How about an IKEA bookcase?

I stopped buying racks years ago and started crafting my own. If you have a large collection that will only get larger, it's the only way to go. I have EXACTLY the look I want, super efficient on space and practical for archiving. It's basically just a wall unit. Lots of designs available online for free. I don't have time to post a pic right now but I'll take one for you Mingus...

Hi Mingus,
I have used these people twice and they were great, they also have all brands and quality types, I think they have close to 1000 choices..........

Steph beat me to the punch. I just ordered an Atlantic from them. Not sure the model but it holds 504 DVD's and $139.00, reg. $180.00 and free shipping. it's a bookshelf style. If you can't find what you are looking for at Racks&Stands, give up. A couple years back I bought one of those that rotate. It was a bear to put together but once in place a pretty cool product. I had 3 sides CD's and one DVD's, now my DVD's are over flowing so I have to get a dedicated rack for DVD. Now I have CD expansion again. If I run out of space after this, I am, going to have to consider a hard drive alternative :) Not likely

Thanks Steph. I ordered two Atlantic's tonight. I really need them Each holds 750+ CD's. Their prices are nice. Free shipping doesn't hurt either.

Why? Why would you not want to use your PC?

P.S. Sorry if this is off topic.

The Atlantic unit that holds 504 DVDs sounds just what I need. Is it a sturdy unit. The 504 DVDs will add a lot of weigh on the shelves.

My wife and I purchased two of these for the back of our media room.

They're a little more costly, but I was able to pick them up locally and avoid the shipping charges. Ours are a dark cherry finish and look great.

While I agree with Pop, making your own isn't for everyone. What are you looking for in terms of a "look". I'm married so my wife often has an opinion about this.

1) Will it be hidden? 2) If not, does it need to look like furniture? etc.

Mingus, I just ordered mine last week and haven't received it yet, so it will be a while before I can comment on sturdiness. DVD's will be lighter than books.

Regarding the Atlantic 504 DVD, it too big for the space I intended for (just did the measurement). I probably go with a smaller unit. Currently I have two racks which holds approx. 265 DVD each. Each rack contains DVDs, wii, ps3 and xbox games, so it fills up pretty quickly. I have a separate rack for CDs. I probably get another one similar in size. These racks are located in the basement. I have a smaller rack in the living room.

Considering the poster hanging above the shelves, this is one man who apparently doesn't have to worry about WAF. :p

Mingus, did you see the tall rotating units? I can't remember the brand but that may be a way to go if not a lot of wall space. The unit is four sided and spins.

The basement wall space is limited. I have a small home theatre where the kids use mainly to play video games watch movies. The walls are lined with books shelves, DVD/CD racks, furniture and a corner home office. The wife's only requirement is that the rack is oak in shade so it can match the other furniture. The other DVD/CD racks were purchased unfinished so I can stain it to any shade.

I hope no one else bought that Alantic rack that holds 504 DVD's it's a piece of crap. I knew the design was flawed when I saw the only thing holding the top and bottom tier was those fit & turn things. I followed the instructions to the word, something told me to glue but I was afraid of maybe getting a wrong piece in the wrong spot, I got this thing all together, lifted it to stand and it breaks right in the middle. Those twist & turn things snapped and the pegs wasn't going to hold anything. Now I am out the time and effort putting it together and $140.00, so my only hope is Racks & Stands might be able to do something for me. I don't want the same rack. If they were going to make the ting that tall at least the ouside pieces should have been one solid piece. I'm crushed.

Sorry to hear about the rack, Mr. Peabody. The Atlantic unit seems like a perfect one for me except for the size of the space in the basement. I eventually settle on a smaller unit from a local cabinet store - it holds about 265 DVDs. It comes unfinished so I put two coats of Minwax Polyshade Classical Oak. This solve my problem. I hope you can get an exchange from Racks and Stands. They have some very nice products.

I started with metal wall-hanging racks from Ikea and while they look decent in the store, practicality for this cheap-made-in-the-far-East stuff is a whole other ball of wax. Fact is, I've had to reinforce or reconstruct just about every piece of furniture I've ever bought from Ikea and some pieces still fell apart (my last TV stand). Rule of thumb at Ikea: stay as far away as possible from anything made of particle board. Their better stuff is pricier, but can be had for less on sale and from the scratch & dent section (although it will then require some repairs).

We don't always think of it, but CDs and DVDs are unwieldy and get heavy. DVDs expecially, don't stay on a flat shelf in earthquake country (or if you have a pair of large subs in the same room), so I either need a slight slant to the shelf or a small ridge at the edge. While I can't afford it, I have a friend who had a fantastic unit custom-built and finished - in short, it's gorgeous, exactly fits the space he needed (including rounded alcove tops), and it probably will add to the value of his home. I suppose if you have the tools and time, you could build these things yourself, too.

For me, I purchased a dozen metal DVD storage units from Ikea because they were super cheap (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70115521 ($4 ea. on sale), but they've been a real PITA - avoid at all costs. The cases flop out, don't fit well, and the manufacturing is so cheap that they don't match well. I'm sticking with them for now, but as soon as I have the time to deal with it, they're out.

If I had to do it again, I'd purchase smaller, narrow, wall hanging units made of solid wood. Regarding the Atlantic unit, Mr. P., that's probably because it doesn't do a good job of dealing with the weight. One thing I would consider is either buying several narrower units, or to replace the particle-board backing with a more solid piece of real plywood to offer additional support (I've done that on several pieces of Ikea furniture with decent results).

Regarding Ikea, I built a very solid book case (not for DVDs, but read below) from two sides of one their Benno towers that were a little beat up in the scratch & dent section and cost just a few dollars:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80073163

I then added six 1" thick real wood shelves (also from scratch & dent - I scored that day, LOL) and a two thinner pieces for lateral support on the back and under the bottom shelf. This book case is now rock solid and even holds an encyclopedia. I suppose I could cover the whole back with plywood to seal it, but the wall is fine for now.

Since the sides are originally from a CD/DVD tower, I could add a couple of extra shelves and this could easily be repurposed as an media rack holding 500+ DVDs - and I'm pretty sure it would be a whole lot stronger than the Atlantic units. Just avoid the particle-board Benno towers - the construction is OK, but I've had several screws crack them.

For the price, I made my own racks, for stereo and surround speaker stands, I plan on making a rack for the cd's and dvd's soon. (If I took the time to figure out how to post pics, I would show off.) It cost a third as much as whats on the market and looks as good if not better.

One of my friends neighbor build many of his furnitures. He has all the tools. He built desk, bookshelves, file cabinets, audio/video racks and stands, dvd/cd racks, shelves, and many other things. He built these using the best wood he can buy. These units are solid and looked like decorator pieces. The only problem was that it takes him a long time to build anything. He does it part time as a hobby. I was thinking of paying him to build some racks for me but I know I won't see the racks for least six month.

Here are two picks of my audio rack that I built for under $100, using birch ply and solid wood.

It was very easy to build and I like the way it looks personally over alot thats on the market sold as Audio racks.

...here's a simple, cost effective solution. It consists of 4 pieces of 1x6 in a rectangular shape, and hardwood dowels spanning the distance between the sides. You can make it as tall and as wide as you need. Keep in mind, the wider you make it, the thicker the dowels need to be. I used 1/2" and now wish that I had gone for 5/8ths. The spacing of the three dowels (higher in front, lower in back) gives me the option of standing the jewel cases straight up or leaning them back. I have the cd cases on top standing straight, and the dvd cases on the bottom leaning back (easier to read them from above). The whole thing can be attached to the wall with L brackets.

Hope this helps!

P.S. I tried to download pictures but was informed that they exceeded the maximum file size limit. Both the wife and myself sat here for about an hour fiddling with it, but to no avail.

No, not at all. One day to cut and glue together, and then a few more days to put a finish on it. About 15hours of work spread out through 4 days.
