Daks

I agree based on my limited listening experience.
I just hooked them up to a Kenwood KR-7400 that I just picked up on the way home from the dentist.
It has been a very good week......... :D

I am actually up $3 based on what I have sold vs. purchased which makes the wife happy.

I found a pair of these speakers in the trash yesterday. They look to be in perfect shape. Haven't taken them apart yet or hooked them up. Still have the labels on the back that say 8" woofer, 3 " tweeter. 15 watts. Model AS-2. Thinking they might work nice with my backyard theater system as the fronts.

Not much info on the web about these. I like the feel and look of them and they have some weight behind them. This would be my first decent find if they turn out to be any good.

Started working on garbage find, New front cloth and some pioneer tweeters, sound is better, but I think I'm going to look for new woofers. Cabinets are just to nice to leave as is. I also added some spring clips on the back and the Pioneer crossover. Need to do a little more cleaning of the box and some wood oil should make them look almost new.

Looks like they will clean up pretty nicely. The big thing about driver replacement is to find new drivers with Thiel-Small parameters close to the old ones; that way you won't have to worry about cabinet or crossover modifications. It will be less critical if the cabinets are sealed rather than vented.

Determining the Thiel-Small parms isn't necessarily easy. It's probably best if you can measure the old (but still working) driver. Next best is if you know what they are from original specs. Otherwise if you know at least the nominal impedance of the old driver, (e.g. it's stencilled on the back of the cabinet), you can use formulae or software programs to work backwards from new driver parms to the existing cabinet.

I haven't used it myself, but Parts Express makes a relatively inexpensive, computer-based tool that measures speaker parameters: check it out HERE (http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=390-806).

I have some old Realistics about the size of the Utahs that needed re-foaming. Rather than re-foam I dropped these 8 inch full rangers in and WOW! I'd be willing to bet these GRS drivers will sound great and they're cheaper than a re-foam kit.

I found some Norman Lab Model 8s in a thrift shop today for $16/pair. These clearly are of 70's vintage and what made me buy them are the drivers. They are what appears to be an 8" fabric treated paper woofer with rubber surrounds and a 1" polycarbonate dome tweeter. Pretty esoteric stuff for their vintage. They sound really nice and smooth with good, airy top end extension, and tight bass, as you would expect from a sealed system. As you can see, they're ugly as hell with the grills off, but hey, they're in my garage so who cares? Currently I'm running them with a Pioneer Elite A-35R integrated amp with an old PC serving lossless files via foobar2000 as the primary source.

Nice garage system Sloshy...veddy nice indeed. I'd imagine that on occasion you make up some reason to exit the house?

I ran into one of those beautiful Hemi contraptions the other day at an auction...some folks from a place called Hennessey had gotten a hold of it and, lo and behold, a spritely 800 horses were the result. A bit too much car for me...:biggrin5:

I went out for a 1/2 gallon of milk today and was gone for 3 hours. :) I got some nice, hilly, twisty back country roads near me that are usually very sparsely used during weekday work hours (I always have Fridays off).

My cheaply cobbled together garage system sounds better than any system had up until my mid-20. I also have a vintage Superscope (aka Marantz) quad receiver that I can swap if I want (the Elite has better bass, the Superscope has better everything else). Makes changing the oil and washing the cars much less of a chore when you got good sounding tunes to carry you along.

I have to make due with a mere 376 horsepower.... for now!

My father had a '97 Cobra, but ended up trading it in a few years later when he decided he needed something with four wheel drive. The Challenger is a weekend toy, but I may buy a Mustang GT when my current daily driver wears out. I still got another year's worth of payments to go on the Challenger so I'll wait until then so I don't have two car payments at once (been there, don't want to tie up that much of my monthly budget on cars).

Okay, back to your regularly scheduled topic...

Closest I ever came to a Challenger was that I was one for 3 years back in the 70's.
My Little League team was sponsored by the local Dodge dealership and team name was the Challengers. He bought us all cool little T-shirts that had a picture of a Challenger on the front. I suspect that would be worth a few bucks now if I still had it..... :D

I'm not sure if I should start a new thread for this or not, so I'll just continue this one and hope it's okay. I have a couple of pieces of sound equipment that my parents purchased back in 1981 and then gave to me when they recently moved into a smaller home - a Tandberg TD20A SE tape deck and a pair of McIntosh R14 speakers. The tape deck was used infrequently and has been in home storage for the past twelve years or so. The speakers have also been in storage - they were used a lot more but as far as I know worked well when they were last used. I am interested in selling both but am not sure what a fair price would be for either one - there seems to be a pretty wide range. If anyone could direct me to a website where I might be able to find the value of these units I would appreciate it very much. I also have pictures (not sure how to post them, but I'll try) if that would help.

Wish I could see the pics, but ever since the new format, I can't. I also have change the "view" (on the top left) zoom from 100% to 90% otherwise the ads on the right cover the 10% of the right side of what is written on the forum. It's the only forum I have this problem with.

If I am on AR through Google Chrome I can see and post my pics.
However if I go on through AOL I cannot post or see my pics though I can see others.
Not sure if the Google Chrome solution will work for you.

Don't know why the IP you use to get on to AR is an issue when it comes to pics but probably another reason the traffic here has slowed to a crawl compared to that "other" site.

Thanks for the tip kid, I may try Google Chrome. I use IE(Internet Explorer)8, which I never had problems with before, just the past year or so seeing pics, but only here. I did try IE9, a while back but found I liked the older version better. Maybe because it was vintage:smilewinkgrin:

Found a pretty rare pair of speakers today.
Those of you who are familiar with EPI or Genesis speakers know the name Winslow Burhoe.
These are the TOTL speakers from a company he founded after leaving EPI.

These do not have the original woofers but they still sound very very good!

Hello, just picked up 4 mini advents at the Salvation Army for $18. 2 need new gaskets, but the cabinets and cloths are in good shape. Here is my question....What do you think about using them as fronts and rears in a surround sound system? Would the fact that they are not magnetically sheilded be a problem? I'm trying to put together an inexpensive surround sound system for my son. Thanks!

Magnetic shielding is not required for LED/LCD/Plasma screen flat panel tV's. Only the old school CRT TV's were affected.

Found a rather rare pair of US made speakers. This company has been around the mid 60's and according to their website their primary market has been Europe were they supposedly have a very good following. Based on limited listening of them (David Sanborn-Dire Straits-Pink Floyd and Neil Young) I can certainly see why. I know these are below his normal price point but if he sees this post perhaps Flo can confirm what their reputation is in Europe.

Also pictured here is a Denon DCM-420. This is the second one of these I have picked up this month. A very good piece and the second one I grabbed still had the remote.

I forgot I have to post pics when I am on here through Google.

Here is a link to the company's website.
I sent the company a request for info and have already got a couple of e-mails back.
Seems the company is now run by the founder's son.
He is member over on AK where I found some threads which indicate these are highly regarded.

I will be interested in your thoughts running with tubes.

When I had my Klipsch Heresys I thought the tube amp I had added a little more to the lower end.
Heresys tended to be little light on the lower end and my guess is that if your 3.5's are similar to my KG 4's they cover the lower end pretty well.

After a day of listening using my Dynaco SCA-35 I would say these got the bass better than my other speakers. They don't even need to be pushed much to get the low end.

Compared to the Polks r50 that I got, the Klipsch got better low end however the polks are better in the mids and highs!

Congrats again Daks!
It is interesting that despite the 3-drivers in those that they are considered only 2-way's.
A very versatile speaker that works well for Music and HT. Not as detailed I think as the Heresy's I had but a definite improvement over the Heresy on the low end.

Charlie - I don't stake them out but I have about 6-7 different thrifts within 20 minutes of me that I am able to visit regularly. Last weekend I scored a Sony ES receiver and an Tascam Tape/CD player-recorder for the princely sum of $ 25......... :D

CL in my area has also been a huge supplier of gear. My KG 4's were incorrectly listed by the seller as "Kilpsch FB" speakers and they only wanted $75. :D

It is amazing that in these days of instant information many people do not research what they have. But then again I have found some bargains on CL where the seller did know what they had but just priced it to sell so they could get rid of it quickly.

Nice pick-up!

I don't think I have seen a KR series receiver with that color face plate. Is it possibly a Euro version?

I have a KR-7400 running with my Martin Gamma 208's and it is a great combo. The older KR's are an under rated series IMO that don't get the same attention as Marantz, Sansui and other receivers of that era.

What are your thoughts of your piece?

dakatabg
12-01-2012, 08:47 AM
It is the European version, the US version is KR-4070, they are made exactly the same just the 220V and 110V switch on the back and the beige front face! Thats all!

Regarding the sound, I was impressed, it sounded really good, I ended up selling it to a guy at AK for parts since it started blowing the fuses!

Mr Peabody
12-01-2012, 09:51 AM
The 4070 was from around 1990 give or take, it's not what I'd call vintage, nor is it a quality receiver in the likes of true vintage Marantz or Sansui, in fact, it was Kenwoods's entry level 40 watt receiver. Some of the Kenwood gear made for the Japanese market is pretty cool though. I have an integrated amp from around the same era, it's a smaller than normal size physically and has a 1/4" input on the front for microphone or other fun stuff with a level control to blend it into whatever you are listening to, so it could be used for karaoke. My daughter is currently using it to plug in an electric drum. I've had it for about 20 years, it's still doing it's thing and I hang on to it just for the feature on the front.

Thanks for the info Mr.P!
Looks like that piece is not from the same era as my 7400 which was sold in 73-74.
Kenwood Stereo Receiver Model KR-7400 (http://vintageelectronics.betamaxcollectors.com/kenwoodstereoreceivermodelkr-7400.html)

I just assumed the KR designation put them closer together.

Some one correct me if I'm wrong, going from memory, I believe all Kenwood receivers are "KR", integrated amps are "KA", CD players "KD", tuners "KT", lower level power amps "KM".

I think you are right with some exceptions being the Basic series amps and tuners there were also some highly regarded tuners which carried an L designation or only used a number like the 600T. I was thrown in part because I was looking at my 7400 when I replied and in part because of the meters which is not normally what you see on a later model but then again my Tascam 112mkII has meters and it was made up until about 2006.

The Kenwood were/are the best of the best IMO.

I just got this PRO10MC Sonata in near mint condition. First thing I did was to remove and put away the useless rack handles, and reverse the hex-head mounting screws. There were some of the production run that came without handles or mounting holes for them, and IMO that look is cleaner. I previously owned a B&K MC101 back in the 1990's (same as the PRO10MC, except with the inclusion of tone controls). What's old is new again.

Probably a good place for my first post being that a pair of vintage JBL speakers is what brought me to this forum in the first place. HI!

I am not an audiophile of any real sort, but I do appreciate music and preferably music that sounds nice. I recently updated the home system and found I had no need for a pair of JBL Jubal L56 speakers. My dad bought them new in the UK when he was in the service, used them forever, had the subs refoamed and took great care of them. I then used them for the last five years pretty sparingly (last three years with our baby means not a lot of loud music time!) but now not sure what to do with them. Maybe just keep them and wait until we get a bigger place to use them? I came here looking to see if there is a reason for me to either keep 'em or ship 'em, so off I go in search of info!

Welcome to AR. I am sure you will get some good advice. One thing I should tell you though is we love pictures. If you could download a picture of your JBL's. Thanks, JM

Welcome to AR Cstem!
Kids grow up pretty fast so hold onto those JBL's even when your kids start asking for them to listen to their music in a few years......... :)

A few recent additions....

Entered the outdated world of minidiscs with the Denon DMD-1000 player/recorder.

Added a Adcom GCD-575 to my Adcom/ADSL400 set-up.

Very happy with both.

BTW- On top of the Denon is a X-mas present from my brother. A Lepai LP-2020A Class-T amp. A very impressive unit that has been making the rounds in some audio circles.
