I am a turntable newbie, but would like to add one to my system. Any suggestions for a budget turntable? Also, what is the function of a phono stage, and do I need/should I get one for my Cambridge 640A? Thanks for all ideas

Unless your 640A has the optional phono stage, you'll need the phono preamp to get the turntable's signal up to the level your integrated amp can use.

Cambridge Audio also make a couple of phono preamps, the 540p and 640p. I have a 640p connecting a Rega Planar turntable to a Musical Fidelity amplifier. Seems quite good, but I'm not sure how well it compares to other brands.

I also own the Cambridge Audio 640P and it is good for the money. The 640P was very quiet with my low output moving coil. I also owned the 640A and you will need a phono preamp.
