Hello guys,

I own a JBL PB -12 sub...I would like to upgrade the driver for something better. I am thinking in Dayton or Peerless. The JBL driver distors when play loud. What do you advice??
Thanks,
Jorge.

Well I was an owner of a JBL E250p subwoofer for a few years until about a month ago when the amp blew. When it blew I went online and found out that JBL subwoofers are notorious for blowing the amplifiers so I would not want to tax the amp any harder than you are with the stock woofer. I would say that Dayton and Peerless subwoofer drivers are very good but I would put something behind them a little more powerful and reliable than the PB-12's amp. Just my opinion but I think if you changed to a more damanding sub I believe you will only shorten the live of you amp in your PB-12 since they are known for blowing anyway. I am by no way trying to knock your sub or anything I am just going off of personal experience. Plus the PB-12 enclosure is probably not ideal for the Dayton or the Peerless subs but I don't have the numbers in front of me to prove that but I bet that either subs will need different air space or port length to work properly

Yes, you are right!!! . The driver need to match with the enclosure. JBL made a new amplifier to correct the problem with the PB-12. My has the new amp. This is an experiment, it may result or may not.
Thanks.

Well if you have a newer one with a better amp then of you know enclosure volumes and port length variance and know how to adjust for that and can find a Dayton or Peerless sub to work then go for it. Either one of these brands are good and I have worked with drivers from both companies with good results. So if you have a newer amp that will not blow and you ca find a model to work in your enlcosure sure you can try it and see if your performance is better. I took my JBL apart and found many things that JBL did not do that would have made it sound better. I would dampen the enclosure with enclosure lining material form Parts express or Madisound and you could also take some acoustastuff material and play around with different amounts of it to get the tightest and most natural sounding bass with the power handling and dynamic ability you are looking for.
