Rediscovering comps you had forgotten about

I'm mainly referrring to comps you've put together yourself with this thread although someone else's comp is fair game, too. Anyway, I pulled out this comp yesterday with a 5/03 date on it called "Wednesday Mix" and popped into the car player on random mode, not remembering a thing that was on it (I'm notorious for no tracklists) and was thoroughly entertained and surprised by the eclecticity of this particular set of tunes, which took me back to the fruitful days of AOR FM. Just about every tune hit me in the right frame of mind and they even flowed well on random. Here's the tracklist:

While this mix isn't exactly representative of the stuff most of you here listen to, the point of this is to ask you if you guys occasionally do this: run across a mix comp you haven't played in a long time that kind of got lost in the shuffle, and you find yourself totally getting into almost every track and the comp has a fresh feel to it? Ahh, the magic of old mixes!

Damn good songs from when I listened to radio. FM was actually pretty good back then. Not that it was great or anything. Certainly better then than now.

Anybody remember these tunes? Or should I say, any fond memories of these tunes.

Edit: The dates don't jive on some of these tunes. Apparantly, I dubbed this from two different cassettes. I used a cassette from 1992 also. So sue me.

I recently came accross a a box of cassette tapes (mostly self made mixes) that was languishing on a lower shelf of an entertainment center. I'm wondering what the hell to do with these things. I'm down to one functional cassette deck in the house now, and it gets little use. I should probably copy then to cdr, but I doubt I ever will....I threw a few out, but don't have the heart to toss the rest. :(

One, which I pulled out and played, is called Sunday Morning Brunch (can you guess what I made it for?), a collection of mellower pop tunes. I don't have the tracklist, but I did really enjoy hearing it again.

I have a couple hundred cassettes languishing in those specially made brief case looking things used to store them. All kinds of music. All store bought at one time or another.

I never use my cassette decks and I have two very good decks. One of 'em is a Nakamichi CR-5A. It's literally been years since I played any of them. I doubt if they're still even good. Isn't there a shelf life on those magnetic tapes? I know VHS tapes diminish over time.

I wonder if there's a market for used cassettes. :p

I would have thought they were too "Indie" for you.. actually it took me a while to warm up to them..I thought they were Built to Spill Lite.. the singer is a bit of an aquired taste, not as immediately likeable as Doug Martsch. They do make some interesting music along the way though..

Spring '02 is a good'n.. I'll have to give it a spin this week.

I've made so many comps now, it's almost all I ever listen to anymore. A couple days ago, I pulled out one I made for my wife 2 years ago, a JC Mellencomp. Now, I'm not a huge fan of his, but I have to say this one was sounding quite good. I almost forgot I had it.

There was another one I made last year that I only played a few times and forgot about, called "Beneath a Lavender Moon." Sort of a somber-yet-beautiful thing. Anyway, I played that one Sunday night...and when the mood is right, it's a minor masterpiece...

Sure, I like some indie stuff. Why not? I'm not a fan of the "indie scene" or the whole "emo ethos" etc., but I won't let that stop me from enjoying a song. Just don't expect me to not brush the hair out of my eyes as I stare at my fish heads.

Those are good DCFC songs with interesting lyrics and solid melodies.

Yeah, it is fun to pull out an old one that you haven't heard for a long time. I just recently listened to one of my first comps which was an African Mix and it sounded pretty cool. Probably been well over a year since I'd listened to it last. But I do tend to only listen to the recent ones, and usually only near the time I make them. Usually by the time I finish one, I'm starting to get sick of it so it's good to give them some extended time off. Never tried the random play thing, though. Would almost seem a crime after spending all that time fretting over the sequencing. Guess spontaneity has its benefits too :)

Robert Fripp "North Star" - I'm not sure who sings on this, but this is the twin brother of the song "Matte Kudesai" from DISCIPLINE. I haven't looked it up yet so I have no idea where this song is from.

Red House Painters "Have You Forgotten" - different version than the one on "Songs for A Blue Guitar" - it's not even mentioned on Mark Kozelik's website.. but I discovered it's from the VANILLA SKY soundtrack. Lots of other GREAT songs on there by Radiohead and Sigur Ros.. have to pick that one up. This version is slower, I think I like it better maybe.. not sure. Gives a different feel to the song definately.

Flogging Molly "Another Bag of Bricks" WHOA!! this one is the shocker.. sounds like the Pogues reincarnated.. the singer does a dead on Shane MacGowan.. but wait.. turns out.. it's none other than Dave King formerly of the 80's metal band Fastway!! Whoa!! What a change of pace.. I love it.. got to track down some of their stuff.

I made a Fleetwood Mac comp, but found that I couldn't listen to it the whole way through. The only stuff that seemed to peak my interst was the Buckingham stuff, so I made a comp using stuff from his Mac days as well as his three solo albums, even a couple of tunes from his <i>Buckingham Nicks</i> album, which provided by another board memeber (DLD). I have to say its one of favorite comps.
