Mr. Peabody....I moved back to St. Louis from North Carolina and walked into a pawnshop called PJ's on Page and Hanley. I looked around the place and notice a Rotel amp RB-1080, Rotel Control amp RC-1090, cd changer Rotel RCC-1055 and a tuner Rotel RT-961. I was out the door with the entire package for $300. What a welcome back gift. I feel like I stole something. The amp alone cost $999.00 new. Is it always this easy in the big STL?

Wow, what a deal. I think you just got lucky. The only stuff I've ever seen is the Best Buy type brands. What area did you land in? Wander over to Music For Pleasure yet?

We are living in corporate housing in Creve Coure across the street from Plaza Motors. I've been looking high and low for housing all over STL. My wife finally found a house she loves over in the St.Charles/St.Peters area. We close on Feb 17.

No I've not been yet but I will soon. As soon as I get settled. I've got the Rotel all hooked up. It aint bad but the highs sound slightly rolled off and the bottom end sounds a littel unnatural but I can live with . Just have to pair it with the right speakers. I see a lot of guys use B&W's with Rotel but I have never been a fan of B&W or Rotel. Just could not pass on that deal.

I dont know but I see they have a bunch of Casino's around this city. Maybe I'll stop in one of them and see if I can get luck again.

I agree, I have a lot of respect for Rotel and they are a decent product but it's not my type of sound. With that being said I would certainly have picked up that deal as well. Their sound is pleasant just a bit subdued to my liking.

frenchmon,

Try Dynaudio with Rotel. To these ears they sound much more compelling than the traditional Rotel/B&W combo (IMO). They have a good selection at "Music For Pleasure'. They also had a spiffy, little tube-amp iPod dock from Sonic Frontiers that I've been thinking about for the office.

BTW, congrats on the house.

Who had the SF Ipod dock? If it's MFP they must be holding out, they haven't mentioned it to me but they did pick up the big Statement HT processor so I guess that makes sense they'd have a few other goodies from them. They historically aren't big tube guys. They did at one time have a tube preamp and CD player from T+A in there. These were both mega bucks but did they sound good. I think if it wasn't for the price range T+A would come on strong in the U.S. I haven't heard anything yet that didn't sound excellent.

I think I found out why the Rotel amp RB 1080 sounded bright with a bloated bottom end. I swithched out the Rotel RCC 1055 CD player and hooked up my Marantz CD/SACD player and the sound was like night and day. the Marantz was much smoother and warmer compaired to the in your face sound of the 1055. The bottom end of the 1055 made the Paradigms towers sound like I had a sub hooked up to a two channel system.

Sounds like a very good setup.... I used to own a Rotel RC1070/RB1080 combo, which I used with a Marantz CD5001.... so I'm not surprised that the Marantz had that effect on your system...

You have a great setup... now sit back and enjoy it!!!

That's interesting that the Marantz is warmer than the Rotel. Maybe Rotel's gear vary more than some. The Rotel gear I heard seemed very laid back in presentation. I heard some of the Rotel monoblocks which I believe were over 200 watts that were supposed to be good but I thought they sounded thin in the mids and highs trying to drive a pair of Martin Logans.

If you want to see Rotel on display Best Sound is the place on north Lindbergh close to Olive. They are also the ARC and Classe dealer. These lines must have loyal fans because I'm surprised the store is still in business.
