Greetings. It's been a long while (8 or 9 years) since I last purchased an AV receiver, so I'm rediscovering the market. My current Onkyo 575X has taken very good care of me thus far, but I need some HDMI I/O goodness now.

I am generally happy with the Onkyo brand, but not necessarily married to it. I can get the TX-SR706 for about $550 online these days. Question: Is there a better option for me at or around that price point (Denon? Pioneer Elite? Whatever?)

This is for my main system, so it needs to handle 2-chan and 5.1 music duty as well as BluRay/DVD movie audio. I doubt if I will be adding a sixth and seventh speaker to the rig at this point, but one never knows.

Thanks.

Onkyo is a very good brand and gives plenty of bang for the buck. Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer and few other do as well. I'm thinking that the best deal is going to be which one you find on sale right now. Something you may what to consider is that last year's models may do everything you need, including HDMI at half the price. I'd keep an eye open for those. Also, I saw on another thread that the new models come out in a couple of months. That will make the current models, "last year's models."
Once you find the model you like, check on line for deals.
Happy shopping.

At that price point, I'd be looking at Onkyo or Yamaha.

The only issue with last years models is I think there were some issues with the Onkyo 705 (audio sync & hum if I recall correctly). It was my impression that the 706 corrected these issues. It is also my understanding that the 805 was also afflicted by the same problems but not the 605.

Maybe someone else can confirm this.

LJ auditioned a few models last year I think. He mentioned some of the same issues and eventually ended up with a Yamaha. Not sure which models he tried.

I actually just bought the 706 a couple weeks ago and really love it so far. It seemed to be a very noticeable upgrade in sound quality over my old TX-SR700.

The TX-SR706 is $499 for a refurb at Accessories4less.com. I've been thinking about one, too.

Thanks, G. Very good point, there. I'll keep my ear to the ground.

And thanks to everyone else as well. I appreciate your help.

Another one to keep in mind...AC4L.com has refurbished Marantz SR5003's for $539 shipped(if you choose the standard free shipping deal).

Totally agree with this. With the economy tanking and new models rolling off of the conveyor, you'll probably get even better deals on the 6 series Onkyo AVR's. It's amazing what you can get for ~ $550 these days.
