever wanting to come back.

This place can be a ton of fun when it wants to be, even when people are in disagreement or going back and forth, but there are certain extremes of that and more importantly there are people who would rather exterminate the people they dislike here from being a part of this forum and that elitist mindset needs to stop. It would certainly be a boring place if we all got along as well, that's not what I would want either, I think it's good to have differences of opinion, but when people are true, genuine and open about who they really are, it makes for a great community of online enthusiasts.

To some degree there almost always needs to be a target for the "elders" here to enjoy ganging up on and making them feel better about themselves, it's almost like if there isn't someone to attack, then they have little to say around here, notice how quiet it gets when there isn't controversy over something.

Anyway, I am going to hang around again and see what has been happening lately and so far it looks like very little has changed around here. Sadly.

I fully accept my own faults and failures in life, I recognize my mistakes that I have made. I know that I have said or done things in the past around here that was either out of line or in poor taste, but at least I have the guts to admit that and desire to become a better person in life, rather than keep an arrogant mindset and the fingers pointed outwards. I am a raw, passionate person and sometimes I can't help but express myself in aggressive terms, especially when it's something that I feel strongly about, or when I feel attacked.

That is all.

Nope, still alive and doing well. Had a chance to upgrade a little over the past few years, but really spent more time in the world of auto, instead of audio. I am looking at possibly restoring a 1969 Maserati.
