A simple question, but after having spent much of the night reading various forums, it alarms me that so many people get this wrong. The results of this pop quiz will count 90% against your final grade. Begin...and as my old AP History professor used to say, may God have mercy on your souls!

It depends on the size of the screen as well as the viewing distance. No??

Simply put, it depends on the size of the display.

WHEN YOU WALK INTO THE ROOM, BASICALLY.
I used to think there was little difference, couldnt have been more wrong.
One (of many) reasons, on 1080i material it just has to deinterlace the pic,
a 720 has to throw information away.
The difference is somewhat glaring, at least to me.:1:

Works great for me.

720p at 22 feet. 106" screen.

Still, I'm getting close to that 1080p line.

I'm there. 104" at 12-15 feet. 1080p is purrrrtty.

I bet it is. Someday my ship will come in, and I'll have lots of new toys.

720p at 22 feet. 106" screen.

Also works well if you have a girlfriend who likes to rearrange furniture every 3 months (like I do).

Me: "A little more to the left, honey. There you go...perfect!!!"

To make the money I've spent, worthwhile, I'd need a 90 inch screen or larger in that I'm about 15 feet away. Wowsers.

Working in the film industry has always made me a standards guy. I used this chart when I set up all of my hometheater systems. However, you have to always balance this information with other information, like the fusion distance of your speakers drivers. Sometimes in following this rule of thumb, you may violate others. Everything is a balance when you are trying to do this right in this hobby.

Does this chart assume 20/20 vision? My neighbor says he has 20/10. Does he get to sit closer?

Yes, the chart assumes 20/20 or corrective lenses to approximate.

That said, if your friend isn't using spectacles or contacts and there's no lasik surgery in their immediate plans, then yes, he or she may move one eye closer to the screen in order to compensate. :p
