View Full Version : The MMF-5 is back in action

For those who don't know...which I suppose might be everyone here except MC Chubby, my MMF-5 motor would eventually get hot after extended sessions and would whine. I thought perhaps it was something that could be resolved with oil or grease, but that never worked. Chubbs even sent me a penetrating lubricant to try, but no luck. So I call Roy Hall and ordered a new motor. Here's a photo essay of how I spent the morning...

Wonderful audio porn....do me a favor and measure the base of the hole where the arm screws into the base from left to right. If its the same as the base on mine, I can use an arm like the one on your MMF 5. The guy at Music Hall told me I would have to drill, but my table has a base like yours. On most of the MMF 2.1's that I saw the arm just sits on top of the base.

Absolutely...there were very good instructions. Too bad they were written in Czech :)
Kidding aside...no instructions, printed materials or accessories of any kind were included. The original work was covered up in solder globs the size of English peas. I didn't know until I got them desoldered whether there was a big loop, a small hole or even no hole on those tabs. There's certainly no wow/flutter differences...it's a really simple motor. To hold steady speed I think you just need a heavy platter - and 3 or 4 pounds of glass gets it done.

At the edge where the tonearm base drops into the deck it's a diameter of 70 mm.

I'd guess it must have taken about an hour. The hard part was the removal...especially the solder. That took twice as long as installing the motor. The solder was huge and I had trouble getting it wicked up.
That platter is indeed original. That's the one thing I like better about the 5 than the 5.1. Of course, with the 5.1 they upgraded the arm and changed from a 120V motor to a 16V motor (which allows use of the Speed Box), so the 5.1 definitely has its advantages.

Sometimes progress moves forward and they forget one of the really class features. I've seen some nice aluminum, acrylic and delrin platters. But yours is something else. Any recommendations on a nice mat for the platter? The thin felt one that came with the table always wants to stay on the back of the record when I go to flip it over. Thanks, Jack

I have found that my cleaning process seems to discharge the records, so I stay with the felt. When the mat sticks to one, I wet-clean it and vacuum it. That seems to solve the problem indefinitely for that record. If you like the felt style and continue to have static issues, you could get a carbon fiber mat at a place like this...
http://www.sleevetown.com/turntable-accessories.shtml
If you want something that affects the sound, presumably as an upgrade, you could try a Herbie's mat.
http://herbiesaudiolab.net/ttmat.htm
PS: As a crazy but cheap idea, I once cut a hole in the center of a Bounce dryer sheet and put it under the mat. I don't get enough static to really test how well that works, but it seems like a decent concept...however wacky it is. I didn't get any significant static afterward, but I didn't get much before...so who knows.

I couldn't justify having the Marantz 6300 with the MMF-5 sitting right there. It was only a matter of time. I should probably lie about this so no Marantz fans get teary-eyed :cryin: but I parted out the 6300 on eBay. It had cosmetic problems and minor functional problems. I bought it for something like $74 (an auction with problems disclosed), got a few years use out it, and made probably $300 selling parts.

Thanks for the kudos!
Actually, there are three Goldrings in this thread. I'm a loyal Goldring fan. The last one is a 1042 (moving magnet), currently mounted on the P5. There's also an Eroica (moving coil), which was at one time mounted on the MMF-5. Early in the thread you'll see the 2200 (moving magnet) currently on the MMF-5. Given that I found what I like, my Goldring cartridges get all the playing time. They track well, have nice midrange and on the P5 have great authoritative bass...a little softer on the MMF-5.
The motor installation wasn't too bad. Other than spending well over half the time trying to remove old solder, it was actually fairly easy. I probably used less than a quarter as much solder as they did.

Here's the Red. It has come a long way sense I first got it. I'm sure I have over a humdred hours on it. I wont bore you with audiophile talk. Just know the sibilance has gone, its clear, transparent, is a tad little recessed in mids but never the less its warmer than the OM10. Not as warm as my Elan, but the entry level Elan is not as detailed as the Red. Its a good cart. I would love to hear a 2M Blue...and more upscale Goldring.

I really like this table. It really does a good job for a person getting back into vinyl after being away for 20+ years. No matter how much I like it, it can only produce to its limits. When first introduced a few years back , it was said that it was an entry level audiophile table. And because it is, then its limited in its arm as well. So I know that it only gets better as I continue to go up in quality from here. But as is, this is a fine table at that.

To me, Canton speakers are a well kept secret in American audiophile circles. They are extreemly well known and loved over seas. They have very good imaging with a great mid-range and a lively tweeter. They have a decent bottom end as well. They are 14.2" tall 7.5 wide and 10.6 deep. The Frequency response is 38...30.000 Hz, the power handling is140 watts and they are 89 db. They have a silk dome tweeter and aluminum mid woofer and real wood veneer...no vinyl wrap. These speakers have a great dispersion of music and they are not boring at all. These are great speakers and I plain on upgrading to the Ergo series. I forgot to add...if you want a speaker to give you emotion and feeling from your music...Canton is one of those speakers that can.

This is my preamp. Its a pretty good one at that. It has a very nice phono stag as well. It does everything well. At $1200 dollars it better at lease be decent. But last week it really got exposed for what it is...very good mid fi. After listening to a Audio Research LS 15 tubed preamp I felt I really need an upgrade. But until then this is still a good preamp...not bright but not warm...no cutting edge in music at all.

This is my baby. This thing is like really good. It comes in two pieces....the right side is the transport and DAC and the left side is the power supply. And there is a third piece that I am waiting for...a tubed DAC. that is said to take it over the top and on par with Musical Fidelity's KW series tube DAC and CDP outfit. The X DAC is hard to come across as people are not letting them go. The three pieces when in production together cost $3K and the DAC costing $1500 by its self.

Frenchmon, the old Systemdek tables had glass platters also. They had beautiful wood plinths. I posted one for you to look at when you were first deciding. You can get them for a great price nowadays, usually with a decent arm/cart already installed.
The EICO is one of my finest acquisitions. Bought from an eccentric DIY'er for a song. You indeed need to hear what a rectifier can do for a circuit.
Keep in mind, one of the Yahoo EICO Group mods lives in the same city as me. If you bought an EICO, or any similar vintage American tube pre, he could fix it up for you. I could get you a deal for sure.
Here's his site, look under HF-85 to see what he has done with my model.

So if its a tubed preamp...and the Golden tube is an amp...are they paired together? IF so, do you have to much of a warm sound going on? if not what do you have each mated with? Is it a hybrid system? How have you got your system set up?
poppachubby
06-17-2010, 05:11 PM
Yes the EICO and the SE40 are together. Not hybrid at all. Of course the overall sound is "warm", but the EICO added fidelity more than anything else. The high frequencies come screaming out of my speakers, and bass can thump and bump.
I know you have heard good tube systems, so you know what I'm talking about. There are some people who think that any amount of tubes in the chain, means the sound becomes a warm pile of mush. The reality is, combined with the rectifier the fidelity is through the roof. Better than any component i have owned. Academic elements like imaging and staging, are bolstered to detailed and exciting levels, while the feel and sound of the music is natural and compelling.
I had a Kenwood Basic C1 with the SE40. The jump in SQ once I added the EICO was phenomenal.
Aside from that, my sig lists my Reference chain.

You can never have to much solid state if you got the right solid state. My solid is not piercing at all. Cable and speaker wire has something to do with it as well as speakers with emotion. The worst thing you can do is get a sterile pair of speakers...ahhh I hate sterile and cold speakers...they tend not to have any life if you ask me. Dont think tubes is the only way to introduce sweetness with a little warmth into your system. I know you heard that Reference Marantz at that audio show....that was solid state. And im sure they didnt have it set up to where they got the max out of the gear....Reference Marantz is not edgy at all for solid state. With the right cable and speaker wire and CDP the Marantz can be just as warm as tubes.
Hey...this solid will move you....I garuntee!

Hmmmm, I think you should stick with the Goldring. The Rega is still new to you, whereas the Goldring has been sought after for some time. Down the road, once the Rega starts to sound bland, spice it up with the subplatter.

Looks good! How does the sub-plater add to more fidelity? Is it because of the mass?

For one thing, it improves the accuracy. I timed it for 3 minutes and it spun a dead-on 100 turns. Also, it spins smoother. The sound is just a bit clearer...sounds a little more detailed. It's a subtle difference, but I'm happy with it.

Yes...they're mine. The Focal speakers are on the Marantz receiver. The ProAc are on the Audio Research amp.
ProAc seem to be most famous for their Response 1SC, which is a little 2-way that has been replaced by a model (Response D1) that is not quite as highly regarded. It uses different drivers than the 1SC. In these floorstanders, called the Response Tri-Tower, the top two drivers are reportedly the same as the 1SC and are in their own chamber. Below that are three small woofers. There's a port in the bottom. I got these from an Audiogon seller and have been very happy with them. They can sometimes sound just a tad light on the bass, but I knew that going in.

Although I haven't spent any time with a Speed Box, I like the concept of the machined subplatter better. The reason for that is that the molded phenolic subplatter is supposedly often out-of-round and of inaccurate diameter. The machined subplatter would presumably solve that. What the Speed Box can do is apparently continuously check and correct the motor speed. However, that would correct only the pulley speed, not anything that happens after that. If the subplatter is truly inaccurate, wow would remain.
I printed out a strobe disc at the Vinyl Engine site and tried it out on the Rega. Not only does the record turn the right number of times over an extended period of time, the bars on the strobe disc never waver. My gut tells me the machined subplatter is the best upgrade you can put on one of these turntables, other than a tonearm.

Do they make a after market sub platter for pro-ject? I also printed out a strobe disc at VE Can I use a flash light or do I need some sort of florescent light?

The shop that makes the Deep Groove subplatters sold at Musicdirect also used to make one for the mmf-5...don't know if that's still the case. If so, I would guess it must also fit some Pro-Ject models.
The strobe disc relies on your light being 60 Hz, which is the frequency of your power service. You just need a light that plugs in the wall. A flashlight wouldn't work since it's DC power.

OK...those last few were a bit gratuitous. Just getting in a little quality time with Ray Brown Trio and the Marantz.
So terribly glad to see this thread.
My motor, on my MMF 5.1, after about 250 hours of use, started to make a horrible noise.
(Actually, it was doing it after 20 hours of use IF I used the clamp, but that's another story and I stopped using it.)
Roy says it's time to replace the motor. Seeing these photos let's me know just what I am getting into.
Not plug and play, but an afternoon project.

I dunno. A part of me (magic not science?) thinks the clamp is what messed up the motor in the first place!

That's what I'm thinking, too. It's just the memory of the first time I noticed the motor noise was when using the clamp. And then I took the clamp off, and the noise went away.
It's a classic "post hoc ergo propter hoc" foolish conclusion. It was probably co-incidence.
Unless there is some ADDITIONAL mechanical weirdness going on, it doesn't seem logistically possible for the two to interact.
