come out tomorrow morning. Will The Dark Knight get some love? I'm betting not, but we'll see. Slumdog Millionaire will be a shoo-in but it'll be interesting to see what gets nominated after that. I'm betting Frost/Nixon, Milk, and Benjamin Button, and I'm hoping WALL E will sneak in. I wouldn't be surprised to see Gran Torino or The Reader on the list or maybe even something out of left field like Happy-Go-Lucky. I wonder too if the Academy will really honor a white actor in blackface (Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder)... the buzz says yes; I guess we'll find out shortly.

Wow! There are alot of nom's for "Benjamin Button!" I haven't even made it out to see that yet. I did see "The Reader" and thought Kate Winslet was excellent in that. I wouldn't be surprised to see her win in that category. I haven't found "Revolutionary Road" playing in a location near me, but want to see it. Also I am looking forward to seeing "Rachel Getting Married" as I hear Hathaway is excellent in it! "Doubt" I haven't seen yet, and am thinking I'll just wait for it on rental. I did really like "Gran Torino" & didn't think it would be up for any awards.

What, no Michael Moore?

LOL.

From reading the lists, particularly for the major categories, you'd think only a dozen or so movies came out last year. What does that say about the movie industry?

Performance by an actor in a leading role

* Mickey Rourke in “The Wrestler” (Mickey will win, though I actually believe that Sean Penn did a better job of acting on account of the fact that Rourke was really just playing himself!)

Performance by an actor in a supporting role

* Heath Ledger in “The Dark Knight” (He'll win despite the fact that his death is the only thing that made the performance notable in any shape, manner, or fashion)

Performance by an actress in a leading role

* Kate Winslet in “The Reader” (and it will be well-deserved)

Performance by an actress in a supporting role

* Marisa Tomei in “The Wrestler” (she's brilliant and outshines her competition by a long shot. Does that mean she'll win? I dunno but I hope so)

Best animated feature film of the year

* “WALL-E” (not only the best animated, WALL-E should have ousted one of either "The Curious Case of Benjamin Boredom" or "Frost/Nixon" as it was a better, deeper, more meaningful film than either of them!)

Achievement in cinematography

* “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”
* “The Dark Knight”

I have no idea which of these two will win. But one of these two will win. I'll say 'The Dark Knight' probably because they'll want to toss it an award without tossing it an important award.

Achievement in costume design

* “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (without contest I would imagine)

Achievement in directing

* “Slumdog Millionaire” (there's actually a lot of good competition for this one. Tough call)

Best motion picture of the year

* “Milk”

* “Slumdog Millionaire”

Milk should win. Slumdog probably will. It's politically correct to nominate the gay film; it's eeeeeeeevil to let it win in the minds of the Academy :(

Adapted screenplay

* “The Reader” (I actually think this was a tough one to adapt. The academy needs again to recognize the film with a forgettable award and I think this one's it. No other awards are likely to gravitate to the touching story of a Nazi paedophile!)

Original screenplay

* “Milk” (and this one will be the bone that they throw to the brilliant and gripping Milk)

O ho, so there were some surprises after all. I have to say that I'm fairly surprised that Gran Torino was completely shut out... I love Richard Jenkins as much as the next guy, but I really thought that the Academy would at least show Eastwood some acting love, especially since it was purported to be his last role. I also remain stunned that Robert Downey Jr was actually nominated. What's with only three Best Song nominees? Did someone not want the Boss to appear on the show?

It will be interesting to see what comes up roses on Oscar night. I don't think as many of these categories are a lock as people are saying... Viola Davis as Supporting Actress is probably the surest thing.

Time to catch up on the few titles here that I haven't seen... not that many this year-- Changeling is the only one out of the major awards. I'm hoping I can track down Trouble the Water, Departures, The Baader-Meinhof Komplex, The Betrayal, and The Garden as well.

As a big Ralph Fiennes fan I am a little impressed that he may be the lucky charm of actors for last year.

He was in In Bruges (he stole it for me), The Duchess, The Reader, and the very good TV movie that was nominated at the golden globes (Bernard and Doris).

They should have an award for best actor in a lot of good stuff but missed the mark on actually being nominated for anything.
