Any opinions on the Marantz 1060?
Worth swapping my Pioneer SX-650 for?

It is worth doing it. The Marantz goes for a lot more than the Pioneer and I guess it will sound better.

The Marantz 1060 has a very nice warm sound, it was my first Amp way back when.
I currently have a Marantz 2230 which is a receiver with the same power amp section as the 1060. Traded my original 1060 in years ago. i am listening to a 2235B here in my office, it too is a nice receiver but a little different sound than the 2230.

I have 2230 and 2250B and the 2250B sounds a little bit better and I have no idea why.

As a general rule most people do not have high opinions of the Pioneer SX below the 750 so I'd give a slight edge to the Marantz even though most people prefer the 22XX series from that time period.
Power wise they are about the same with the Pioneer at 35 wpc and the Marantz at 30 wpc so there should not be an issue there if you plan on using the Marantz to drive the same speakers as the Pioneer.
Here is a link to the 1060 in case you were not aware of some of the specs.

Eno, if you are thinking of dumping the SX, why not consider refurbing the tube amp to fill it's place?!? Seem's like a perfect opportunity.

Thanks for that advice guys, that one slipped through my fingers, as well as Marantz 2238 for $100.00!!!!! What is the step up from the SX-650 to the 850, besides watts? Is it really that much of a difference?
Poppa, I did a lot of research and tinkering with the tubed Pioneer and the electronics were just too shaky and it would require money that I would rather invest in a modern tube piece. I donated it to the Brooks Berdan future audio museum, the owner and I did a once over. Besides it get's way too hot and I had no safe place to put it. Heard any decent preamps for $300? Love to incorporate my cd player into the equation. How's that Creek? What is it's sound characteristics?
Anyone a PS Audio or Cambridge preamp fan?

The Creek is strictly a phono stage. It's the best I have owned. Neutral, open and airy. Really stays out of the way and lets the cart do it's thing. I use my Eico as a control pre.
Have you considered an Adcom GTP or Kenwood Basic? Can be found for cheap and are well regarded particularily by vinyl types.

No, I have not heard of those, I will check them out. Some guy offered to sell me either a: Rotel RX-550, Yamaha CS-630 or a Rotel RC-9808 preamp, heard of those?

I thought about suggesting the Adcom GFP-555 or 565, earlier. They're very nice and readily available on the used market. If you find yourself interest in Yamaha, you might want to look into the C-4 or similar...

+1
The Yammy C4 or Kenwood Basic C1 or C2 can be had for cheap. They are very direct with not alot of junk in the circuits.

No I haven't. Some Rotel are great and some are duds, buyer beware.

I have amassed the following from garage sales:
Pioneer SX-650
Pioneer SX-737
Marantz 1150
The Marantz is the best of the bunch.
