Wake me up when it's over.
I saw KJP about five years ago after Shine Eyed Mister Zen came out and was extremely impressed by his playing, if not his singing. He is an incredible guitar player. But then I picked up his next two albums Sky Like A Broker Clock and Slingshot Professionals, and then gave up. While he is a great player, unfortunately, I think he's a lousy song writer. Just plain boring.
So when I read he was putting out an instrumental acoustic guitar album, I thought it would be a good thing. Wrong. Very boring. It sounds like he went into the studio and just doodled on the guitar. You can barely find a melody anywhere. Compare that to Pat Metheny's One Quiet Night, where he went into the studio with his acoustic guitar and produced a stunning set of interesting tunes.
His only hope now is to dig deep into the backlog of blues songs and do a covers album. Otherwise, he's washed up.
