He never got over the death of Fred Rogers...

My first exposure to Catholic Boy was in 1982 - I was a bit behind in the more esoteric punk rock scene at that point. I guess the highest praise I can give the album is that I have it on vinyl and CD and still bust it out for a spin every year or two. I would think that this album would be a must have for most aging punk rockers.

I never felt especially compelled to buy any more of his records though. Also, never even saw the Basketball Diaries. I have a difficult time dealing with Decaprio. I suspect it'll be showing on one of the HBO channels soon. Maybe this will be the year.

The other records...well, I used to have I Write Your Name or whatever it was called. I think it's safe to say one could stick to Catholic Boy. Actually, it's a really good record that seems like they caught lightning in a bottle, considering how poor the follow-ups were. Yet it doesn't seem like a fluke for some reason. It's like everything that was great about the Patti Smith Group in one great record, and they squeezed out all of the great r'n'r possibilities the guy--a poet, not really a songwriter, not particularly musical--was capable of.

The movie the Basketball Diaries is unwatchable, especially if one has read the book. It's like they're two completely different things: the movie was a cautionary drug tale, while in the book Carroll was more or less unapologetic. Skip the flick, and not because you don't like DeCaprio; but certainly read the book. One of the best books I've ever read, hysterical, disturbing, true...and though I'm not a huge basketball fan, I do have to wonder how JC might have fared had he pursued b-ball instead of heroin. I know someone whose father was an NBA player agent and who saw Carroll play in high school in the 1960s who claimed he was a can't-miss future All-Star.

I'd say he's arguably an All-Star as far as cultural contributions on the basis of the book; Catholic Boy is a great album, and then there's the poetry, which is not exactly my thing, but those who dig it dug him.

Wow. I thought he was already dead.

Lol, me, too.

I saw them when he was touring behind that record, at the local college. Never could get into the guy, and was seriously underwhelmed by the performance.

Now the opening band, they were focking awesome! Check 'em out- one of my favorites from back in the day, Fungo Mungo.
