I listened the Jeff Beck last week on the Exclusive First Listen Page (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=98679384). Maybe I'm not enough of a guitar head. I found it souless and a bit of a yawner. No emotion or commotion as far as I could tell; good for shopping at Macy's.

On the other hand, I thought the first listen for Nels Cline "Intitiate" (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=125423842) pretty good and far far more interesting as far as guitaring goes. A bit of a smoosh between John Scofield and Bil Frisell, perhaps.

And there's a Philly band Dr. Dog (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=125140661) (I'd never heard of them) that is up for one more day and definitely deserves a listen in the alt-pop category.

noddinOff" that bit of a yawner" Macy's" Thingy is funny.... ha ha

I'm not even a rocker!! so it wasn't even the Guitar effort" that got my attention, it was His Adventurous style, as someone coming from the 60s The Yard-birds it got my thoughts" remembering Peter Gabriel,Mark Knopfler, as rocker's who always and never afraid to try new stuff... for the love of music. Beck is a remarkable guitar player and has a deep catalog going back 40+ years. I caught him live recently on an HD channel (Palladium I think?) and, while he did some neat stuff, I found it to be pretty boring. There was a time when I appreciated guitar 'gods' like him, Pat Metheny and Eric Johnson, but that was a long time ago and now they just leave me cold.

I'm feared that its same with me as it is with Swish - few and far between are the times I find guitarists' solo efforts engaging for an entire album. They're interchangeble to me. I still like to whip out some older Beck every now and then. Love me some Dixie Dregs too. All of the aforementioned guitar giants in this thread have made songs I'd like to hear every so often, just not all in one sitting. I'm more a fan of ideas and songcraft than I am of technique.
