As the saying goes..."Behind every sucessful man there is a woman", the same thing can be said about every sucessful movies. And they shine in these movies (in parenthesis).

Not in any particular order:

Sally Field (Kiss me Goodbye): Two times academy and three times emmy award winner, she is probably the most versatile actress in Hollywood.

Joan Crawford (Johnny Guitar): In this western where women rule, Joan Crawford is at her best.

Claudia McNeil (Raisin In the Sun): One of the best american-african actress with a strong screen personality to match.

Kathy Bates (About Schmidt): She was good in Misery and Late Shift, but not as much fun as in About Schmidt.

Holly Hunter (Raising Arizona): A chance encounter with playwright in an elevator led to Broadway, Holly wood and Academy award for best actress.

Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking): Best known for her role in Thelma and Louise, she turned in an opposite role in Dead Man Walking with Sean Penn.

Meryl Streep (Kramer Vs Kramer): As one of the most talented and respected movie actress in Hollywood, she is in the same league as Pacino and Deniro.

Wiona Ryder (Edward Scissorhands): She probably could have saved Godfather III where she was originally cast, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Katleen Turner (Serial Mom): Serial Mom is perhaps her finest hour, sick, twisted but hilarious in every sense.

Whoopi Goldberg (Ghost): She became the first black female to win Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in nearly 50 years.

I would add in no order:

Uma Thurman - grace beauty and a willingness to take a variety of roles and do them well. Her performances in Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction were excellent and I am hoping she gets that role of a lifetime - she could pull it off.

Marissa Tomei - equally at home with comic turns like My Cousin Vinny but quite startlingly raw in "In the Bedroom"

Jodie Foster - Maybe an obvious choice but that's no crime

Charlize Theron - Monster - perhaps the finest performance by an actress in film history - if not it ranks right up there.

Hilary Swank - 2 Oscars - enough said.

Juliette Binoche - beautiful, brilliant in Blue - but breathtakingly bodacious in everything.

Rachel Weisz - Constant Gardner, Sunshine - not a lot of evidence to her ability quite yet but she is very very good.

Kate Winslet - the Reader showed a new level for Kate - and her prior level was already ahead of most.

And maybe lastly and perhaps bestly -
Cate Blanchett - one of if not the best actress around at disappearing - she really is a chameleon. She's played Katherine Hepburn, Bob Dylan and an Elf - wow. She could also have been nominated for Oscar and Lucinda - which unfortunately nobody saw.

Are we talking fine acting or fine babes??

If acting, there was Helen Mirren in The Queen ...

Or how about both -- a couple that come to mind:

Cate Blanchette in Elizabeth: The Golden Age ...

And if we're talking really hot, Halle Berri in Monster's Ball. I'm linking this photo, but there are videos, oh yeah ...

Smokey used the word "favorite" so I assumed it was any criterion you want.

I want the job of Halle Berry's "Love Slave" - great performance in Monster's Ball - just wished she'd get more roles like that.

Yes, anything that turn you on :)

And so far so many great choices. Actresses like Audrey Hepburn, Helen Mirren (the Queen), Cate Blanchett and Judy Davis are very noteworthy. Although must admit not too much knowlegable about non-american actresses.

I reserve the rights for Halle Berry :D

Charlize Theron - Monster - perhaps the finest performance by an actress in film history - if not it ranks right up there.

The performance by Charlie Theron was right down scary in Monster movie. Roger Ebert said that he did not notice the actress was Theron playing the lead role untill the end of movie. You can not get higher compliment than that.

Not that there's anything wrong with that...Indisputably it has to be Tuesday Weld in
Stanley Kubricks' "Lolita"...(young punk kids, don't know what good acting is)
Absolutely tied for first place is Jane Fonda in "Barbarella", she had more "chops" than
any actress since Faye Ray in "King Kong...damn...now I'm hungry...where's my teeth??

Are we talking about acting or eye candy. Here's mine for that latter.

Otherwise my favorites are Kathryn Hepburn and Meryl Streep. Is there any better actress alive today than Meryl?

Are we talking about acting or eye candy.

Given that the original word used was "favorite" and some of the early choices are not necessarily considered to be eye candy, I think it would be which ones do you or the public love for whatever reason.

I chose Audrey Hepburn because she was so widely appreciated...not just because of her beauty or her acting skills. If you look at the women who can carry a movie...that to me is your list of candidates.
