Hey all. Seems there's no shortage of bass players here at AR. Thought I'd devise a scheme to entertain our slappin and poppin needs, right here at AR.

First post is an amazing interview with Victor Wooten. Don't worry, he brought his bass along too...

Not the Pappa but I'm still kicking my own ass for ever selling my 70s era fret-less Rickenbacker, Sun 200 watt tube head and Ampeg SVT cabinet.

Right now I am playing an 88 Music Man through an Ampeg V4, Crate 15 and Fender 2 - 10. It's a nice combo. I have some effects I play around with too, lately a rack mounted Zoom.

Hey Auric, how can I post a screen from YouTube like you did?

harley .guy07

Yeah I play a vintage Peavey t-40 bass that is my comfort zone. I also play a Traben Kore custom 5 string. And my head and cabs are a Peavey Tour 700 head and TVX 410 and 15 cabinets. Its a real good sounding setup and I have played through it with several different styles of playing and it sounds great.

The Ampeg B-15 has a 15" also. When I bought the Traynor and the Sunn in the seventies I was going to college under the GI Bill and playing gigs on the weekends. I love the tone of the Ampeg but got tired of being drowned out by over zealous guitar players with Marshall stacks so I bought the Traynor. A friend needed bail money one time and that's how I got the Sunn.
The Ampeg was/is my favorite. One person can move it. It has some real synergy with my Baby Bass and Precision. The Sunn is very LOUD. It doesn't have the warm rich tone that tubes give the Traynor and Ampeg but it's LOUD..
The EB-3 has a round backed neck like a Les Paul. I've never liked the way it feels. I guess I've kept it because it's the only Chocolate Brown one I've ever seen. All the rest have been red.

i've been catching him here in LA for quite a while. first time with paul horn/lalo schifrin at the santa monica civic in the late 70s. if you can find the paul horn 'dream machine' album, youll get the idea. the way he wielded the weapon on stage and the resulting performance was quite a sight and sound to witness.

around town here, he plays a lot with alex acuna and justo almario. also, at the baked potato in a group called MINSTRY which isnt the rock group, i saw him play with his son (also abraham) on drums. his son can be seen playing drums behind paul mc cartney these days.

he plays sometimes in the style which i call flamenco bass. certainly one of the greats.

His work was great with P-Funk but I also REALLY enjoyed what he did with the JB's. That is, the James Brown Revue. Much more groundbreaking IMO.

Great post HyFi. Man they have tone to kill for. The intro bit in the first minute, those chords sound brilliant.

There's been alot of no mentions here. We can slowly add them all in, no rush. As I've already said, when the board is slow, it gives us bass types something to do.

Then of course, Julie Slick! No great vids with good sound but you can get the point here. Keep in mind, the bass line Julie is playing on her Lackland was originally written and performed on a stick and is extremely hard to pull off on a standard bass.

Yeah, as Pappa pointed out, that was Les Claypool with one of his many bands, Primus. He is one whacked out bassist that leaves many others in the dust with his talent. He just gets under recognized because he is not mainstream.

He also plays with Buckethead at times in place of Lasswell.

WOW! Thanks for the post HyFi. I've never heard of Tal. So impressive. She's so tiny but check out her reach, her span is wild. Plus, she's a very natural performer, fun to watch. I'll be checking out that album for sure. Have you heard it?

One of my faves. Flea. I find his style more accessible than say, Claypool. Just love his note selection and sense of time. This vid is a great example of his "awesomeness".

I still spin Blood Sugar Sex Magic. For any of you guys who have never jammed any of those tracks, try em out. So much fun. The title track is still one of my all time fave bass songs to jam on, Blood Sugar Sex Magic. Funnest song he ever wrote. Plucking minor chords just feels and sounds so big, it's addictive.

Anyhow, enjoy!!

You are quite correct. I haven't enjoyed too much since BSSM.

Have you heard The Mars Volta HyFi? Their debut album featured Flea on bass. Simply put, amazing. If you would like to hear your words in action, this would be it. He never did any touring with them and frankly, the bass work has never been up to snuff following that performance.

I would describe this release as a must have for any bass player/musician. It's really a treat, also produced by Rick Rubin. frenchmon, you reading this? You would enjoy this release. I think you would find it refreshing. Imagine if Floyd/Zeppelin/Santana jumped into a time machine in 1971, and arrived in 2020.

I can provide it for you guys if you like.

Very nice videos guy's. I did read up on the one arm bass player in Bass Player magazine but I can't remember his name but he does have a solo album out with his work on it and from what I hear its pretty cool what he can do with just his left hand. Yeah Poppa I am more of a Flea person myself, I just like his smooth playing style and like how humble he is about his playing. Did you know that Flea has come out with his own line of Bass guitars? He actually uses them himself and the funny thing is that he made sure they were priced for the starving musician to afford them. the main thing he said in the interview I read with him talking about them is that when he was starting to play it took him a long time to be able to afford a high quality bass and he wanted to give back to the musicians by making a super high quality model that is affordable. I have yet to play one but I would love to if given the chance.

Hello and welcome. Care to elaborate? He does not show up in any search.

Sorry...you'd know him as Geddy Lee. In one of Rush's albums, the liner notes included a story about him being given the nickname "Geddy" because that's what it sounded like when his mother called for him in the neighborhood "GEDDY, GEDDY LIEEEEEEBOWITZ" and that "LEE" was just his shortened last name. Or words to that effect.

I just wasted an hour trying to confirm that online, and it seems that it was crap. Geddy's first name, according to the both Wikipedia and the Rush Oddities web site, is Gary, his given MIDDLE name is Lee, and his last name is/was Weinrib.

So, to quote my favorite TV philosopher's signature line whenever he makes a fool of himself, "D'oh!"

Whatever his name, I still think he is/was one of the best bassists ever.

thats stanley, marcus, and victor. a friend went to see them and even though he isnt an aficionado, he was really jazzed. so yesterday i snagged a used copy and found it to be quite entertaining and a good subwoofer workout.

if they come around again in performance here in LA, i may just have to attend.

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:diftxztkld6e

the above link is to their solitary CD and review thereof.

silly putty on stanley's 'journey to love' album is a true bass demo. i first heard it on stacked advents driven by a phase linear 700 (or 700II) and the grill cloths were leaping from the enclosure-literally.

victor's performance on flight of the cosmic hippo from bela fleck and the flecktones is another demo quality cut.

i dont have one for marcus although he certainly can play and there must be a particular cut by him that would fit the demo description. i truly love the albums he did with miles such as tutu and siesta.

Not sure if they've been mentioned, but I do think Percy Jones, Tony Levin and Vinny Shillito ought to be nominated. Percy Jones’ contributions to Brand X are, in my estimation, some of the deftest I have ever heard. He has a subtlety of presence that makes him nearly invisible…I can listen to it for hours without getting tired. Tony Levin is a very musical bassist, and can play his instrument in any number of astonishing ways. One moment he growls and plucks like a bad-ass monster; at others, his sonorous offerings are as liquid as Yo Yo Ma’s cello…Listen to some cuts from his Waters of Eden, and tell me if you don't hear something special. Finally, special mention should go to Vinny Shillito, who’s ready and nimble playing I only recently learned about while listening to the Ozric Tentacles. On their newest album, The Yum Yum Tree, the Ozrics play a mish-mash of fusion, psychedelic funk and jazz, that is simply some of the most exciting stuff I have enjoyed as of late. Shillito’s bass is agile, assured and not at all overbearing. While certainly not a step-aside continuo performer, Shillito’s thumping and throbbing brings an almost heart-beat quality to the music that just draws you in…

Not sure if they've been mentioned, but I do think Percy Jones, Tony Levin and Vinny Shillito ought to be nominated.
