Based on reviews, advice, and good deal on ebay, I got a Onkyo TX-SR606.
Now I am ready to buy 2 floorstanding speakers. Down the road I'll add on to make it a 5.1 system, but due to a current lack of funds it will have to wait.
I have looked at Energy C-300's and C-500's.
Also the Klipsch Synergy F2 and F3's.
I want to find a pair of JBL ND310's somewhere, but am having trouble.
Then I saw JBL L880's. Those make me salivate. Anyone have any experience with them?
I would like to have a pair of floorstanding speakers with decent bass.
I will be using them for music just as much as movies.
Price up to $350 per speaker.
Anyway, thoughts???

Out of the options you listed I like the Energy C-500's the best.

The L880 auctions have been going on eBay for under $200 each. That's a heck of a deal and they should be an upgrade from the ND310.

Also, what about JBL L7's?
And where did you see L880's for under 200 each? If so, I'll buy them now.

Go for the Energy 500's.

The Energy 500's are the best for sure, but they were discontinued a while ago and finding the matching centre channel will be quite difficult for you.

The Energy CC-100 and CC-50 centers can still be found.

Better buy it while its available.

Is there any reason in particular you're considering floorstanders?
I followed the advice of forum lurking a few years ago and went with bookshelf speakers coupled with a nice sub, and im happy i did.
As you may hear or read here; floorstanders provide additional bass by cabinet vibration, the low end resonance is described by some people on this very forum as subtractng from transparency, and by my own experience i agree. This may not be a concern or issue to you but it may be something you consider when going to audition a pair of speakers.
Bookshelf speakers are also cheaper than their floorstanding counterparts. This can lighten the spending load a little bit so you can put something toward the 5.1 savings. Starting with a 2.1 isn't a bad option either (this is how i started out), but entirely up to you and your preferences.
The Energy C-200's wouldn't be a bad idea to listen to, same with the Klipsch Synergy B-3's.
What ever you decide, make sure you audition a few different makes, you'll be happy you did.

The benefit of floor standers are that in many cases you do not need a sub and you don't have the added cost of $100-150's for a good pair of speaker stands. But I agree, he should not rule out bookshelf speakers.

Where can I go to audition many types of speakers, be it energy, klipsch, or whatever? I am in the Dallas area.
Anyone know if Fry's has a good selection to hear?
Also, right now I am looking at just getting 2 Energy C-300 towers.
Eventually I'll get the rears and center. I mean, hell, I am a poor college student :-P
Would it be worth getting a matching sub with the two towers at first? Or is it unnecessary right now?
I suppose just to start out with I could get two c-300 towers, and just try it out. If it is noticeably lacking in bass I can get the sub, as they aren't very hard to find. I guess what I am asking, should I keep my mind set on getting a matching Energy sub rather than another brand?
EDIT***
Just saw this? Should I jump on it?

If your only into 2ch audio, skip the sub and go with the C-300's or use the money you would spend on the sub to upgrade to better speakers. If you want a 5.1 channel system, I would at least purchase the Energy Center channel- CC-50 or CC-100 while they are still available to match the C-300's. For rear channel speaks go with the Energy C-50's. You don't need 4 C-300's.

I don't care what the reviews say and neither should you. The five questions below are all that really matters.
Do you like them?
Do you want them.?
Can you drive them properly?
Can you afford them?
Will they fit your room?
Anything else is just not important!

Watch what you say. :hand:
There are lots of people here who have $5,000 or more, some of us much more invested in speakers. They and I may not consider the JBL's you like so much to be "worthy". No "Dis" intended.
BTW: All those specs don't mean diddly if the speaker doesn't sound good to you.
IMHO: Those don't.

The reviews for the JBL S312 really aren't that good. Considering that most people tend to like or at least claim to like their own equipment, I'd say many of those 105 reviews are refreshingly candid about the shortcomings of the S312 speakers.
As for listening to speakers in the Dallas area...The best speakers at Fry's are Polk. You might like them. Many audiophiles don't, though. Fry's also has Infinity and JBL. Speakers at a higher level can be a little hard to find in the Dallas area, in my own experience. You could try the Magnolia home theater store at Best Buy and maybe the MODIA home theater store. I don't know if MODIA will have anything in budget.
Speaking of craigslist in the Dallas area, here's a classic...

If you are a Hard Rock/Brittney Spears/Rap type listener, by all means go for the JBL's, etc.
If you have an interest in High Fidelity with your $700 budget, I would suggest:

Utilize the HP settings on the Onkyo for the mains (80hz recommended).
This system will handle (2ch) music very well and be future expand/upgradable to HT.
Best of luck.
cheers,
AJ
p.s. if you are afraid of handling a screwdriver, there are other options at sub
