I have an opportunity to pick a pair of these speakers. I don't know much about them, but they look like a model from the late 80's. Anyone have any opinions about these? Are they quality? Anyone have the specs on these?

Those are a bit blurry. I'd hold out for some in-focus speakers - they'll sound much better :)

How much?

It's kind of on me to make an offer, but I know next to nothing about advent or if these have any value. Let's say $40. Higher or lower?

Anyone else familiar? What's a fair price, assuming they are in good working condition?

I bought a pair for $20 and have seen others sell between that point and $50. SQ wise they are okay but IMO rely too heavily on the earlier Advent reputation rather than stand on their own qualities. For the same amount of money you ($20) could pick up a pair of Realistic Minimus 7's which are a bit smaller (I am assumimg if you are looking at Mini-Advents you are going to use them for a small office system or as surrounds) but I think have better SQ. Also looking at the photo it does look like you might have a surround issue on the woofer but it might just be a odd reflection.

They look like Mini Advent. I have a pair of the outdoor version and the sound is good. Just had to replace woofers due to rot. Think I paid around 50.00 with mounting hardware.

I just registered to answer this question.

I have a pair of Mini Advent II's that I have had since 1990. The surrounds are trashed (which led me to doing a Google search on Advent Mini II, which led me to this thread) and I am looking for replacement parts, but . . .

Since the question was asked, and I know the answer, the Mini II is a really good sounding speaker for its size. It has a somewhat anemic bottom-end, but what do you want from a bookshelf speaker? :) The highs are sharp and crisp.

My main complaint about them is that they do tend to "ring" a bit somewhere in the lower registers (it's been too long since I've had them running for me to be able to pinpoint it, though) but this, and the anemic low, are something that can be easily corrected with a properly configured subwoofer and crossover. As it happens, there is also a passive subwoofer that Advent made that was specifically intended to be used with the Mini II.

Their performance is best at 110Hz and up, which makes them excellent for home theater, but do be aware that there is no magnetic shielding, so don't get them too close to a CRT or plasma display. LCD and front-projected displays should not be a problem.

I think that Advent's engineers at the time were not so good at bass reflex speakers. All of the other speakers in Advent's line at the same time were acoustic suspension designs, and so, I believe, was the original Mini. I think that on the Mini II, they were trying to address the bass response of the original Mini, and, as I say, the Mini II has a problem with ringing.

One last thing is that they have an odd impedance of 6 ohms.

On the whole, great speakers. Not the best I've owned, but certainly not bad for something that I bought brand new on a college student's resources. They have played much loud music, and survived to reproduce fine details. The surrounds gave out just a couple of years ago, and they have been sitting in my garage since then waiting for a refit.

. . . back on to the search :)

look at www.simplyspeakers.com surround repair kits for every Advent model ever made...

Henry Kloss (founder of Advent), was one of the first (if not the first) to succesfully engineer and produce an acoustic suspension design. It's almost a 'trademark', an advent with a bass reflex design is not worth the name 'advent', and I should definately stay away from them.

Keep them spinning,
Bert.
