Ok this is the last one and then im done...

That John McLaughlin and The Mahavishnu Orchestra is some heavy stuff. Jan Hammer and Billy Cobham on the same recording is scary good. I think those where the years when John was into his Indian spiritual stuff.

Hey Pops hey noob...heres a little heads up for you two....I got word that a album by Paul Desmond was being re-issued again on vinyl after being out of circulation for a while. You can always find it on CD but not on vinyl. So I ordered it about 2 months ago and I had to wait till they got pressed and shipped over to cduniverse. Its a limited pressing and supply. And its only $18 not including shipping, and its 180 gram virgin vinyl. I got my copy yesterday. The album is "First Place Again" and he has Jim Hall with him as always and he has the second half of the "Modern Jazz Quartet" with him as well..that being Percy Heath and Connie Kay. so if you can spare the loot, go ahead a grab a copy while they still have them....cduniverse.com http://www.cduniverse.com/sresult.asp?HT_Search_Info=Paul+Desmond&HT_SEARCH=xartist&style=music&rmf=P

Any of you folks ever have someone who you're so hooked on that you'd get this much of her stuff?

Guys these are all fantastic. Fidelity wise the "Incantation" LP is off the charts. It's traditional S.American music featuring heavy guitar and pan flute. Gorgeous sound. The top one in the first pic is Peter Tosh. The Segovia is a Decca Gold Label in excellent condition. It tracks really, really nicely. Any of you guys have experience with gold label?

I stopped by and did a little record shopping on the way home from work, today. For the princely sum of $12.99, including tax, I took home this batch of classical that all went to the clearance bin yesterday, according to the date on the tags. That one front and center, Karen Bella, is the exception...not classical. I bought it on a whim because it's local to Dallas.

noob, how do you select your claasical? Are you familiar with the music, or do you just go with composer.

02audionoob
08-13-2010, 06:42 PM
It's a bit of both. With this batch, there were 15 total records. They were all from the big name composers and noteworthy works by those composers, so I took 11 of them. I left behind the Domingo and Caruso performances, as well as a Mendelssohn and something else I don't remember.

I will often take a chance on composers I don't know as well if the perormance features a well-known musician I know I like. I discovered I like Haydn because of taking a chance on a Wynton Marsalis record and Elgar because I found a Jacqueline Du Pre record.

I do like to have the most famous works of all time, even multiple performances of them. I don't have a great many of those cases, but certainly several among Beethoven, Mozart, Mahler and a handful of others in the top tier. I also sometimes like to explore a composer's influences or proteges. With all those considerations, it's about like my approach to jazz. One day I'm listening to Brubeck and then suddenly I realize I've "discovered" Desmond.

Nice grab noob, you probably recall I scored that Humble Pie in NM condition. Personally I love that LP, and I am partial to the entire Filmore E/W series.

As for The Three, with Ray Brown in the line up, you're guaranteed a good LP. Have you listened yet? Is it a good candidate for a rip?

Well guys, I dropped $50 at a shop on the other side of town. Turns out they have a great jazz selection. I really dug. I even did some crate diving. After an hour I came out with these.

Sorry about the bad pic. The top two are Red Rodney, I picked them for the supporting cast including Ray Brown, Philly Jones, Elvin Jones, Shelly Manne, Tommy Flanagan and others.

The Perlman/Previn have the same line up on both LPs, bought for Jim Hall's appearance. Also on those is Shelly Manne and Red Mitchell.

These are all pretty self explanatory. I took a roll with the Al Cohn, but with Herb Ellis accompanying, I can't see how it won't be great.

BTW frenchie, they had a couple of Mose Allison LPs. A beautiful NM double LP on Prestige simply titled Allison. Have you heard that one? They wanted $30.

My next trip back I'll be picking up JJ JOhnson and Kai Winding, they had it half off so I put it on hold. Only $12. That's a classic...

Good score. Did you know for a time touring the south, Red Rodney was past off and featured as Albino Red in Parkers band? He was the only white man in Charlie Parker band...and in the south, they would not like a white man in a black band so they had to feature him as Albino Red.

I dont recall ever listening to that one. But Mose is truly a living legend. He has his own style and no one, I mean no one can sound like him. He has written hundreds of tunes and has a very large following across the musical spectrum, and has influenced many including the great Jimmy Hendrix....and hundreds of musicians have recorded his music, and he has played with many Jazz and blues stars. Stan Getz is one such giant that comes to mind. The man was simply born to write and play his style of music.

I dont know Kai Winding. Let me know what you think.

Just got through giving them the cleaning regimen. Now spinning the first of two in that one in the lower right. It's a double live album featuring Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus and others at Massey Hall in 1953. This is a 1973 re-issue. Sides 1 and 2 were the original.

Picked this one up on the auction site. Condition was overstated, even more than usual, so I'll still be looking for a keeper. You gotta love this cover. My Julie London goal is now two records from completion, but one of them (Swing Me An Old Song) is apparently seen less often than Bigfoot.

So today a guy at my work brought in a crate of LPs for me. He has long discussed giving them to me, but with no result. I had given up on him. There were about 50 or so. Some great stuff, most of which I don't have. The covers are beat up but the vinyl is super clean.

I went to my local record shop to pickj up some inners/outters. The owner asked to look at what I had, and ended up buying a few, giving me $65 in trade.

Picked up some tasty jazz as a result. All in all a great day. Now i have the tubes warming up...

Yes, you ripped me a copy of Sugar, remember? I love it, and it has two of my faves, Hubbard and Benson. All of these LPs are original.

It's funny you say easy listening. I find it pretty laid back too. That's about as close to "smooth jazz" as i want to come. For chillin out, I think nothing beats Hank Mobley. Of course, the West Coast cats are good for that too...Desmond, Getz, Cohn, etc...

BTW, I spent some time experimenting and have hit on a great chain for ripping. I know you rip LPs too. What gear do you use Joe? Check out the turntable forum at AK and search "ripping LP". Have you checked out the EM-U stuff? Frankly, I'm happy with my Soundblaster.

Now that my rips are top notch, and I mean TOP NOTCH, I am moving away from discs. Sure I will still burn CDs and use a CDP but as far as reference goes, I may step up my DAC and get a Squeezebox.

I loaned out a pair of Grado headphones that made the rounds, I'm not sure to whom, for over a year. They finally made their way back to me. The ear pads were a little suspect upon return so it was time to order another pair, but I can't justify an online order for just one item, especially a boring pair of $10 ear pads made with .50 worth of foam. Had to throw in some vinyl as well. Knocked Wilco's Summerteeth and Iron & Wine's ep Woman King off the wishlist. My son asked for Deftones' White Pony on vinyl last Christmas and I couldn't find it anywhere. It's recently been re-released so I picked it up for him. I'm not familiar with their stuff, but since he's coming home this weekend I'm sure we'll spin it.

Ready or not, it'll soon be time for the annual Christmas vinyl haul. Need to start tightening up the wish lists.

I've been looking for this record, along with another of Ms. DuPre's works. This one is actually my 2nd choice among the two, but it was there at the store. It looked good enough at the store but has very troublesome scratches across the 2nd half of side 1. It was only $4 but I might return it.

I decided to go ahead and return the above record, but here's some of my latest.
If you don't know Steve Forbert, check him out. Some of this is just junk but at $1.00 each I lower my standards.

I spent $80 for 15 LPs today. No re-issues...all original and in VG to NM condition. Most notable are the 3 Marsalis titles...Vol1 - 3 of his Soul Gestures in Southern Blue series. All 3 were still sealed for 5 bucks each!!

I rounded out my Benson collection with his Farrell duo and an original W. Rabbit which I have as a reissue.

The CTI sampler looks interesting, and the rest of them I am sure you guys know already. Oh and the Nelson is super minty. My Halloween is set!!

Yes, not all junk at all. That's great Metheny LP and of course Marino and Mahogany Rush. Those 2 alone make the haul admirable. As for the ST to Who's that Girl...you can have it!

For me, the Delbert McClinton and the Steve Forbert have been the gems of this haul. With Madonna, she's a seriousness break.

PC, you don't have Body Talk. IMO it's better than several of the ones you do have. It's without a doubt better than any album he sings on. That includes Breezin' which IMO is extremely overrated. As far as Benson as a sideman goes, just buy most, if not all of the CTI catalog.

11-03-2010, 07:27 AM
Chit, you are right JOe...I have Body Talk but it didn't make it into the pic. It's not filed with the rest so now i am not sure where it is. I knew I was missing something. As for Breezin', yes it's not his greatest but it's a must own unfortuantely. CTI did a ton of reissues for him, same albums with different names and covers. One LP I like is In Flight which alot of jazz purists can't stand. He does a great cover of The World Is A Ghetto which is worth the albums price alone.

Have you heard Alligator Boogaloo? It's a great LP, he really is a master.

Oh and Joe have you heard those Marsalis LPs I bought? I have started ripping them. It was tough to open them, they looked so minty.

My Red Rodney collection is getting quite expansive. I also have some Ira Sullivan releases featuring him. His best LPs are from his early days, and then later on Muse records. Check out The Red Arrow and Superbop.

BTW, I ordered my Squeezebox today. The store had run out of Touch. Should have it by the weekend. This store is really cool noob. It's called Mostly Digital (http://www.mostlydigital.ca/). They sell Macs, but aside from that it's basically esoteric computer-centric gear. Audio, cameras, monitors, etc.

One thing they had which caught my eye is the M-Audio speakers which everyone speaks so highly of. I am going to see if they have an auditioning policy.

I bought a new Ultralink toslink cable, to challenge my Monster. Toslink is my only option between the Yammy and the dac. If I hear alot of difference I may lay down some cash on an Audioquest.

Would you like some rips? Oh and I also have some Stevie ray LPs that I am rippping for myself. They are all originals.

OK I have decided to rip some Red Rodney. BTW, my Ultralink cable is exactly on par with the Tributaries. Unlike the Monster of equivelant value, which audibly smeared the signal. Pffft, Monster can really be a joke sometimes.

If you do some Red Rodney rips, I'd like a copy. But no need to do any for me if you're not already doing them. I'm a little bit loaded up with a stack of varied stuff I borrowed from the local library. I'm digging the 2008 Steve Winwood album, for one. These are up next...

On the Rhapsody downloading, it works about like iTunes, except it's MP3 format. It's mostly $0.99 per track, except that some (like this Red Rodney album) are available only as a full album. Most of those are $9.99. Considering the 128k bit rate, I've never considered downloading to be an option.

noob, I have both of those RR LPs ripped, just need to export.

I want your opinion about the SQ. Those blues LPs are not good candidates because the production is poor. I will use Superbop as a standard as it really pushes the treble with the horns. I think the AT may be a tad bright in the upper register. It's wavering between extremely revealing to fatiguing. I have my Empire and Shure both mounted on headshells so I can rip Superbop with each. I'll let you know when the albums are all ready.

BTW, do you want any Stevie Ray?

I don't have the time to photograph all of them but here's the pick of the lot. Near mint Smith, Mingus and Hancock. I almost had a stroke. I also got some replacements that are better quality, but there's a good dozen or so that are "new" to me.

Neil Young and Crazy horse, double live album
Ray Charles 3 LPs
Chuck Berry
Elton john
Slade, Prince, Wings....

Wow!! Looks great barbarian!! Great to hear from you, glad your analog interests are going strong. My favorite period of Dylan LPs would have to be with The Band backing him, fave LP would be Blonde on Blonde. If you really want to get to the roots, you must check out Woody Guthrie. But if you really want to get to the roots of Dylan, he "borrowed" much of his image and style from the legendary Ramblin Jack Elliott.

Elliott cut some great albums in the UK for a label called Topic and then in his heyday, for Prestige and Vanguard. They are quite sought after on todays vinyl market, particularily the Topic releases. I would suggest buying any reissues you can find especially the albums cut with Derroll Adams.

Have you made any upgrades to your system? I forget, did you buy speaker stands?

My first exposure to Ramblin' Jack Elliott was on his contributions to the Bread and Roses album. The Bread and Roses group performed in concerts and the music was played in prisons in California. Great music and a great cause.

I have heard the great rambling Jack dozens of times. No Dylan, but still great IMO.

Admittedly, Dylan's music is much more engaging.

The problem is when you look at the specific history of Dylan's association first with Guthrie (whom everyone at the time idolized), and then Elliott, one can't help but be a little miffed with Dylan. He did however find his own voice and style but in the beginning, it was Elliott's he portrayed.

There is a legendary story about Woody Guthrie's time with Lead Belly. He would always ask Lead Belly to show him riffs, but Lead Belly would say "if you want a riff, steal it...I'm not just gonna give it away!"

Thinking of that, I think Dylan did what many musicians had done before him and certainly after.

some dynamic recordings are intentionally mastered at a lower level to accommodate the dynamic range of the performance.

example: matt catingub's :your friendly neighborhood big band" is this way on one side due to wide dynamic range. it may well have lunched the cutting process if done at the usual level. the label-reference recordings made that decision rather than compress or peak limit the disc.

Zoot turned out to be fantastic. A real toe-tapper. It was enough to make me stop and just listen without distractions. I love the energy of it. It's not like it's technical perfection or anything. It's like the guy in The Big Chill said, though, "Sometimes you have to just let art flow over you."

Oh...thats a young looking Zoot. I know all about Zoot.... Did a few things with Al Cohn. He did a lot of stuff with swing bands of the 40 and 50's as well. Hes and old master sax man up there with the greats...Hawkins, Lester Young, and the likes.

Oh that old thing? Actually that is a fine piece of equipment. You don't find many reviews on it. A few but not many. Have you listen to one? If so what where your thoughts? The only problem I have with Bel Canto is they can be proprietorial. That piece is a loaner from my dealer...I may purchase one some time before the year is over if I find the right preamp.

Now that I have my Dual changer up and running well, my buying addiction is encompassing 78s. Like I needed that. Anyway, my latest find were at a thrift store stop over the weekend that yielded 5 albums with about a dozen records each and 20 singles discs, all 78s, mostly western swing, Spade Cooley, Bob Wills, Tex Ritter, Earnest Tubb, etc... Been having a ton of fun slapping stacks of them on the changer. Gotta get to cleanin' 'em up soon so I can get a better listen without all the dirt and grime in those old grooves. The whole collection looks pretty darn nice condition wise though. The discs look in really nice shape underneath a layer of dirt, not all scratched up or anything. I did leave behind a couple stacks of square dance records and an album full of Doris Day and Dinah Shore records though.

Well it seems I am listening to less and less vinyl these days, but maybe this score will help solve that problem. Apologies about the shoddy pic. The Clark Terry - "Swinging" was still sealed. I am most excited about the Ruby Braff, it's my first LP of his.

-Ruby Braff - Swinging w/ Ruby Braff
-Clark Terry/Bob Brookemyer Quintet - What'd He Say? / The Power Of Positive Swinging
-The Best Of Basie (Roullette)
-Art Tatum and Co. - Tatum Group Masterpisece
-Hubert Laws - The Chicago Theme
- Various Artists - I Giganti Del Jazz
-The Greatest Of Stan Getz (Roost...original!!)
-The Jonah Jones Quartet - Swingin Around The World

Poppa nice score!!! How is that Hubert Laws record; I have always wondered? You have been absent from the vinyl zone? Life is getting in the way, huh? That Tatum looks like it is on Pablo, which is an under appreciated label.

I have been buying a lot more cd's because I got a cheap PS1 and I have scored a lot of dollar cds that were finds in the thrift stores. I think cds will be the new treasure finds second hand because everyone is dumping them for mp3s.

I have been buying a lot of records in the last year and gear as well (good grief).

Maybe, the count for the last year has been 150 lps.

Here in L.A. there is a roaming swap meet in the various cities that comprise the greater Los Angeles area every weekend. The one near me in Pasadena is on the first Sunday of every month. I save my money each month for it and I will post about it with some pictures after the next one in a couple of weeks.

Here are some of the suprise hits for me, most are thrift store finds, with a little store and swap meet scores:

Here is the funniest score at GW for $2 a piece

JBL Speaker and Sure cartridge test records:

I bought these at the same time i bought this Sony SACD player for $25. I think these were all from the same Audiophile:

Here are some thrift store classical finds $1 please:

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6233/6255013216_4db72bbb3b.jpg

Some rock thrift store finds 1 - 2 $$. I really was surprised how much I liked the Fleetwood. I really like Dave Edmunds an Madness. AC/DC= nuff said:

Dollar albums that pretty good (the white Marcus Roberts is actually exceptional):

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6043/6255014944_36121c7a75.jpg

These were albums that were purchased at the stores or swap meet that were priced cheap and I don't know why, they are considered the seminal albums by these musicians:

I think this comment sounds about right, they were both great with different approaches. Kay was a better fit for what MJQ were doing. Klook moved to Europe and recorded with the best of the best out there.

02 that Pyramid LP has been sitting on a shelf of a shop I go to for some time now. Should I buy it? I'm not the biggest fan but I enjoy them from time to time.

I noticed in an earlier post that you had an Atlantic Jazz comp record. How is it? Is that a collection of sessions produced by the great Tom Dowd? His Atlantic productions are suppposed to be technically beautiful. I will look for that one.

I have been doing great scoring classical vinyl at various Goodwill and St. Vincent De Paul. I love a lot of Classical music and when you find it used, its usually in pretty good shape. I also hit Jerry's in Pittsburgh. He has roughly one million classical and turntables throughout the store for test spinning. What a place. when you
enter the store there are stacks and stacks of local collections he buys sight unseen. My wife gets sick in there from the mold and dust of the many millions of records. I could live there.
Cheers to all vinyl hounds.

I have an aching back that keeps me at home a lot. Playing records is good therapy for me.

Sold off a couple boxes of CDs and traded for a pretty big stack of vinyl, a few replacing CD versions. Can't remember them all, but I think this is most of 'em:

El Rego et Ses Commandos
Alternative Funk : Folie Distinguée
J. Mascics: Several Shades of Why
James Brown: Soul on Top
Raveonettes: In and Out of Control
Little Anthony & the Impreials: S/T
Jimmy Smith: The Sermon (replacing my trashed copy)
Billie Holiday: Recital
White Stripes: De Stijl
AFCGT: S/T
James Blake: S/T
Amy Winehouse: Back in Black
Nicolas Jaar: Space is Only Noise
Los Lobos: And a Time to Dance
Washed Out: Within and Without
Galaxie 500: This is Our Music
Klark Kent: S/T
Kraftwerk: Computer World
Stan Ridgeway: The Big Heat
DJ Spooky: Riddim Warfare
Sonic Youth Bad Moon Rising

A couple others that I forget off hand, but I am certainly enjoying this little haul. Biggest single record shopping day, especially in terms of shiny new vinyl, that I've had for a long time, probably 3-4 years.

I like the James Blake. Have been listening to a download for a while and wanted to check out the vinyl sound and it's quite nice. I'm really not a huge fan of his vocals and am more interested in the music on that album, especially the bass. The vocals don't distract me too much, but they're not at all the draw for me. And actually the first time I heard it I was listening on tiny laptop speakers and thought the whole thing was rather boring until I heard it on a bigger setup where you could get into the bass on there. I honestly prefer Mount Kimbie, a group that works with a very similar collection of sounds and that big bass rumble but has a lot of instrumental tracks. They've actually done a bit of work together as well with both remixing each other's stuff.

Anyone looking for some fun vinyl should check out Thai Funk Volumes 1 & 2 on the Light in the Attic label. Just p[icked them both up. Both are 2 LP sets and they each are very well pressed and come is special hand sewn cloth covers. The fidelity isn't anything special because of ewhat they contain but they are well done.

They are both collections of funk, soul and disco from Thailand in the 70s and 80s. A mix of covers and originals. All really fun stuff.

Speaking of buying vinyl... if you are a reggae fan and have not visited Ernie B's reggae online, you need to check it out. Enormous selection of reggae vinyl, both new and used including a ton of great reissues of classic albums cheap (such as the more recent Studio One reissues for 6.99 & 8.99) as well as original rare Jamaican records priced quite a bit higher but fairly. Best selection and prices on reggae I have found by far. Saturday afternoon, the following arrived at my house:

Dennis Brown: No Man is an Island
The Best of Don Drummond
Treasure Island in Dub
Lee Perry: Return of the Super Ape (Been listening to Super Ape for years, about time to finally get around to the squeal)

4 Lee's Gold 10" 45s - which were all on sale for like 2 bucks each and feature people like Cornell Campbell, Johnny Clarke, Freddie McGregor, IRoy, and more with King Tubby, Tappa Zukie and others throwing on several dub versions. Each disk has 6 songs, three per side and it's a lot of great material

Ernie B use to come into the shop I worked at years ago and pick up the reggae 45's we sold. He was a cool guy for sure; chill and unpretentious. He's got the life with his reggae tunes over in Long Beach.

Funny thing about those 45's: 25% of them had pot-holes and the labels off center because the guys were most likely blunted :) We bought from small labels nothing from Island records or the like.

Nice score!!

Yeah, I've had some bad luck with exactly those issues when buying Jamaican pressings. I've seen a few documentaries on record making in Jamaica and more than a few of those shops pressing records look a bit less than as tidy as one would hope, including press operators grabbing records with one hand all over the grooves while toking on something held in the other.

Back in the day I loved listening to Jug and Dex together as dueling partners, and I always thought there was something special and nice about the way Taylor swings that ride cymbal. But even to this day, Jug is over looked as a giant by Jazz fans. This guy was looked up to by many who are more famous than he. Couldn't resist a little bargain shopping at the record show. For about $20 total (most were two bucks with a couple for 3 and a couple for 1), picked up the following:

<b>James Brown: It's A Man's Man's Man's World</b> - The only one where the vinyl is a bit scratchy, but after cleaning up plays a heck of a lot better than it looks with just an occasional pop or click.

<b>Smokey Robinson & the Miracles: Tears of a Clown</b> - Just a great album, that it seems was originally released under a different title then re-released once the title track became a big hit 3 years after the original release.

<b>Black Sabbath: Paranoid</b> - I've never been pleased with the muted sound of the fancy 180 gram re-issue of this I've been making due with for a few years now and had to grab an original to replace the long gone copy I remember fondly.

<b>Cheap Trick: In Color</b> - I really like the first few Cheap Trick albums, this is one of my favorites of theirs.

<b>Simple Minds: Real to Real Cacophony</b> - Hadn't hearsd this one before and it's actually really good, way more post-punk and angular than their later more pop sounding releases, interesting indeed.

<b>Ladysmith Black Mambazo: Journey of Dreams</b> - Still sealed. Pretty great voices, but I"m not familiar enough with their entire catalog to know how this particular release sticks up. It is beautiful though.

<b>Wilson Pickett: Wicked Pickett</b> - One of his best albums, includes Mustang Salley and a smattering of his bigger hits.

<b>Cannonball Adderly with Sergio Mendes : Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars</b> - Had never heard of this one but grabbed it on a whim, if you like the Getz/Gilberto combination and that 60 Bosa Nova style jazz stuff this is really good.

<b>Duke Ellington Presents</b> - I've never heard a bad Duke Ellington album, really.

<b>Meet the Searchers: Needles & Pins</b> - British invasion band, featuring their biggest hit and a lot of other solid, consistiently strong material.

<b>The Suicide Commandos: Make a Record</b> - I've had a mint copy of this one for yeas and it's an all time favorite, but I couldn't resist a second copy for $3. I was fairly shocked to see this one in the box.

So yup, a good day at the show and a lovely Sunday spent cleaning them up and listening.

I really need to stop wandering around flea markets on the weekends. This is getting out of hand. But, some good finds for cheap and they are all in great shape. Couple less than perfect covers but the vinyl is all nice and quiet. The pile shown doesn't count a stack of 20 50s/60s 45s for 2 bucks that are great fun to play with.

Just picked this up today. Kenny Burrell Midnight Blue 45 RPM 2 LP on 180g vinyl.

Amazing! Rich, full and textured. I now know what people mean when they talk about holographic.

Amazing material and recording.

I really enjoy the sound of 45 rpm vinyl in my system.

The only downside? With only 7 songs on 2 LP's there is a lot of up and down to change sides. Easily worth it.

Just got a new 10.5" reel of good tape for the Pioneer 909. This will be the first thing on it.

IMO, everyone needs to own this one.

Burrell's Midnight Blue is my go-to album for people who want to hear a good jazz album. I consider it to be one of the most accessible to the novice out of all the all-time great jazz albums. Anyone who hears it loves it.

I ventured a little outside my usual genres...not too far, though. I sort of liked Kristofferson back in the days of his work with wife, Rita Coolidge. I liked Rita better, and not just for her beauty (which was somewhat impressive). This was sitting at Half-Price Books sealed and I was in a spendy mood.

Bought a mystery box of records off Craigslist site unseen for cheap. Was described as some R&B stuff. I can't say it was a treasure trove, but did end up with some really good stuff mixed in there. Some Parliament records, some Slave, Lee Oskar, a couple Isaac Hayes, O'Jays, Smokey Robinson, the Brothers Johnson, Earth Wind & Fire, Temptations, Average White Band. There's also several 12" singles, most of which are too obscure for me to know much about. Started with a pile of about 60-70, and have maybe 15-20 designated for the dumpster, the rest at least somewhat interesting. The vinyl so far is all in great shape, but the covers are kinda rough, bad enough they would be tough to sell for much, but since I bought them for listening good enough. Spinning Parliment right now.

Man!! You guys are killin me!! nobody such impressive hauls!! I began collecting Jazztone sides and am currently in need of only 8 more to finish. These are all originals with the covers pictured in your post. One thing about Jazztone, if you just want the music, many of the albums have been reissued several times over the years. One good example is Sammy Price And His Barrelhouse Blues... man that side has been pressed under two or three of the sidemen's names, let alone Sam Price.

Noob you are emassing a wonderful collection of jazz essentials my friend. Your tastes have really become refined and when I see an Argo Jazztet side in your post, I can't help but be pleased.

Oh and yes nobody, I must comment about those 45's... so impressive. I went through a spell of Norman Granz produced Eldridge sides. I paid dearly but managed to find most at "reasonable" prices. My next move would logically be back to the Vogue sides which preceded his time with Clef/Verve. How do they sound??

And the Dave Cortez?!?!??! Pfffft... what can I say, brilliant!!!!

You guys have inspired me to begin posting in this thread again....

Yes I have that Little Richard side you are talking about Dave, with the portrait of him on the cover right? Nice one. I will suggest that if you grab any Pickett on Atlantic, try to grab a mono copy. The stereo copies tend to be much noisier with a thinner sound overall.

I have a couple new sides, but I'm particularily thrilled about the Thad Jones. If you can believe it, I found this live album sealed for $5 at a local antique market. Opening it was like being privvy to some sort of time capsule...

... firstly, the mail card dropped out. Then I dug inside to find the booklet. Artists House was a flash in the pan as far as labels go, but they left a great legacy. The booklet is awesome. Highlights for me would be a complete list of the recording equipment/configuration used for the session, and a complete (current in 1977) discography for both Lewis and Jones. Being a Thad Jones fan, I was really excited about the disco list as it appears to be the most thorough I have ever seen.

The album has a high quality inner sleeve - paper with a wax interior. Of course the vinyl itself is pressed wonderfully. Really black and dead quiet with that real hifi sound. Such a treat isn't it???

Jealous of nobody's records, but here's a new one for me...

Been looking for some Emily Remler LPs for at least a year - never saw one in person until today.

It's like a sickness! Ever since I bought I turntable I am like a junkie! I am trying not to replicate my entire CD Collection but some are just too good to pass up.
To me vinyl sounds better and is more involving than cds, so it is worth having duplicates of your cd collection. Buying music is better than always buying gear. Plus some good music just isn't available on cd.
Keep it up!

Tonight, a battle was fought between a Shure M97xe, Technics headshell and a mirrored protractor. After 35 minutes, it was a fight worth fighting. 99.99% perfect alignment...so worth it!

i am lost on that one bob, was it the mirror? well, anyway, even though i have MORE than enough LPs (~6k) i still am acquiring. just when i tell myself i shouldn't and won't, i buy a couple more that i just feel i must have, either for the price or i just don't have that one (or more) and they are in VG condition.

Just picked this up as it is one of my all time favorites. Bought "Aqualung" for $29.95 and now it's going for $200. Hopefully I'll get as lucky with this.

I have discovered that a local store that specializes in new and 2nd-hand electronics also has a decent vinyl selection.
